Thanks for uploading Image:Loading luggage, Kingsford Smith Airport 1950s.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

Hello. In response to your post at the copyright questions page[1], I think the best way to start on an ambitious project of this sort is through official means. You can email the Wikimedia Foundation at info-en-o@wikimedia.org (make sure to include a good summary of your aims in the topic and first sentence). Regarding your specific questions:
- Content that is copyrighted (and is not under a free license) may only be used on Wikipedia if it conforms to our Non-free content guideline). The guideline sets forth a number of criteria with which the image and its usage have to comply. Some of the requirements include: the image is not replaceable with a free alternative, there is clear attribution on the image page, and that a fair use rationale be provided on the image page explaining how the image meets the criteria. Images that do not conform to the guideline are eventually deleted.
- There are a number of copyright tags for images that are in the public domain, including ones for those that are "out of copyright". You can access the full list of tags at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags.

NLA links edit
Hi NLA PIC. The way you have added so many links to the NLA seems to be simply promoting the NLA website, which is usually considered spam, and so the linnks have been removed. I am sure that there are some articles which would benefit from the addition of links according to the external links policy, and so it would be ok to add links (again) in those cases. However, even when a link is validly added, please do not include your signature. Signatures should not appear in article, and are used only for talk pages and other discussions. - Hi NLA PIC. I agree with JPD that your contributions should not be signed, and that you should read the external links policy. In some cases I've re-added the links (without your signature), but only where I think it's appropriate (e.g. I didn't re-add the links in the Boxing article - dozens of libraries would have similar content). Think about whether the link makes an important contribution to the article. When placing them, it's best if you place the links below those already present, or at least in order of relevance, and perhaps in the simplified format that I've used. Hi, I noticed you have said the owner of the work is the NLA in the image description, but the important thing is who owns the copyright - which would be the photographer, in this case James Nomarhas. The NLA mentions their pictures can be copyrighted here. So unless he released the picture under a free licence it cant be used here unless it is under fair use. --Astrokey44 09:43, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
- In answer to your comments about who owns the copyright to the photograph which I uploaded to the Royal Canberra Hospital Implosion.........James Nomarhas worked as photographer for the NLA and took these images as part of an assignment. The library owns the works and copyright and Nomarhas is happy for the images to be used anyway.I am working as a volunteer within the Pictures Collection and have access to staff and records connected to copyright issues.NLA PIC 23:48, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
Having access to staff and records, does not assign copyright permission.
Permission to use under copyright, assigns permission to use.
Volunteer or even salaried status at the NLA, does not conjure up authority to give permission to use images.
Sometimes volunteers imagine they have more authority than they are ever likely to be granted.

My name is Linda Groom and I am the Curator of Pictures at the National Library of Australia. Tina Jenner, a Library volunteer, has passed on your message to me. I fully support the efforts of Wikipedia editors to ensure that copyright has been cleared on any images loaded to Wikipedia.
I have the authority to authorise reproduction of images held in the Library's Pictures Collection, in three situations: (1) where those images are out of copyright or (2) the copyright is owned by the National Library or (3) the copyright owner has given the Library permission in writing to authorise re-use.
Tina Jenner has access to all our records which document cases in which creators have licenced the Library to permit re-use of works in the Library's Pictures Collection. In addition, she checks with me or my deputy Sylvia Carr, before submitting any image to Wikipedia, that there are no copyright constraints on that image.
In the case of the images of the Canberra Hospital implosion, I am happy to confirm that James Nomarhas took those images while employed as a salaried photographer by the National Library. Under Australian copyright law, copyright in images taken by salaried employees rests with the employer.
