Linkspam edit

Hello, I'm 76.102.49.177. I wanted to let you know that I removed an external link you added, because to me it seemed inappropriate for an encyclopedia. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page, or take a look at our guidelines about links. Thank you. 76.102.49.177 (talk) 21:35, 7 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

You are inserting a lot of links to the same site into Wikipedia. This is borderline linkspam... you really ought to stop and consider whether your linking is helpful to each individual article. SWATJester Son of the Defender 23:51, 7 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I did not intend to post a link multiple times, if that is what is occurring. I am an intern for the New Books Network and I am adding an external link to the interviews that the author and/or book was a part of. If the author and/or book does not want their interview to be mentioned, then that is fine, but I am not putting up spam links and I do believe that it is helpful for both parties. Kristine Daggett 02:28, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Okay, HUGE red flags here. You have a Conflict of Interest. You absolutely should not be adding links for New Books Network to articles. You want to promote your employer, use Facebook or MySpace. Somebody's going to have to go back through your edits and undo all of them. I had doubts about the notability of the NBN when I first saw your edits; now I'm certain they don't belong. 76.102.49.177 (talk) 02:58, 8 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's also promoting the author and his/her book. These are useful links to interviews that can be used a quotable sources. Kristine Daggett 03:02, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

This is clearly not an issue I will be resolving and I will be escalating this to my internship supervisor. Kristine Daggett 03:06, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Be sure to have them read the Conflict of Interest guidelines. 76.102.49.177 (talk) 03:09, 8 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
I appreciate that you have the best of intentions, thanks, but if it's decided that this is linkspam, an admin might even blacklist NBN links altogether. Yes, check out possible COI and also seek advice from your supervisor. Regards, Esowteric+Talk 09:08, 8 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Also maybe have a look at Wikipedia:External links? Esowteric+Talk 09:19, 8 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi 76.102.49.177. I'm Marshall Poe, and I founded and run the NBN. I've also contributed to Wikipedia for many years (though not in the last few, I confess). I see what you mean about an apparent COI regarding the interview links Kristin is adding, and if you think they are spam, then so be it. I don't think they are for a few reasons: a) the NBN is a public-spirited project aimed at educating the public about new books through interviewing their authors. No one makes any money on the NBN; all the interviewers and guests are volunteers; Kristin is a college student looking for experience and she is not being paid either; b) the purpose of posting the links is not to promote the NBN, but to give those interested in the scholars' work access to it in audio form; the scholar is the focus, not the NBN; c) there is ample precedent for posting links to interviews with authors and other figures on Wikipedia by news outlets (for-profit organizations). In short, we're not interested in promoting the NBN at all; we're interested in providing Wikipedia visitors with a resource they might use to understand the author and his/her work. Anyway, that's what I think. But it's your call. Warmest Regards, MP

Many thanks for the candid explanation, Marshall. Good luck. Regards, Esowteric+Talk 11:29, 8 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi again, Marshall. Got your message on my talk page and have asked a more experienced editor Jayen466 if he has a moment to advise on ways forward. Regards, Esowteric+Talk 18:55, 9 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I am a little torn here. On the one hand, the New Book Network is not particularly prominent – I can't find any third-party media coverage of it in Google News – so it seems WP:Undue to include a great amount of its material here. On the other hand, I understand that the interviews may add value to an article. I would probably lean towards placing a few links to particularly meaningful interviews, "the best of the best", as it were, in articles that lack good external links, and leave it at that. On the other hand, you have an invitation of the Teahouse below, and it may be a good idea to ask a few more people for their advice there; I am not quite sure what the wider consensus would be in this case. Sorry I cannot be more decisive here! JN466 14:19, 19 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Thinking about it, the best thing to do would probably be to drop links on the article's talk pages and ask if anyone would like to add them, on an article-by-article basis. That would be in line with the advice for conflict-of-interest editing, which is to use the talk page to make suggestions, rather than editing the article directly. I think that approach would be above board. JN466 21:04, 19 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Jayen466! MarshallPoe (talk) 15:01, 21 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Timothy Brook edit

Thanks a lot for the message on the Timothy Brook talk page. I'll look at that in a minute, Kristine.

Update: Yes, that's fine. Thanks for the heads up on the new book The Troubled Empire: China in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties. There isn't an article for that as yet, so have added the book to his list of books and the interview to the interviews section of the Timothy Brook page.

For now, the phrases "The Troubled Empire" and "The Troubled Empire: China in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties" redirect to Timothy Brook. Regards, Eric: Esowteric+Talk 18:50, 23 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Update: Have created a stub article for The Troubled Empire: China in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties and added the interview there. Thanks again. Regards, Eric: Esowteric+Talk 10:28, 24 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
