Addressing the potential COI can be handled with a statement on your User page. I'm guessing many new editors come to Wikipedia with no intent of promoting or deifying a subject they have personal knowledge of; I made quite a few edits in that mode, and you can see my "declaration", which never has had any pushback in nearly nine years of editing. I also place a notice on the talk pages of any subject I have met or even admire, just to give other editors a heads-up to screen for neutral point of view. Again, welcome! — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 21:16, 24 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

I need advice on what is the current Wikipedia policy and correct procedure to update the content of a "Living Person Biography" to show a recent Death notice. This is for Prof Roy Schwitters, an Emeritus Professor in our Physics Dept here at the University of Texas at Austin, and here is his current Wikipedia page address: Roy Schwitters I have worked with Professor Schwitters for many years here at UT Austin Physics Dept before he retired 2 years ago, and his Biography information here is very seriously lacking in accurate information and needs a serious update as soon as possible, on top of announcing his recent death on Jan 10. I have an official Death Notice web page location from our College of Natural Science web site, and also an Obituary Death notification web site. But I do not know what is the current policy and Editing, and Update rules right now to update the information on an important person biography Wikipedia page. I have done this before to correct false and incorrect information that was posted right after the death of one of our other Physics Faculty, Professor George Sudarshan, at this Wikipedia page address back in 2018: E. C. George Sudarshan and I was familiar with the policy and procedures back then for what is the correct procedures to update a "Living person" biography to show the correct death notice information ... But I don't know if those procedures are still the correct things to do under current Wikipedia policy on updating to show a person has died. So I would like to get any advice from a Senior Editor on what is the current correct procedures right now to update Prof. Schwitters Wikipedia page. Also, I think Prof. Schwitters Wikipedia page should get Locked until it is possible to Properly Update all his Biography information... and in particular Keep Out any people from updating his Biography information on his Career as Director of the SSC Super-Collider Lab ... who basically have No Idea what they are talking about. There is a Huge Amount of Incorrrect Information about the Super Collider Lab and Prof Schwitters role as Director of this Lab that is circulating out on the Web ... and Since I had worked at the Super Collider Lab and also worked with Prof Schwitters for many years here in the Physics Dept at UT Austin ... I want to make sure that NO False and Incorrect Information gets posted under his Wikipedia Biography that could get his family upset. So I think this qualifies as a situation to Lock this page and have the updates supervised by some responsible Senior Editor ... and I will be Very Happy to do most of the Editing and updating work on this... and long as I can get good advice on what is the current recommended Template procedures to update a Biography Wikipedia page like this. So I would appreciate very much any advice and Help from some experienced Senior Editor on what is the best procedure to update this web page. Mselover (talk) 00:24, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

We don't have "senior editors" here, and admins don't have any more authority than any other editor, just extra tools- but I will try to answer you. Articles are not protected preemptively- there must be a demonstratable problem such as actual vandalism or the repeated posting of incorrect information that protecting the article will prevent. Articles are not protected merely to prevent editing while someone writes an update- that's not technically possible, and even if it were, a fundamental principle here is that almost anyone can edit almost any article.
As someone who was a colleague, you should be aware of conflict of interest. You are welcome to propose edits to the article on the article talk page(Talk:Roy Schwitters) and mark them as a formal edit request(click for instructions) to draw the attention of other editors who can review your request.
Just FYI I've formatted your links to Wikipedia articles as proper internal links- we don't need the whole url, simply place the target page title in double brackets(like this [[Joe Biden]]). 331dot (talk) 09:54, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks very much for all your information here... and
Yes, I have already read and are fully aware of the "conflict of interest" policy.
So, I have already posted a lot of information to the
"Talk:Roy Schwitters" article talk page to explain what were the
quick changes I already made to this article page... and
why I thought it was "time critical" to make these changes...
Which was in summary...
The information already Public in the Official UT Austin Death Notice Obituary, and
the information already Public in the local Austin American Statesman newspaper obituary,
both of these Public Notices were already giving a Lot More accurate information
about Roy's career ... then anything that was in Roy's article page here on Wikipedia.
So I thought it was time critical to get this page updated
soon as possible with at least a minimum amount of key information...
and what I added in ... I said in my comments on the Talk page...
That these are just "initial Placeholder" paragraphs that
other Editors can come in and make additional update changes
to further develop things on Roy's career information.
So Basically ...
I was trying to be as "Neutral" and Un-biased as I could
to just get things started on these key topics in Roy's career.
But also... I made the following additional comments...
That there are many other important accomplishments in
Roy's career after the Super Collider SSC Lab was canceled...
and that I can provide additional information for any
other Editors that want to do more Updates to this article.
So my apologies if I was not doing a Strict following of the
"Conflict of Interest" Policy ...
But I was trying to be as "Neutral" as possible
to try and get some of this Key information updates
on Roy's Wikipedia page here...
As soon as possible.
So anyway ...
I would be Totally Happy to follow All your Suggestions
and Recommendations on how to move forward now
with any more new updates for this page...
and I would be Very Happy to Help any other Editors
who want to work on updates to Roy's article/page here. Mselover (talk) 12:25, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
