Arctic Cordillera edit

Hi Lanma726. As you seem to be the creator of Image:AppalachianLocatorMap2.png, is it possible you could make a map for the Arctic Cordillera mountain range? It is the only major mountain range in North America that doesn't have a map. Black Tusk 19:20, 15 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Black Tusk 01:50, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yep, looks good. I'll let you know if there needs to be an adjustment. Black Tusk 10:23, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Just a question (no change). Where did you find the other three small sections of the Arctic Cordillera on southern Baffin Island? I haven't seen any maps that include that part of Baffin Island. However, it seems to make sense to include them because of the large gap between the Torngat Mountains in Labrador and the Baffin Mountains on northeastern Baffin Island. Black Tusk 02:23, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I see. Do you know the name of these three mountain ranges or sections? I'm trying to find as many mountain ranges as I can to expand the Arctic Cordillera article and make more mountain range articles related to the cordillera. I looked on Google Earth myself and those sections are snow-covered so they must be pretty high mountain ranges like the rest of the range.
Also, the Arctic Cordillera appears to branch off northwest from Devon Island to Cornwalls Island, Ellef Ringnes Island, Lougheed Island, Edmund Walker Island, Grosvemnor Island, Helena Island, Sherard Osborn Island, Cameron Island, Bathurst Island, Bradford Island, Little Cornwalls Island, Milne Island, Houston Stewart Island, Baillie Hamilton Island etc. Is it possible to make the earthquake swarm map on the site here? Black Tusk 22:51, 18 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi Lanma726. I searched the islands I listed above and they appear to have mountain ranges. Bathurst Island contains mountain ranges called the Scoresby Hills, Grogan Morgan Range and Jeffries Range. Mountain ranges on northwestern Devon Island include Grinnell Range, Haddington Range and Douro Range. The Adam Range lies on Île Vanier. Don't be confused over the Arctic Cordillera ecozone, which covers Ellesmere Island, eastern Devon Island, Bylot Island, eastern Baffin Island and the northernmost tip of Labrador (the Arctic Cordillera mountain system contains the Arctic Cordillera ecozone). The map only appears to show the major mountainous areas of the cordillera. If you search Arctic Cordillera on Google Earth it will highlight all the areas related to the Arctic Cordillera mountain system. Perhaps the other sections should be included. I will be adding the islands and ranges above to the article.
Also don't make the earthquake map I said above. Black Tusk 02:23, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Canterburyflames.gif edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Canterburyflames.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 04:03, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:MelvinDay1948.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:MelvinDay1948.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Netball, iwi and waka edit

Thanks, Matt! User:Dramatic actually made the template for a proposed Netball WikiProject. Dramatic forgot to clear the template with WP:WSS/P first, so I'm trying to bring it up to "speedy create" standard before reporting it at the Discoveries page.

BTW, great work on the Māori iwi and Māori waka articles. You've done an awesome amount of work in two days. Great to see! Liveste (talkedits) 23:08, 8 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the correction Liveste! I have listed the Netball-stub template at the WP:WSS/P (which I discovered 10 minutes after creating it!), and it seems to be getting support there. I hope both of you will indicate support for a project at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Council/Proposals#Netball. I've started building a project page behind the scenes at User:Dramatic/Netball, and will work on some of the sub-templates and a project banner this weekend. Feel free to suggest any components you like from other projects! (I've used the rugby union one as a basis so far - looked much better organised than the basketball project) dramatic (talk) 23:39, 8 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Netball WikiProject edit

I'm not actually interested in netball at all ... I only watch the article netball because of the ridiculous amount of vandalism it gets. I seemed to be the only one watching the article from July to October last year. So I support the project's creation ... I'm just not much into adding content. Hi again :-) Why does the map in Te Āti Awa depict Wellington and Nelson (which isn't mentioned in the article at all) rather than Wellington and Taranaki? dramatic (talk) 03:08, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

ok, looking at [1] you missed the area around New Plymouth also labelled as Te Ati Awa. Since Nelson is shared with a number of other iwi, I wonder if it would make sense to use a diluted colour there, and add a note?

Iwi locator maps edit

Hey Matt. I have spend quite a bit of time this morning moving your iwi locator maps to the Wikimedia commons so they can be used on all wikipedias, including the Maori one. I have put them into Category:Maori tribal maps on commons. I also removed the macrons, spaces and/or underscores from the file names that I saved them under at Commons, to avoid any cross-platform compatibility issues and to make it easier for people who don't know how to type macrons. I saw the comments above about different shades etc - I think that might make verification too hard and it would be better to stick to your source map without adding interpretations - many tribal areas overlap, and that is not necessarily a strange thing in the Maori world view. Also adding comments or notes onto the images would drastically reduce their usability on wikipedias in other languages. It might be a good idea if you are adding any more of these to upload them directly to the Commons - you can use the GDFL tag there too, and it would also be good to place them into the category I mentioned before for use on Commons. If you use this when uploading on commons you should have no worries:

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Maorimix.jpg} edit

Thank you for uploading Image:Maorimix.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

 • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
 • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Copyright problems edit

Hello. Concerning your contribution, Image:NatLibWGTN.jpg, please note that Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted text or images obtained from other web sites or printed material, without the permission of the author(s). As a copyright violation, Image:NatLibWGTN.jpg appears to qualify for deletion under the speedy deletion criteria. Image:NatLibWGTN.jpg has been tagged for deletion, and may have been deleted by the time you see this message.

If you believe that the article or image is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) then you should do one of the following:

 • If you have permission from the author, leave a message explaining the details at Talk:Image:NatLibWGTN.jpg and send an email with the message to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
 • If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or released into the public domain leave a note at Talk:Image:NatLibWGTN.jpg with a link to where we can find that note.
 • If you own the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on Talk:Image:NatLibWGTN.jpg.

However, for textual content, you may simply consider rewriting the content in your own words. Thank you. XLerate (talk) 12:25, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, in the in image itself you could see three copyright symbols, not all flickr users understand or respect copyright. Regarding the building model it would be necessary to find the owner and terms. In any case, I think a photo of the building exterior may be better, if you're not in Wellington you can ask a wikipedian who is. XLerate (talk) 00:00, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Iwi edit

Awesome work on the iwi articles. Were you aware that the Māori wikipedia has hundreds of iwi and hapū stubs - I think there may be something like 1100 but I'm not certain. Here are the links to the Tainui ones for example. You may be able to reuse the templates for the iwi and hapu without much editing. If you look at an individual tribe's page on the MW, like mi:Ngāti Maniapoto or mi:Ngāti Raukawa, the subtribes of that tribe are listed in a template on the bottom. The source information for these is the National Library Website. The list given on this Wikipedia (based on an old one from the Māori Wikipedia that was prepared by users who had no Māori language) is not that accurate, and tends not to distinguish unrelated tribes with similar names from different rohe. The national library listings are pretty accurate for the most part, and they are systematic and comprehensive. Anyway, might be a help Kahuroa (talk) 10:17, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 04:46, 22 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Robert Arnold edit

Don't use mfd for articles in article space, use afd. Since there has already been an afd once before on this person, you'll need to follow the directions for submitting a second afd. Corvus cornixtalk 23:46, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:DoC.gif) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:DoC.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:14, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image source problem with Image:Gottfried Lindauer self portrait.jpg edit

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Gottfried Lindauer self portrait.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 09:31, 28 June 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 09:31, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:Kit body thunderbirds.png edit

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Kit body thunderbirds.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Sdrtirs (talk) 02:11, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

IFNA Game Plan 2007–2011 edit

Hi, Matt. On the Netball article, you quoted the IFNA Game Plan 2007–2011 as a source. Were you able to access it on the Internet, or do you have a copy of it? I'm writing an article on the "History of netball", which I hope to finish in about two days, and the IFNA document would be useful in a "Present status and future" section. Cheers. Thanks for giving me a copy of the PDF file. I've published the History of netball article: there were a lot of journal articles I couldn't access, so if you have any other information, feel free to include it. Thanks again. Liveste (talkedits) 06:38, 22 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
