wikipedia project for school

Hello JoannaSerah, I have noticed that you have done a fair amount of work on wikipedia and recently on the ashville page. I am required for class to do a wikipedia page and I was wondering if you had any tips on where you found most of your research? For Asheville and other places in Western North Carolina, I search the local newspapers often: The Asheville Citizen-Times and the Watauga Democrat. You could use the County of Buncombe's website or the City of Asheville's website for some things, but I have found that they don't have a ton of info for use in the encyclopedia here. Just depends on what you are needing to know. Google searches actually bring up a lot of info, you just need to weed out what is not a reliable source. If you are in NC, you might check if your local library or school can help you use NC Live. Most all of what you find there will be a reliable source, but not all of it will be freely/easily accessible online to people outside of using NC Live. If you are wanting to use it on Wikipedia. You may not be able to link directly to the source here on Wikipedia, but you might still be able to quote it here. You could find the info/source you need on NC Live and then try to search for that on Google or something. Hope that helps -- JoannaSerah (talk) 22:49, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

English Assignment

Hi JoannaSerah, I'm a student at Clemson University doing editing the Kingstree, SC wikipedia pg for my English class. I noticed you edit Wikipedia a good bit and that you work with North and South Carolina. I was wondering if you could look at my recent edits and give me any pointers? The edits, generally, look alright to me. Just watch your spelling, grammar, etc. and your citations. You have cited them correctly, it appears (I did fix some spelling and dates were reversed), but the citations all come from a few sources it seems like and that source is older. Can that be found online anywhere? If not, that's really ok. There's lots of citations on Wikipedia that are offline.

One thing to consider, though: Is the addition of historic sites in the article really needed or notable enough? I think it may very well be, but since one of your sources really seems to be a tour guide-type article, some other editor may come along and delete it for non-notability. To ensure inclusion, you might need to come up with some other articles/books that show why the sites should be included. Unless Kinston, SC, is really notable for its historic sites, adding too much detail in that section might not be warranted. Plus, there is already an article for Kingstree Historic District. Those might be better suited for that page with a {{main}} or {{seealso}} placed in this article instead of linked at the See also section at the bottom.

The article itself needs more info on local government, local education, any other notable events/things and it needs some citations for the Notable people list. Even if the article something links to has a citation there, the citation needs to be in this article as well. Check out WP:CITE, WP:LAYOUT and WP:TOOLS. One thing I just noticed is that you named a citation (used name="The Kingstree News"), but then put in the full citation at the other instances where you needed to use them. You do not need to do that. Once you name a reference, you only have to recall that name: if you put in <ref name="The Kingstree News">{{cite| etc. }}</ref>, the next time you need to use the reference, you only have to put in <ref name="The Kingstree News" />. That way you don't have to type out or copy-paste the whole citation again. Saves a little time. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 02:17, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Burr Correction

Happy holidays. I don't mind the undo about the images of Richard and Aaron. I knew it was borderline on what I consider Wikipedia editorial license, but it was non-controversial in substance, and accurate. And perhaps I was checking as well to see who might be awake. ;) You are incorrect though I think about your cited rule. You faulted me for WP:ORIG (and for the indecipherable and much-abused "notability" thing) but you could have more accurately got me for WP:SYN and perhaps WP:NPOV. For WP:NPOV though, I think you'd have to take the position that the two can not neutrally be considered to resemble each other. Anyhow, thanks and of course no hard feelings. Wasn't really going to respond at first, but after thinking about it for a little while, I felt I should. You are right about notability being abused, but that doesn't mean we toss it out as a guideline. For many articles, it is not used enough. There is way too much non-notable items in WP. But, you know, it's just the nature of a user-edited site.

You might have something there with WP:SYN on the Richard Burr article. But, just linking two photos, though, doesn't really seem to measure up. If you had two articles that mention some resemblences somehow, maybe, but just two pictures calls on the reader to determine for themselves if they think there is a resemblence. It is really an opinion. And I wouldn't necessarily have to take a contrary opinion for it to be a POV statement. I could, in fact, agree with you, but that doesn't mean we should just put whatever we want on his page and wait for someone to come along and challenge it. That's backwards. I know WP might allow uncontroversial info in, but really, it prefers to have that info cited properly. Especially since he is a living person and would fall under WP:BLP. Burr's article (and a lot others) need a lot of work and have uncited info on them already, probably, but I just saw this and thought it wasn't really needed in his encyclopedia article. Hoax articles

I have come across several related articles that appear to be complete hoaxes. Unfortunately, some people have been using some of them to put bad info on true articles. I'm not sure the motivations. It appears to center around Jews and Winemaking. Whatever they are hung up about, I don't care. They need to stop. Several of them have no citations or only one citation where it would be more difficult to try to track down. Some have (or used to have) images that are tagged as hoaxes or have been deleted as hoax/vandalism. I plan to track down the hoax articles first, then try to figure out who all has been perpetrating this vandalism. Think that might be hard, really since it seems like there is either a group of them, or just sock puppets. Anyway, here is the list of those related articles I think are pure hoaxes. There may be more related to them as well. I just only have so much time to work on it, though. (List was getting long and another user already had better list. See next sentence.)

Hi! Very glad you found my page on the Cohen Cruse Ruse. I actually was going to reach out to you in particular when I was ready to start trying to get these things deleted (which I very nearly was) as I saw your good work on several of the hoaxes. And please do feel free to add to that page if you find anything new, or clarify anything I've missed or misunderstood. Oh and FYI I am pretty certain the Henriques family & Basil Henriques are both real. Though that doesn't rule out the possibility of them having been contaminated with bad info. Well, I wouldn't say I enjoy sniffing these out as you state on the other page. lol. It's annoying as heck, especially when other users (usually IPs) use those false articles to edit real articles. Anyway...Thank you for your help. They don't seem to be editing those as much the last few days, but that's the way they will do. They'll go a week or so and then start making all these changes. Maybe they've moved on to other spoofs. Your discovery is disturbing and fascinating. I'd like to say something, as a Sefardic Jew and concerned editor. This association with wine, North Carolina (and surrounding area), obsession with Jewish heritage that is fake - it all reminds me of someone I know to be active on the web.

Having read User:Vivisel/cohen cruse ruse I will say no more about it, it cannot be investigated, let alone proved. But I think I know who's doing this. I regret I cannot be part of the general team, but I will certainly monitor some Jewish-related pages for anything like this.

You're welcome. I see your bot working and I figured it'd get around to them eventually, but while I have some free time, I'm going to chip away at some of the over-7,000 old WPNC tags and combine some of the other states that I know of that need to be corrected too.
