Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Logan. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

Many thanks for the feedback and improvement. What can we do about 'original research' and to which part does it refer to exactly? 13:51, 12 January 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stefanbrussel (talkcontribs)

Huggle message

Hey Logan! You are receiving this message because you are subscribed at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members#Beta_testers

I have recently launched a new downloads for beta testers that contains nightly builds of huggle, eg. versions that are built every day from our master branch and contains latest huggle. These builds are currently provided only for Windows and Ubuntu. You can find them here: http://huggle.wmflabs.org/builds/

Please keep in mind that these don't have any automatic updates and if you download and start using nightly build, you will need to update it yourself! So don't get yourself to running old version, it's possible to install both stable and nightly huggle, which is what I suggest.

Keep the bug reports coming to phabricator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/create/?projects=Huggle Many thanks! Petrb (talk) 09:51, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Logan,

I'm Fabrizio Giudici, the author of the project. I just saw the notification you sent me by email.

As you noted, the project is currently no more developed. I'm not saying I've dismissed it, but it's frozen. Maybe some day I'll resume working on it, maybe not. In any case I don't think there's a reason for a Wikipedia page on it. I was rather surprised to find the page, actually.

Cheers. 79.44.120.86 (talk) 01:39, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

IP warning

When you warned User:50.110.183.76 on their talk page, you should have used a Level 2 warning. They had already received a Level 1 warning. ElectricBurst(Electron firings)(Zaps) 16:41, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Huggle automatically used a level 1 warning because 13 days have elapsed since that level 1. You generally only escalate the level if the contributions happen within a reasonably close amount of time. Logan Talk Contributions 16:43, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Wrong person

Hello Logan, I'm afraid that my name is not Oliver and nor do I have a clue about any Cirencester Deer Park. I don't understand how I saw your message when I have never in my life made any contribution to Wikipedia.

Images

Hi Logan, I am currently working to add images to Wikipedias and was wondering if you would like to help. I am currently working on the Chinese and Portuguese Wikipedia. It does not require any language skills and is a long term project (years). In the past year we have added over 25.000 images to 15 Wikipedia languages. You can read more at simple:User:Taketa/Wikidata Images/Global overview. For example, you could go to the Chinese category, click on an article, go the English Wikipedia, copy the image, and place the image on the Chinese Wikipedia article. Very easy. Let me know if you want to help (so I can more easily keep track of statistics). All the best, Taketa (talk) 11:24, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:DoubleClick logo.png

Thanks for uploading File:DoubleClick logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 02:24, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

Interview request

Hi Logan,

I'm a journalist from Melbourne.

I've been writing a lot about problems with football in East Timor, and I see you have stopped the sock puppeting that Andy4190 was up to.

I was hoping I might be able to speak to you about that.

Many thanks, Jack Jckkrr (talk) 23:57, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
