RE: Why are you undoing my edit?

This is the first time I've edited a Wikipedia article, but I am pretty sure that I did the right thing. I'm the one who edited the deaf-mute article to mention The Stand in Deaf-mutes in art and literature. Did I do something wrong? If I recall correctly, King did not use the term "deaf-mute". I'm sure King conveyed that the character could not hear and did not speak, but I don't think he used the term "deaf-mute" to describe the character. The article only cites literature in which that term is actually used by the author. Otherwise it is inappropriate because then the example itself falls into the same pejorative, prejudicial terminology that it is meant to discuss. In other words, "deaf-mute" is an insulting term to deaf people. It should only be discussed in an historical sense (i.e., authors decades ago may have used the terms in their writings). But a character should not be referred to as "deaf-mute" unless the author specifically uses that term. That would be similar to using the N-word to describe a black character in the article Nigger, which would only be used if the author used it. Ward3001 (talk) 03:55, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for checking it out. It appears my memory is incorrect. But let suggest that you word it as "a man referred to as 'deaf-mute'", including the quotations around "deaf-mute". Specifically that IP has not edited at all for the past three days per this, the last warning they were given was some seven weeks ago and the instance of vandalism you noted was back in December last year. AIV is for current or very recent instances of vandalism, particularly in the case of IP users (users without registered accounts) - an IP address may well be shared between a large number of people and may be reallocated to different people over time; the person editing using a given IP address is very possibly not the same person who was using it back in December, so issuing a warning or a block for vandalism that occurred over two months ago will probably be inappropriate.

How do I display a picture on my user page that isn't in the Wikimedia Commons? (question from your userpage)

You can display pictures on your userpage by simply adding this code where you want it:

[[File:name of picture]]

A detailed tutorial of different options you have when adding pictures can be found at WP:Picture tutorial. I must warn you though, only free images may be used on your userpage. Most of the images that are on Wikipedia and not in the Commons are not free and are only used under "fair-use" rationales. These unfortunately are not eligible to be used on userpages.
