Hard Machine

Please don't nominate articles under A1 when they actually do have enough context to determine what they are about. It took me less than 60 seconds to Google for it and convert the page into a stub. In addition, it's poor form to nominate articles when they have existed less than 60 seconds themselves, if they have any potential of being converted into encyclopedic form. Use {{prod}} or AFD if you are unsure; Candidates for Speedy Deletion should only be for the most clearcut cases. Thanks. -- nae'blis 13:20, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I was pretty sure they had no context when I saw them. (I don't have the minute it takes to Google the relevant articles - I'm on RC patrol and fall behind quickly). As for tagging articles for speedy deletion, I user Vandal Fighter and the edits scroll off the screen after less than 30s and it really isn't possible. MER-C 13:39, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Don't panic - it's not necessary for you personally to cover everything that comes up on RC Patrol, I'm sure. If you take an extra sixty seconds, you'll save a) the original contributor (who we should assume good faith in) probably more than that amount of time in effort and hassle, and b) every other contributor who comes across that article to improve, delete, or expand it a little hassle in understanding what's going on. A1 is really specialized for when the article doesn't have any context to know what the person is talking about - a brand new, seconds-old article might have another edit in 2-5 minutes that would make everything clear, but this one at least gave the artist's name and genre right off the bat.
None of which is to say that I don't appreciate the work you do with RC Patrol (I'd never have the time for it, myself), but keep the big picture in mind. Thanks! -- nae'blis 20:31, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Binary edit

Sorry about the edit. I'm new to Wikipedia and I intended to write an additional section about how text can be encoded in binary. As an example, I wanted to upload an image of the current Wikipedia page in binary. I must have hit the wrong key by mistake and then my computer froze up on me. It was not my intent to vandalize at all. Apologies for any misunderstanding. If you think that addition might be a worthwhile idea, let me know. Meantime, I'm going to figure out the ropes around here. Thanks! --Wikipop 13:30, 25 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

A more appropriate place would be ASCII, however keep it to a couple of words or so. You might insert an example section that contains a table like this:
Characters W i k i p e d i a !
Hexadecimal 0x57 0x69 0x6B 0x69 0x70 0x65 0x64 0x69 0x61 0x21
Your computer probably spewed at the large amount of text added (220 kB). My browser lags when vandals add huge amounts of text to a page. Editing help is available here. (I've blanked your talk page - insertions of 100kB without edit summaries generally are vandalism). MER-C 13:42, 25 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

SPREAD Distribution

Hi there! I would appreciate your not nominating for deletion the "SPREAD Distribution" page. I am writing this small page because I have seen a small music theater in Chicago which has an impressive acoustic sound! (I'm a musician myself), and I was told the acoustics had been designed by this small company in Spain that specialises in this field. I then discovered that there is a whole concept behind the acoustics of rooms, theaters and halls, and this company has been very friendly letting me learn the basics, which I'm now including on Wikipedia for other people who are interested in the same as me. I am also an architect and I have seen software they have created to help us architects make better-sounding buildings and to make them sustainable ecologically. Anyway... If you'd like to ask me any other questions, or you can even try contacting them to see how they reply to you. They are very friendly. I simply think it's fair to mention a company that makes software for architects and who seem to be admired in Acoustic circles... Thank you!

It's Essjay's wiki on vandalism, which serves as a gateway for the numerous vandalism IRC channels around here. too quick

some of your reverts are too quick to be labeled as "vandalism" when it is clearly merely a browser "save page" malfunction. try waiting a minute or two, and let the person fix it themselves. easy enough to be kind enough to let them sort themselves out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.163.100.8 (talkcontribs)

If I don't revert it, someone will in a similar time frame. The goal of RC patrol is to perform those reverts as quickly as possible (and 99% of the time it is vandalism). MER-C 06:48, 27 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
whenever it's happened to me, 100% of the time it was being booted off AOL and/or a simple form submission error that caused the problems. same thing with being blocked -- it's never my articles but the shared IPs snags everyone else.  :( —Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.163.100.8 (talkcontribs)

While I wholeheartedly agree with your speedy nomination for this article, the article for this one's lover, Pierre Fitch, was deleted on the same grounds (CSD A7); now there is quite the debate occurring at its deletion review. It might be better to just let this one play out as an AfD; but the call is yours. Quite frankly, I'm tired of having to stop and clean up this crap instead of working on real articles.Chidom talk  07:28, 27 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bad news and good news regarding Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Veronica Castellana

First the bad news: I speedied Veronica Castellana as CSD A7, which was the correct thing to do; but I also speedied RN MARKET and LNC STAT, which was the wrong thing to do considering neither of them were biographies. For this I have to say I made a mistake.

Now the good news: As a result of my silly improper speedies, I've had more time to review the creator's contribs and have bundled all his other advertising creations in a even bigger, better, badder AfD. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Legal Nurse Investigator. Awyong Jeffrey Mordecai Salleh 10:01, 27 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Speedy tagging

MER-C, please consider whether it's appropriate to tag articles for speedy when they are already being considered for deletion at AfD. The article I have in mind is Matthew Edge, the AfD for which already has one genuine participant advocating keeping the article. --bainer (talk) 10:31, 27 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Speedy delete is a valid course of action in AFD. If you vote speedy delete under CSD and don't tag the article, then the deletion isn't very speedy at all. MER-C 10:46, 27 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
You're entitled to express your opinion on the AfD. But when someone has already expressed a legitimate argument for keeping the article (as opposed to, say, the author of a vanity article saying it should be kept) then you shouldn't tag it for speedy. Articles can't be speedily deleted once someone has made such an argument, and tagging will only get in the way of admins cleaning out CAT:CSD. --bainer (talk) 11:03, 27 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. But pages that meet CSD should get deleted regardless of whether or not they are on AFD. MER-C 12:36, 27 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your hard work doing RC patrol. I bumped Emma Cooper from speedy to AFD: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Emma Cooper. Quarl (talk) 2006-08-27 22:52Z

What has happened to Wikipedia?

First I give a compliment on a friends talk page and am accused of vandalism> Next I rebut on his talk page and am accused of vandalism again (by my friend nonetheless [the power has gone to his head]). Now I try and clean my slate and experiment with manually removing the warnings (unaware that it is against regulations), and I am threatened with a block? This is utterly ridiculous. Wikipedia has degraded into a hierarchy where those who have too much time on their hands hold higher status than those who just don't see the fun in pouring over recent changes for hours on end. I just wanted to let you know that it is truely shameful that this has happened to Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.48.55.207 (talkcontribs)

Is this you? [2] First of all, removing vandal warnings is a big no-no. Second of all, it looks like the guy who reverted you in the first place thought it was an inappropriate comment. The standard procedure is that we determine what you did wrong, look at your talk page and apply the next level warning up. In your case, a third level warning was applied today, therefore I apply the fourth level warning, which threatens a block. I think you should take this up with the original reverter, but in a more appropriate way. MER-C 05:49, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yua Aida

MER-C, please go back and read WP:CSD criteria A7. As long as an article asserts notability it cannot be speedy deleted under this criteria. If the subject of the article is non-notable thyen please use Prod or [{WP:AFD|AfD]] instead. A good example is the article Yua Aida which clearly makes an assertion of notability through the Filmography section. This is not the first time I've asked you to be more careful in tagging for speedy deletion. You do great work here in Wikipedia, but the incorrect speedy tagging is something you need to work on. Thanks, Gwernol 06:01, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

You may want to revert my revert

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I reverted User:Matthew Carroll quite a ways back, to the last good edit I could find. You had recently tagged it for speedy deletion as the userpage of a nonexistent user, but I found him listed by Listuser. Granted, there are no contributions listed by that user, but it is possible that all of his edits were to pages that have since been deleted. If there is something I'm missing here, please feel free to revert my revert. SWAdair 07:55, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I thought I didn't see anything in the logs and the user contributions link seemed to be missing, hence CSD U2. Oh well. MER-C 08:00, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I had a heck of a time finding his entry in the logs. Listuser is so quirky it sometimes borders on counter-intuitive. You can go looking for something and miss it without ever knowing it. It took me a while to find him and I'm used to listuser's quirks. Trust me, I'm not surprised at all that you didn't find him. SWAdair 08:09, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Comments by Blocked User

Comments by blocked user removed. As a blocked user, you are not entitled to edit Wikipedia.

Just a few clarifications, you are listed under Wikipedia:List of banned users as being under an indef ban by the community. I do admit your vandalism is funny, but it must be reverted netherless. I expect the userpages of your sockpuppets to disappear, have a look at this.
For the record, Template:Sockpuppet says "it is suspected that this user might be a sockpuppet or impersonator of" SOCKPUPPETEER.
I expect that page to be deleted or transwikied sometime in the next month. It seems that shafting vandal pages is the in thing around here. As for the rouge admins, there isn't a real argument for desysopping any of them except maybe Kelly Martin.
As for the sleeper accounts, I might have made a mistake on those. They looked very suspicious. Hence my suggestive language - "think" and "might".
The reason why I play whack-a-vandal is because vandals can be quite funny and brighten up my day. And the pages in the area of my interest are very static.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts - it's nice to see things from the other perspective. MER-C 09:52, 29 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
