Paid to Edit

Thank you for your polite comments over at Project Spam. The discussion there is moving in a constructive direction, so rather than increasing the voluminous comments on that page, I will answer you here. I am paid as a copywriter, programmer and ad campaign manager. Wikipedia is a great research source, and I enjoy various benefits from reading, editing and creating Wikipedia content. The most important benefits are understanding of the subject matter, and understanding how people perceive the subject. Sometimes my Wikipedia involvement is for my own personal or professional interest, and sometimes I am charging a client to research and develop a document or an ad campaign. If I happen to edit an article while I am on the clock, that's just part of the research process. (Wikipedia absorbs way too much of my time.)

Most of my clients are large companies that have considerable marketing budgets. Any sort of benefit from being mentioned in Wikipedia would be extremely minor and no measureable effect on their business. I also work with some smaller clients, but you won't find any mention of them in Wikipedia. Frankly, Wikipedia is much less efficient than Adwords or Yahoo Search Marketing for advertising. Yeah, free is nice, but the clicks generated aren't worth nearly enough to cover my hourly rates. Not even close.

There is a real issue here. How does Wikipedia relate to marketing professionals? How do we include people and give them guidelines for acceptable participation, rather than exclude them by saying, "You're in marketing, so you must be doing linkspam."

Removed deletion tag

I removed the codes for deletion from "selective hierarchy" before reading the policy. My sincere apologies for any faux paux and I hope that this new version better reflects why I feel an article on 'selective hierarchy' is useful.

User boxes

Wiki policy prohibits user boxes that are polemical or divisive. User Liftarn has an "un American" box with the US flag upsidedown and a "America is a police state" user box. But, they are not templates, he has his own code on the page. If I ping him on it, it could get ugly. What can be done about this? Rlevse 12:33, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

I did a google image search for "Sockpuppet" and found some funny pictures. However, none of them contained Josh Dunkelman.

About my template

Thank you for the compliment. I was primarily planning on using the template for the "Trading Spaces" program outside of esperanza, altho I suppose it could be used outside of it too. There is a discussion going on about it at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza#Concerning "Trading Spaces". One objection has been raised, which is why I'm hesitant to release it. User:romarin thoroughly explained that it offended her on Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Programs. So I changed it, and User:Natalya agreed that the changes were for the better. WikiProject: SPAM support / RPG

Hi JFish. We only had a brief encouter in march so far (you probably don't remember). Anyhow, I am getting more and more active at Wikipedia and think I am in need of a little help when it comes to the "how to". Any help/guidance is appreciated.

I recently started to get seriously active regarding a seamingly old topic and would like to hear your opinion and thoughts about it. The best way to start is here: WikiProject:Spam Opinions and Facts wanted (Invitation)

I also provided some feedback regarding a specific spam case WikiProject:Spam destination360.com which raised a lot of questions on my part when it come to the part to how to go about those things.

Anyhow, I saw you [User:JiFish/RPG_CT|RPG Game Status Page]. Impressive. I ran unfortunately out of time to finish FF X. I barely scratched on FF X2 and FF9. FF7 and FF8 are flying around, unplayed. Chrono Cross, the PS1 Sequel of the SNES Game Chrono Trigger did not even made it into my PS2 yet :(. I got into the none-realtime RPG's from SQUARE-ENIX because of Chrono Trigger. I spent hours, correction, weeks of gameplay and still did not finish it, ever. Did you play it? Even finish it? If not, you got to have a look at it. You can play it on the PC with a SNES Emulator. I have the Emu and the Game as Emu file if you like to have a peek. You should buy a copy of the snes module if you like it. I think that makes the ROM copy legal or at least it should. I noticed the screenshot of a japanese PS1 Version in the WP Article about it. You know what, I need to check out, if there is an US Version of it available. It was voted on several occasions to be the best RPG ever. It has multiple different endings and more gameplay than the all PS2 Versions of FF together. I noticed you dumped the old armor list on FF Wiki.

And I want to let you know, as administrator of that Wiki, we have a thing going already about FF armor. The FF Wiki isn't a dumping ground for failed Wikipedian articles. Most of the material we write there comes from scratch. I know the FF Armor list is our collab, and I've done some major edits to various sections. But the FF Wiki isn't a dumping ground. Thanks! Your patrol of LEXX

I've been watching (but not participating in, pro or con) your repeated efforts to enforce WP:EL at LEXX. I love the topic (I flew halfway across the USA once to meet the cast of the show), so I applaud your efforts to ensure the highest quality for the article. However, I have a suggestion. May I put forth the idea that the reasons the other editor is disagreeing with you and trying to put more than one fansite link onto that page are:

• WP:EL is a style guide, not policy. While there may be consensus on having only one fansite link per page, I suggest that is more applicable to articles like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where there are thousands of fansites and scores of well-respected ones. LEXX isn't Buffy, and there are only a few well-respected fansites for the show. Why can't we have all of them?
• Of the links that the editor who disagrees with you would like to see on the page, the one that keeps getting kept is (IMHO) the least valuable. If I could only have two links, I'd keep the two that have been deleted and lose the one that has been kept (the fanclub link). But really, I see no reason not to keep all of the links in version [1], albeit with the SadGeezer link fixed as it is now.

Affiliate Marketing Link Info

Hey JFish. The Link was placed by me, yes. It's not a secret. The domain is my last name because it is my family's homepage and the same as my username here. Commercial Pages? Certainly. Commercial Site, I don't think so.

That a Steakhouse is full of meat and not of vegetarians is the nature of the beast.

I am doing doing the "meat eating" or affiliate marketing for years now. I see things like Affiliate programs a normal person would not notice. I also sign-up the affiliate program if they have one. Endorsement is not decided based on has program or not. Most important is the Value. If it is a valuable resource and it has no affiliate program, no affiliate link, if it does have one, sign-up and affiliate link replaces regular link, 2nd nature.

I pointed an issues with the article out. Further resources are missing. Wikipedia is general and has to follow WP:NPOV, but does not help newbies in the industry to find out the things they need to learn to do their job right and not getting fired.

The discussion what to add resulted in a no-consensus and only the link to Dmoz remained, But DMOZ is a Web Directory and not a Resource Site. It is limited in that sense. It's similar as for the SEO and SEM Articles that gets spammed every day at least once. The Affiliate marketing article is not that bad. We finally agreed on a very limited set of resources to point to.

I explain the issues with Dmoz and what it can not provide at the Talk:Affiliate Marketing Page. Please take the time and read it. Then revisit my site and check again. If somebody comes along and wants to add a link to the article it gets removed no matter what. Most of the time is it justified, but often is it actually a good resource. I watch that. Some of the removed links ended up on my Resource Page. I am around here and watch the Article and the other articles that are about the same topic. I also extended content, added new and corrected other.

That means, that I am not a "hit and run" kind of visit to WP. A "drive by" link injector. I got user:Deli nk convinced and seek dialog with the wikipedians that watch the AM article. For the SEO article was it also necessary to get everybody who is active and contributes to the article and watches it to agree on the links that stayed.
