Managing a conflict of interest
editHello, Marybarnesbecn. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the article Beacon Roofing Supply, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. Editing for the purpose of advertising or promotion is not permitted. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).
Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. RA0808 talkcontribs 21:22, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
As previously advised, your edits give the impression you have a financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. You were asked to cease editing until you responded by either stating that you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits, or by complying with the mandatory requirements under the Wikimedia Terms of Use that you disclose your employer, client and affiliation. Again, you can post such a disclosure on your user page at User:Marybarnesbecn, and the template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Marybarnesbecn|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}
. Please respond before making any other edits to Wikipedia. — JJMC89 (T·C) 06:16, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

editPlease do not add promotional material to Wikipedia, as you did to Beacon Roofing Supply. While objective prose about beliefs, organisations, people, products or services is acceptable, Wikipedia is not intended to be a vehicle for soapboxing, advertising or promotion. Thank you. RA0808 talkcontribs 21:35, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to add soapboxing, promotional or advertising material to Wikipedia, as you did at Beacon Roofing Supply, you may be blocked from editing. RA0808 talkcontribs 21:38, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. You appear to be repeatedly reverting or undoing other editors' contributions at Beacon Roofing Supply. Although this may seem necessary to protect your preferred version of a page, on Wikipedia this is known as "edit warring" and is usually seen as obstructing the normal editing process, as it often creates animosity between editors. Instead of reverting, please discuss the situation with the editor(s) involved and try to reach a consensus on the talk page.
If editors continue to revert to their preferred version they are likely to be blocked from editing Wikipedia. This isn't done to punish an editor, but to prevent the disruption caused by edit warring. In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Edit warring on Wikipedia is not acceptable in any amount, and violating the three-revert rule is very likely to lead to a block.
Since other editors have raised concerns about the promotional tone of your edits and your apparent conflict of interest, you need to discuss those concerns at Talk:Beacon Roofing Supply and get a consensus about how (or if) the article should be changed. You may not unilaterally change the article. —C.Fred (talk) 21:45, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

Why aren't my updates being accepted by Wikipedia? The information currently on the page is severely dated. The information I have provided is accurate with citations from credible sources. Please advise. Marybarnesbecn (talk) 03:51, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Mary. Please read the messages above from other editors, especially the message from C.Fred suggesting you discuss your proposed changes at Talk:Beacon Roofing Supply and work towards consensus, a suggestion I support. Sam Sailor 15:54, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

How do I gain Wikipedia consensus? If you read the description of this page, it states there are 13 regional brands, and then goes on to list more than double that below--that alone is an egregious mistake. Beacon recently announced a major acquisition as well, and it seems you all are digging in your heels at a request to update the page with accurate information. This makes no sense to me, since I thought the whole purpose of this site was to maintain accuracy.

- Have you tried using the talk page of the article to propose your changes, including providing sources to back up your claims? —Jeremy v^_^v Bori! 08:06, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Marybarnesbecn:, I first suggest reading the conflict of interest policy before proceeding. As others have noted above, it seems apparent that you may be professionally or otherwise linked to this article subject and it is easy to run afoul of these policies if one is not careful. You might also want to read the Core Content Policies and the policy on reliable sources. You have to understand that Wikipedia is not a company, it is a loose association of volunteers worldwide and the only way anything gets done is by talking with other editors. As for the digging in of heels, editors with connections to article subjects are strongly advised not to do as you did and just make changes to the articles to which they are connected. These are the reasons why Jéské Couriano says the proper place to work out these issues is Talk:Beacon Roofing Supply. Your best option to correct this incorrect information is to start a new section on that page specifying 1)exactly what the incorrect information is, 2)what is the correct information, and 3)what sources you have that substantiate or verify the correct information. I hope this helps. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 13:10, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
