August 2012 edit

Hello, I'm Srich32977. I wanted to let you know that I undid one of your recent contributions to Human Terrain Systems because it didn't appear constructive. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks! Your editing was reverted by another editor, but I wanted you to know that your particular edits are unacceptable. S. Rich (talk) 22:13, 24 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sir/Ma'am. My name Dr Christopher King and I am the Director of Social Science for Human Terrain System (HTS). My username is kingchri.
I recently made changes to the page. I made these changes because as the Director of Social Science for the program I am developing our communication outreach for the HTS program. In doing so I believe HTS has the obligation to post and/or remove information or images that we believe to be inaccurate. For example, the image in the history section is of a person who is not and was not part of HTS. Additionally, the image under Design and Organization Structure is of a HTS classroom setting. However this was not posted with permission from one of the people in the image and they would like the image removed. HTS believes people should have some right of control of their image on the internet so we want to remove this image.
Lastly, in the coming month our plan is to completely rework this page to provide the most current information about the program as well as to expand on our history. I am relatively new to this editing process. Is there a way in which HTS can be the "owner" of this page.
Dr King
Srich32977,
Indeed, I would really like to delete that classroom image. The image was taken with the consent of the people to post this on the internet. They would like the image removed. This is a minor edit and does not affect content of the page in any way.

Human Terrain System edit

Hi Kingchri,

Again, welcome to Wikipedia. I've noticed that in your last few edits you have deleted sections of the Human Terrain System article. I have reverted these edits for now as there was no reason given for these deletions. However, if you did in fact intend to delete these section, and you think there is a valid reason for doing so, please start a discussion on the article's talk page here. Also, when you edit a page, please remember to leave a short explanation of your edit in the "edit summary" box (just below the editing box).

Thanks and all best,

Lorelei (talk) 22:17, 24 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Continued blanking edit

Hi Kingchri,

I see you blanked another section after being told it isn't appropriate, although you are new, and may not yet have even learned to read your talk page.

If you have a valid reason for removing the material, please include a brief summary in the edit summary, then explain on the article talk page. You might have a valid reason, and editors are willing to listen to reason. However, if you continue to blank sections and do not explain why, it looks like vandalism.

Please explain why you are making these edits, or we will not permit you to continue.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 00:05, 25 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

My reasons are provided in the proper section of HTS page I believe. My name Dr Christopher King and I am the Director of Social Science for Human Terrain System (HTS). My username is kingchri. COI edit

Hello, Kingchri. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Human Terrain System, you may need to consider our guidance on conflicts of interest.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Be cautious about deletion discussions. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources in deletion discussions, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. S. Rich (talk) 00:12, 25 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, WP is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit, thus no ownership will be allowed. I recommend you read up on the principles listed above, and then feel free to edit IAW those guidelines and policies. Regarding the photo, it is listed as a USG produced image, so -- according to my understanding -- no copyright protection is possible. (I know very little about that subject.) But if there are corrections, then post them on the image talk page for discussion.--S. Rich (talk) 00:18, 25 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Conflict of Interest edit

Thanks for finally responding, Kingchri, there was a lot of puzzlement regarding your edits.

This will surprise you, but not only is there no way that "HTS can be the "owner" of this page", you are discouraged form editing it.

Almost every day, someone requests the authority to be the owner of a page. Simply stated, no way, never. Not even the founder of Wikipedia Jimbo Wales, has that authority, not even over the article about him, not even the article about the history of Wikipedia. This is proudly the encyclopedia that anyone can edit. There are rare, and limited exceptions; some pages need to be protected when they are the target of vandals, but even there, we has a process to include edits of those who cannot edit directly.

There are two major exceptions to the policy that anyone can edit:

  1. Subject of an article expected not to edit an article about themselves
  2. People who have a wp:COI (and you do), are strongly discouraged from editing articles in which they have an interest. Some manage to do so without fuss, but we prefer that editors who have a COI post requests to the article talk page, where other editors can make the call.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 00:21, 25 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Edit war advisory edit

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. You appear to be engaged in an edit war with one or more editors according to your reverts at Human Terrain System. Although repeatedly reverting or undoing another editor's contributions may seem necessary to protect your preferred version of a page, on Wikipedia this is usually seen as obstructing the normal editing process, and often creates animosity between editors. Instead of edit warring, please try to reach a consensus on the talk page.

If editors continue to revert to their preferred version they are likely to be blocked from editing. This isn't done to punish an editor, but to prevent the disruption caused by edit warring. In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. While edit warring on Wikipedia is not acceptable in any amount, breaking the three-revert rule is very likely to lead to a block. Thank you. Re the recent reverts and section blanking. S. Rich (talk) 00:24, 25 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

I understand the point of non-ownership and the point of the danger of conflict of interest. However, I do also see that there is a lot of information on this page is factually incorrect. In addition, the continued usage of the classroom image is a practice in poor ethics if an image will not removed even though consent to post the image of person in the photo were never attained. In the coming months additional facting and images ethically obtained with consent of the person involved will be provided. We will recommend the changes this editorial board so change as requested.

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button   or   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when they said it. Thank you. Also, please add a colon (:) to the start of the paragraphs that you are adding. This indents the comment and helps distinguish who is saying what in the discussions. S. Rich (talk) 00:43, 25 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
