Query about addition to Opuntia ficus-indica

edit

Thank you for the warm welcome Peter, I have revised my excerpt some and would like your reviews.. "The fruit of the Opuntia ficus-indica also known as the Nopal cactus has also been shown to have powerful health benefits. This was discovered many centuries ago by the natives of the Sonoran deserts. The Prickly pear fruits from the Opuntia ficus-indica cactus, or tunas have significant antioxidant benefits which have been shown to help the body reduce inflammation [16] and help correct other human maladies. Nopal cactus antioxidant betalains

A powerful wellness product Nopalea is derived from the fruit of the Opuntia ficus-indica or Nopal cactus.

Nopalea is derived from the ripe fruit of the Opuntia ficus-indica plant. Opuntia ficus-indica fruit and leaves have been used to control rapid changes in blood glucose levels in both animals and humans.[12][13] However, the product Nopalea is a fruit juice. Its metabolism must be calculated as any fruit juice: the current harvest has 14 calories and about 3 ? grams of carbohydrate per ounce. It should be treated as any other food in diabetic calculations.

On the positive side, type 2 diabetes is an inflammatory condition. Opuntia ficus-indica fruit helps the body to reduce inflammation.[14] So, Nopalea may provide benefits beyond blood sugar stability;[15] it may actually reduce some of the inflammation that causes long-term health concerns for people with type 2 diabetes.

Let me know, I have added more resources to support my findings.. Thanks Mrken777 (talk) 18:03, 16 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Which excerpt? Where did you plan on posting that? Banaticus (talk) 01:54, 17 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
@Banaticus: there seems to have been some cross-posting here! I originally replied to Mrken777's query to me at User talk:Peter coxhead#Query (added heading). I'll now respond here. I've added a subheading here to make reference easier. Peter coxhead (talk) 09:41, 17 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
@Mrken777: to keep everything together, I'll respond here from now on, not on my talk page.
  1. To add this material to the Opuntia ficus-indica page, we need to be absolutely sure that the plant referred to is actually Opuntia ficus-indica. For example, [15] doesn't specifically refer to this species as far as I can see, so wouldn't be relevant.
  2. The information about the supposed health benefits of the product Nopalea will be very difficult to add to Wikipedia unless you can provide a review in a scientific journal by a non-involved source. The website of a company which promotes the product doesn't meet the requirements of WP:MEDRS.
  3. At present, the material you've written isn't encyclopedic; it reads like a promotion for the product Nopalea. It has to be written descriptively. An appropriate style for Wikipedia is to write like this: "Some scientific studies have suggested that products derived from Opuntia ficus-indica may have medical benefits. For example, --insert suggested benefit--.--insert ref--". Peter coxhead (talk) 09:56, 17 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
I would advise that the wording high above looks to me too much like an advert for a product, and that it would be removed from an article very quickly. The claimed benefits of the plant can only be added with sound referencing and without the product name being placed prominently. By sound referencing, I mean (as mentioned above) neutral scientific review, and not company sites, blogs, forums or places advocating 'natural health' stuff without real neutral scientific backing.
