Redundancy

edit

I was under the impression that a super-earth was a "an extrasolar terrestrial planet". Was the repeat of that in the Gliese 581 c article for people who didn't click the link? In a GA review, someone will almost certainly make a comment on that. You also reverted my minor copyediting, was this intentional or accidental? -- Logical Premise Ergo? 03:47, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

You may have noticed that in the article the term "Super-Earth" is in quotes, and as was noted in the talk page of the article for Gliese 581 c most recently not everyone agrees with that assesment. But it is unfortunately that is how the media and scientist have refered to it. I argued at the Super-Earth article that it is a misnomer, in some cases, and in the end all reference to anything but mass was removed from that article for clarification. the idea of stating both is for those who appreciate that it is a "quote" and that it is qualified by referencing, and though thoroughly published not necessarily accurate. ie a Super-Venus is more likely. I think the reasoning on what you call redundant is clear enough to the GA review people considering the made no comment about it recently when the reviewed it twice this month. As to you other edits in the same edit, it was neither, just inconsiderate of me. I feel no responsibility for your mistake of making many small edits all together, which I recommend that you don't as others that disagree with one of your edits can revert the whole thing just as I did... I was not feeling charitable towards you but I appreciate your level headed contact of me directly now. I meant to go back and replace the other parts, that made sense, but ran out of time. Notability in the Information Age

edit

I appreciate the tag on the notability issue on the WILDSOUND FILM FESTIVAL page, and like that it comes from someone who seems to care both about integrity and getting personally involved. My defense of the inclusion of WILDSOUND in Wikipedia is rooted in the same place.

Wildsound has not been featured in books, or magazines, or in any form of printed catalogue or listing. It has been mentioned in passing in several newspaper articles, but nothing where the festival itself is more than a name used to cite someone else's credits.

Wildsound is a festival and organization completely promoted and advertised on the Internet, whose website attracts upwards of 50,000 unique visitors per month and whose competitions are entered by hundreds of filmmakers and screenwriters during every monthly deadline period. Its live events are attended by nearly sold-out crowds at Toronto's National Film Board.

It does not care that there has been no interest from the traditional media in its unique format and its international scope. Canadian media outlets avoid anything that isn't funded by the government and features artists that aren't exclusively home-grown. In order to attract a world-wide audience, Wildsound has totally eschewed the traditional kinds of marketing used in this country, focusing exclusively on the Web to build an audience and to network with artists.

That's the reason none of the sources cited on the Wikipedia page refer to print media. There are none. But for filmmakers and film fans, all the important sources prove the influence and notability of this unique festival. IMDB is the ultimate resource for film credits and credibility, and Withoutabox is an almost indispensable tool for filmmakers to submit their work to accredited festivals. Wildsound and its creator, Wildcard Pictures Corp, are recognized by both.

I would hate the fact that Wildsound has deviated from traditional marketing and promotion techniques to exclude it from Wikipedia, which, admittedly, spent its own early years in the same position. Let me know if you feel able to remove the citation from the page, or if you have some suggestion of some other proof of notability that would allow you to feel comfortable doing so. Otherwise, I'll leave it as a challenge to Wildsound.

AfC news

edit

Dear AfC participant,

  1. Msgj and Tnxman307 are organising the AfC challenge! It's a little competition to help improve some of the articles created through AfC and we are hoping that everyone will get involved. For level 1, you just need to bring a stub up to Start-class. Level 2 is improving a Start-class article to C-class. And so on. To get involved or for more information please see the competition page.
  2. Those of you who haven't reviewed an article recently might not have noticed the new process that was implemented this year. Reviewing articles is now more enjoyable than ever :) You might like to give it a try. All articles waiting for review are in Category:Pending Afc requests. (Please read the updated instructions.)
  3. Please consider adding {{AFC status}} to your userpage to keep track of the number of articles waiting for review. At the time of writing we are officially backlogged, so help is needed!
  4. There is currently a proposal to bring the Images for upload process under the umbrella of WikiProject Articles for creation. The rationale is that both processes are designed to allow unregistered users to take part more fully in Wikipedia, and partipants in each process can probably help each other.

If you no longer wish to receive messages from WikiProject Articles for creation, please remove your name from this list. Thank you.

RFC on me, not poetry

edit

I find this RFC on me discouraging overall but it isn't stopping from learning which is why I use wikipedia. I started editing in the encyclopedia because I found errors in what I was looking at and that didn't help what I was trying to learn. You took an exception to my saying some scientists are ignorant and that is why you didn't bother to help with the Planetary Human Habitability article, but then you went on to edit at the Gliese 581 c talk page and I would note that no one is improving the Super-Earth article to clarify what is meant there and what is not. I hate the term as bias and narrow minded since it excludes the idea of a Super-Venus, or a Super-Mars, Super-Titan etc. so I won't be arguing with people there. As for my use of the term "ignorant" I don't appologize for that as all I have to do is look at the article for Habitability to know what astrophysicits are not getting, they are talking over the word without carifying when they are using it for extremeophile life and when they are using it for people, and I think creating that confusion is ignorant. You added a comment on the talkpage of the RFC on me and I am surprised that you are not in support of banning or deleting my account. I think that is gracious of you and more forgiving than me. I don't quite understand it but neither am I fishing for compliments. I wanted to add sarcastic remarks to the discussion on Gliese 581 c after Icalanise left things hanging on the Super-Earth not being made of "earth" discusion. There is a clear example of his thinking he must be right and then running off when he can't continue the discussion. He has to have the last word, and I pity him for that. But all this to say thanks for the comment at the RFC talkpage. and you are right, I will leave, (in that case) I don't need to edit to learn what I want to to make a better Stargen.

Great it looks like GabrielVelasquez is persisting in attacks on me. Nice. If not ARBCOM, what? Icalanise (talk) Note I have opened an WP:RFARB because of his comment here and on other talk pages, as a participant in the RfC you might be interested in it. 17:18, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

WP:Missing Wikipedians

edit

Hey there. Nice userpage. Unfortunely it seems you haven't edited for a while, and this is to inform you that I've added this username to the list of missing Wikipedians. If you don't want to be listed just go ahead and remove your name. However, would I be correct to infer from your Wikiwangst poem that you're still editing under an alternate account? If so, why not just redirect to your new account's userpage? -- œ 07:41, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey! I saw you as a member on the Guild of Copy-Editors and am wondering if you could help me out with an article I am working on, the Nobel Prize. A quite important article since, many link to it etc. I think the content is starting to get good but it really needs some copy-editing and sourcing love. Do you have any chance to help out? --Esuzu 21:58, 15 January 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Esuzu (talkcontribs)

WikiProject Economics census

edit

Hello there. Sorry to bother you, but you are (titularly at least) a member of WP:WikiProject Economics, as defined by this category. If you don't know me, I'm a Wikipedia administrator, but an unqualified economist. I enjoy writing about economics, but I'm not very good at it, which is why I would like to support in any way I can the strong body of economists here on Wikipedia. I'm only bothering you because you are probably one of them. Together, I'd like us to establish the future direction of WikiProject Economics, but first, we need to know who we've got to help.

Whatever your area of expertise or level of qualification, if you're interested in helping with the WikiProject (even if only as part of a larger commitment to this wonderful online encyclopedia of ours), would you mind adding your signature to this page? It only takes a second. Thank you.

Grab some glory, and a barnstar

edit

Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7500 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 14:56, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

edit
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Stats
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.

The Guild of Copy-Editors – September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive

The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invite you to participate in the September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 September at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 September at 23:59 (UTC). The goals for this drive are to eliminate 2008 from the queue and to reduce the backlog to fewer than 5,000 articles.

Sign-up has already begun at the September drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

Awards and barnstars
A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants. Some are exclusive to GoCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.
