Welcome

Welcome to Wikipedia! I'd like to take the opportunity to give you a few tips and tricks; you might think of this as a basic orientation to membership in the editing community of this project.

We have quite a few guidelines and policies for editor conduct here. Not everyone agrees with all of these rules but most of us agree with those labeled Policy; and those labeled Guideline have broad, though not universal support. These policies and guidelines are in constant flux but those that have remained fairly stable over time are highly respected. I suggest you take some time to familiarize yourself with these.

A good starting place is Help:Editing. This will teach you about the mechanics of editing using our tools.

Another important starting place is Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. I strongly suggest you follow all the links from this page, especially those listed at the bottom under See Also.

Nearly every policy-related page is linked to one or more others. You may wish to spend several hours reviewing this material. Although officially we welcome all users to Edit this page, in practice it takes several months of daily editing before you can expect to avoid all common mistakes. Meanwhile, you may be schooled -- gently, we hope, but not always -- by experienced editors who have discovered some error in your work. I suggest you listen carefully to all comments and try to keep an open mind.

Vanity and sockpuppetry

Like many new editors, you seem to have run afoul of one of our most strict guidelines; I expect it to be elevated to policy soon. This is Wikipedia:Vanity guidelines. Strictly speaking, it is not a violation of policy to create an article about yourself or your company; but so many editors have strong feelings about this that it is unwise. It leads to the kind of fine-toothed scrutiny that leads to articles being deleted on other grounds.

Our position is If you are notable, then sooner or later some other editor will create an article about you. You don't need to do it yourself. Again, no need for you to edit an article about yourself; somebody else will find out whatever factual information is available publicly and insert it or correct it. If some fact about you is not publicly available then we can't publish it anyway.

You appear to have committed another faux pas: sockpuppetry. This droll term refers to the act of editing under more than one registered user name. You seem to deny this in your email to User:Nagle; but this is not really here nor there: there is no way to prove, absolutely, that a user is a sock; nor is there any way to disprove it. Experienced members of our community can and do make rapid judgements of sockpuppetry; some admins are able to perform internal checks but results are never absolutely conclusive.

Nonetheless, it is the prevailing opinion that Lee Asher was created by you; and there is very little you can do to dispel this perception. If you abandon all efforts to edit this article (and perhaps abandon Generuffalo (talk · contribs)) then in time the issue will fade away. John Reid 06:24, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work contained within this image, you will need to specify

1. the creator of the original work
2. the copyright status of the original work, usually indicated by adding a licensing tag. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
