Wilts & Berks edit

Hi Lucy, I was wondering how much of the canal has been rewatered and if it is worth putting these sections in the route map to give some idea of progress? Derek Andrews (talk) 11:48, 13 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Derek, still only 8 miles apparently, according the the most recent copy of Dragonfly, the W&BCT mag, which arrived this morning. I will query it, I thought it was more than that by now. Blimey, my group alone dug out nearly a mile at Childrey Wharf over the last year!
Is the route map that thing of beauty at the top of the page? In which case, I'd love to amend it: how do I access it to add more elements? I spent two hours last month reading help pages to try to find out how they were built, but failed. I wondered if they were individually managed. I also failed to find out how to build my own "me" page - that is, where do you get all the cute boxes and icons??

I've replied about the maps on the W&B page (should've done it here really). If there's some specific help you need concerning the maps, or anything else on WP, feel free to ask me a question on my talkpage. I can't promise an answer, but I might be able to point you in the right directions.
As for your user ("me") page, that is no different to any other page. When you see something you like on another user's page, just click 'edit', take a copy of the code and paste it to your own page. Don't forget to 'Show preview', to be certain it will appear as you want.

I see you've got the hang of userboxes... :o)
Re Wilts and Berks Canal naming -- you will find that this was the original name of the article, and it was moved (renamed) to reflect the historical name of the canal. As for the trust, can you explain why the first sentence of the Trust's homepage uses '&' (I just looked!)? More seriously, if 'and' is appropriate for the Trust, we can arrange for the article title to be changed (and must then make a note in the article that it differs from the Canal name).
Regarding your map query on my talk page, I'll answer there...

Yes, thank you, I now have the hang of userboxes - what fun!
I've started an enquiry re correct name of the canal and of the Trust, I will report back when I get a definitive answer. Don't hold your breath.
I've also had a first chop at the route map. I'm now concerned about there being too much detail, bearing in mind that I've only done my branch's section, and I've left out minor stuff like siphons, culverts, mileposts etc. If every branch filled in all their details, it would take a long time to load. I've started the enquiry with my Trust colleagues, as to how much detail they think is required. Any thoughts, anyone? It's in my sandbox if anyone would be kind enough to have a look.
...finally, is there a tenet on how many colons you add before someone goes back to the left-hand margin??!!Lucy Cassidy (talk) 14:25, 24 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've added some comments on your sandbox talk page -- hope they will help.
I think most people give up indenting when they get to about 8 or 10 colons!!
However, you can always do as I have here, when having a simple conversation between two people, and that is to continue your previous indent level.

"Might shame the lazy branches into doing their bits?"

Hello Lucy, you may have noticed I've been doing some major updates to the Wilts & Berks Canal map. (A quick who-am-i? - I'm also a member of the WBCT, a workparty member with MCC branch, currently working on the restoration at Pewsham Locks.) I'm quite familiar with the status of the canal west of Swindon, having worked and walked on most of it, but information about the east side is hard to come by in these parts. (There be dragons...) Looking at recent satellite images on Google Earth, I only see tractor tracks in some places where there is supposedly restored sections, and the lengths of other reported sections just don't measure up to the length of water that's visible, so I'm really uncertain what the status actually is 'over there'.

In my travels, I came across the map in your sandbox, which has lots of interesting detail, and I'm wondering how accurate is it? I know you were just practicing and I didn't think the Wantage branch (looks nice in blue :-) was going to be restored, but as you're presumably on 'that side' of Swindon is there any of the extra detail there that could be applied to the live map? In an attempt to convey how much of the canal is in currently restored, I've been adding the lengths of each section in water. (I hope it won't be too long before we can reverse it and only have to 'count down' the sections left to be completed). It would be nice to get all the 'in water' sections marked up, I'm quite happy to do the editing to the live map if you can prompt me with the needed detail about anything you're aware of that's missing.
