Eleanor

I didn't edit because I simply thought it to be wrong, but because of what I found out about it. I was thinking about leaving the bit about Helen, but the part afterwards is quite clear about the meaning (it's the first known bearer of the name after all). So, it's not true that I didn't offer another explanation, since it was already in the article. Concerning the sources, I can only find one page stating the origin of the name to be Helen, while all the others say that it has a french/teutonic origin. Some mix it up, but even those connecting it to Helen mention Eleanor of Aquitaine to be the first known bearer. So maybe they simply connected it to "Elene"/"Elena" (-> Helen) and the similar sounding arabian name (which is mentionned in the article), because they didn't know about the meaning in the Occitan language. If the part about Helen should be included, it should be mentioned afterwards and as being uncertain, since the part about the origin of the name being "Alienor" is certain (like I said it is even mentioned on pages that state the origin to be Helen). And there connecting "Alienor" to Helen is already more difficult since the sound isn't close to Elena or Elene at all. The french wikipedia also explains the meaning of Alienor and Eleanor in the same way. So in fact a valid source for the connection to Helen is much more needed than for the connection to Alienor. I hope that this is what you consider "valid research" :) 81.56.106.64 11:56, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

What do you mean "basis"?. The article doesn't state any sources whatsoever, so it doesn't have a basis either, has it? 81.56.106.64 21:52, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Ah, it's cool about the signing thing (a rookie like me should be the last one to criticise!). Well, if there was errors in the "Buffalo" bit then I can escape the blame partly - I copied it as a citation from another page. Thank you for making a report on Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Reporting and removing vandalism is vital to the functioning of Wikipedia and all users are encouraged to revert, warn, and report vandalism. However, administrators are generally only able to block users if they have received a recent final warning (one that mentions that the user may be blocked) and they have recently vandalized after that warning was given. Regarding edits made to Beaner

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia, Jonomacdrones! However, your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove spam from Wikipedia. If you were trying to insert a good link, please accept my creator's apologies, but note that the link you added, matching rule \burbandictionary\.com\/, is on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. Please read Wikipedia's external links policy for more information. If the link was to an image, please read Wikipedia's image tutorial on how to use a more appropriate method to insert the image into an article. Hey. I see you reporting this IP to AIV, as they had vandalized past a last warning. I've removed the report, since their last warning was 6 days ago and it's an IP address. Also, they seem to have stopped. If you encounter them again today, please report them. Thanks! Natalie 18:24, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

No problem. Since it's a school IP, there's a real good chance that whoever started vandalizing hadn't seen the warnings. I think they've stopped for good (fingers crossed). Natalie 18:53, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Biographies of living people

This edit was completely unacceptable. If someone removes unsourced statements from a biography of a living person, those statements should stay out until they can be properly sourced. Please read WP:BLP and revert more carefully in the future. Thank you, Mak (talk) 21:33, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Please make an effort to ascertain the details of an edit first, i made that revert on a NPOV issue- those were somebody's own personal biases. Cheers Jonomacdrones 23:19, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
I did ascertain the details. You replaced basically libelous material into an article on a living person without any sources whatsoever. This is completely and utterly unacceptable. Mak (talk) 23:32, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
No, the edit before that was the stuff about him being the worst something or other, i removed that- That is the libellous information without sources, it is information which could damage a person's reputation which is not necessarily true- that is one, albeit of many, legal definition of libel. My edit removed this. Jonomacdrones 23:35, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, perhaps it was a mistake but this diff clearly shows you replacing libelous material which someone else removed, and the next edit adding fact tags to further crappy material. Mak (talk) 23:44, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
If i'm honest with you, it seemed a more productive alternative to getting into an edit war, and i don't particularly like removing stuff from wikipedia if it can be supported- the guy could have statistically been the worst coach- I'd presume that the guy writing the article didn't mean statistically, but this way it left the way open for someone to prove or disprove this. I see now it caused more problems than the couple it solved. Jonomacdrones 23:49, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
I'm glad you see that. Please remember that these articles are about real people with real feelings, who will very likely eventually read them. We should never allow material like that without a solid source in a biography of a living person. Mak (talk) 23:53, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
I know, i will easily concede that, but when you see a {{fact}} tag, what do you automatically think? I almost always think of it like an invitation for agreement- the edittor knows they have no source and knows it should probably be gone, yet the fact may stand and so it should be tagged so others can offer assent by placing a source, or dissent by removing it. Obviously the original edittor believed this deeply enough to keep adding it, but if i tag it someone else with more knowledge on the subject can give their opinion. Thats a very long winded way of communicating my point, but i hope you get the gist of what i am saying, Jonomacdrones 23:58, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Have you read WP:BLP yet? It is policy. Please read it. Biographies of living people are in a separate class, and must be treated with special care and vigilance. There should not be {{fact}} tags in a BLP, disputed facts should be either sourced or removed. Period. Mak (talk) 00:13, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Re: mb20

My edits are in line with Wikipedia:Naming conventions. See also Talk:Matchbox Twenty#Requested move. I suggest that you take a closer look at Wikipedia:Vandalism before you warn me. Jogers (talk) 11:21, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

The article mentions that the band name is sometimes typeset as "matchbox twenty" which is perfectly enough. Technical restrictions are not the case here. Jogers (talk) 11:51, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Actually, most pages I found on Google refer to them as "Matchbox Twenty". Wikipedia:Manual of Style (trademarks) is another relevant guideline: follow standard English text formatting and capitalization rules even if the trademark owner encourages special treatment. Renaming Microsoft to Micro$oft would be a good example if the company officially used the second spelling. In that case the article should be named just Microsoft and possibly mention the stylized typography in the lead section. This would be more similar to this case when "official" capitalization is replaced with proper one. Jogers (talk) 12:13, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
What official sources do is less relevant than what secondary sources do. The proper capitalization in English language is "Matchbox Twenty". I'm not sure what is your point about "mATCH bOX tWENTY". Jogers (talk) 12:37, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
According to what some folks say at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (trademarks) the band name qualifies as trademark. Please, consider discussing your doubts there. Jogers (talk) 13:24, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
I don't follow. WP:MOS-TM refers not only to special characters but also says to "capitalize trademarks, as with proper names" and "follow standard English text formatting and capitalization rules even if the trademark owner encourages special treatment". I find this perfectly clear. The issue of non-standard capitalization of band names has been discussed on several occasions and as far as I know the consensus was always in favor of standard English capitalization. I don't see a reason to make an exception in this case. Jogers (talk) 13:52, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
I see no absurdity here but consider sharing your thoughts at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (trademarks). Consensus can change although I find it quite unlikely in this case. There is nothing special about this band name that would differentiate it from The Pillows or Kiss among many examples of articles that sparked extensive discussions about usage of non-standard capitalization of band names in Wikipedia articles. I'm sorry I wasn't more convincing. Jogers (talk) 14:55, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Home Improvement articles

Please see my comment on talk:What About Bob? (Home Improvement) - I've no problem at all with CSD'ing all the episodes, but to single one out whilst leaving 20+ others whose content is no more informative seems inconsistent. - Iridescenti (talk to me!) 01:17, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Its the only one i saw, sorry- i was watching recent changes, spotted that and didn't think too far into it. Cheers, Jonomacdrones (talk) 01:20, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
On closer inspection they're all copyvios from http://epguides.com/HomeImprovement/season1.shtml - do you think it's better to CSD the episodes altogether or to leave the title, episode number and cast as a shell? - Iridescenti (talk to me!) 01:37, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
Whilst it'd be easier to report them as one, it'd ultimately mean an admin would need to go through them one by one- in the interest of ease, a CSD report should include the need for all to be removed and the creator's contributions list as a link, to provide a reference for how many there are. What are your thoughts? Cheers, Jonomacdrones (talk) 01:41, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
Myself and User:Tainter have gone through the list and deleted all the copyvio text, leaving just the titles, air date and cast as ultra-stubs - someone will no doubt recreate them legitimately fairly soon and this at least saves them the trouble of retyping all that. - Iridescenti (talk to me!) 01:52, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
Alright, cool- what of the guy who added all the stuff in the first place? Cheers, Jonomacdrones (talk) 02:03, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
He's got a talk page full of warnings; I'll keep an eye on him for the next couple of days to make sure he doesn't keep on doing it (so far, he's only added series 1). I think he's probably adding in good faith; I gave him some advice re adding links and stub-tagging when he first started adding them, and before I realised they were a copyvio, and he did go back and correct them. His edit history shows this to be his first day, so I think he's probably just overly keen - and I don't really want his "welcome to wikipedia" to be the AfD'ing of the first 24 articles he submits! - Iridescenti (talk to me!) 02:19, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

User:Jack0343 appears to be re-adding all the copyvio material... I've posted a note on the admin board[:He's restarted posting the copyvios - I've posted a note on the admin board[1] to watch him, as this I don't want this to turn into a revert war. - Iridescenti (talk to me!) 13:15, 25 March 2007 (UTC)] to watch him as I don't want this to turn into a revert war. - Iridescenti (talk to me!) 10:26, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Oh lord, alright- i'll keep an eye on whats going on since your last warning to him, but yeah- a revert war is that last thing we all need. Cheers, Jonomacdrones (talk) 13:30, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

I tagged this article with db-bio because I read the CSD instructions as noting that a previous speedy does not qualify an article for CSD on this basis, but the previous CSD category may.
