Pinakin Patel edit

Pinakin Patel graduated in Chemistry in 1975, only to discover that his heart was in the creative disciplines. By 1979, he had steered his life’s course into a totally different direction. He launched ‘Etcetera’ - India’s first lifestyle store where he began to source an entire symphony of contemporary art, handloom furnishings, and reinterpreted crafts.

The store’s eclectic display brought offers for interior designing. Interiors led to architecture, and free spirited Pinakin took up ‘side stints’ in journalism, photography, exhibition design, production design, and art curation.

A bench designed by him, auctioned for the highest amount at the Swiss Consulate’s fund raiser conducted by Christie’s. The National Gallery of Modern Art invited him to create a show on ‘Street Art’. Pinakin started working voluntarily with the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sanghralaya on formulating and designing the Museum Gallery and the Karl Khandalawala Section. His dear friends Kekoo and Khorshed Gandhi spurred him to associate with the newly founded Paramparik Karigar. The J J School Fund Raiser with Dadiba and Khorshed Pundole and the renovation of the J J School of Arts Gallery followed. Pinakin designed two ‘outside’ exhibitions, ‘The Portrait of a Community’ and the Paramparik Karigar Craft Exhibition both at the National Gallery of Modern Art which had until then refused to show anything outside of Modern Art!

At the height of his popularity, in 2000, Pinakin shifted his studio from the hustle bustle of Mumbai to the quiet of Alibag. Here, amidst “forever reinventing nature”, he studied Hindustani Music and Indian Philosophy. His architectural work was largely inspired by Geoffrey Bawa, interiors by minimalist John Pawson, furniture by Christian Liagre and product design by Philippe Starck. These inspirations fuelled by the study of Indian Aesthetics compelled him to think that he had reached his own limits. Just then the Guru appeared. From nowhere, India’s Renaissance Man Dashrath Patel shifted his home and studio to Pinakin’s little haven in Alibag. 24×7 ×365 Dashrath’s illuminating anecdotes took Pinakin further to becoming the first crusader of ‘India Modern’. In the decade to follow this was to result in the creation of the Dashrath Patel Museum in Alibag.

In early 2005, Pinakin Patel was re-launched in Mumbai by gen next. This time around as a brand called PINAKIN. He was invited to speak on many an educational and trade platform, like the World Interior Design Conference in NCPA Mumbai, along with stalwarts such as Tadao Ando.

In 2014 Pinakin retired. At the age of 60, he took up the study and experience of Fashion Design only to flirt with yet another discipline. Around the same time he experienced a magical experience with Mr. Radhe Shyam Agarwal of the Emami Group in Kolkata. Agarwal ji gave Pinakin a 65000 sq ft building to design and then express himself freely in its programming. The Kolkata Centre of Creativity, opened in September 2018 and is already a destination for the global creative community.

Pinakin lives in Alibag since the last twenty years on a negative carbon footprint. His motto is “Food for Thought. Thought for Creativity. Creativity for Life”. Through his activities in Kolkata and Alibag, he hopes to distract the creative community from adding surplus products to faceless audiences and channelise their creativity towards improving life in all its forms, here and now, without going to Mars.
