Congratulations

...on half-shares in a good article!! cheers, Struway2 (talk) 20:37, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Re 1931, I'd be happy to take an interest, but my books have little to say on the subject. I heartily recommend the newspaper archives in Bham Central Library, they did me well enough for my share of 1956, but as I no longer live in the Bham area I only get anywhere near it when my lot have a midweek home game. Have converted the match details bit on 1931 to the format used on 1923 and 1956. The reason my players are already blue is that we had this strange concept called a stable team in the 1920s, that lot average way over 200 appearances each, so I created those that hadn't already been done when my player list went to FLC. The only one with less than 100 is Bob Gregg, and I created him so he wouldn't feel left out :-) cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:03, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
main problem with the format used on most of the cup final articles is that it breaches the MoS in about five different ways (flags, unnecessary small print, date formats, unlinked and/or unkeyed abbreviations for playing positions, whatever else) so for the featured articles, it had to go. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:21, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Adam Boyd

Hi, in regards to the above article, I almost always notify wikiprojects when I review their articles but this was some time ago and I may possibly have forgotten in this case. Sorry. If you'd like me to re-review the article, completed the suggested improvements, nominate it at GA and let me know and I'll do another GA review for you.--Jackyd101 (talk) 00:11, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

2000 Football League Second Division playoff final

Not a problem at all, go for it! -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 20:04, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Hangover

Nice! I can't even type after two pints now, never mind a hangover. I used to be able to work any day of the week with a hangover but alas no more - old age catching up with me I think. So I try not do too much on here with the slightest effect of alcohol.

No worries about the page moves. At some point, I intend to create our play-off final and I've got the redlink on my watchlist. Until the template was created I had about three or four different alternative page names on my watchlist, but at least now we have some consistency.

Hope your hangover vanishes soon. Hair of the dog has always been the best cure I found; unfortunately it's an expensive medicine these days. Peanut4 (talk) 14:14, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Yeah obviously there needs to be equal consistency regarding final, not just with FA Cup, but League Cup, World Cup, UEFA Cup, etc. I'm personally undecided on whether it should be a cap or not.
I'm guessing the hangover might be easing in the last hour? Well, so far. ;-). Peanut4 (talk) 15:54, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Shucks, cheers!

Yeah, I won't be going anywhere any time soon, goofing off on WP when I'm supposed to be working is the only thing keeping me sane at this place at the moment :-) -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 07:57, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

I'm not really that bothered I have just always heard the plural referred to as stadia. Skitzo (talk) 23:04, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Re: Gavin Peacock and Garth Crooks

No, not really. If every person who has worked for the BBC at some stage was part of WP:BBC the list would be endless (think of all the actors etc), and most of these people are already covered by other projects (football in these cases). Try to keep people limited to BBC staff, those involved in running the corporation such as Chairman, Directors-General etc. mattbr 22:45, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

That's OK, they're easy enough to remove! mattbr 10:02, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Jimmy Murphy's DOB

User:Struway2 mentioned in the discussion at WP:FOOTY (here) that his printed source gives Murphy's DOB as 8 August 1910. If your sources counter-indicate that, then fair enough. – PeeJay 21:13, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Yes, you're right. These parameters are deprecated, there's no sense to leave them in the list. Conscious (talk) 08:58, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Under-soil heating

"... the board's view over the past 16 years has been to put the purchase of better players ahead of the stadium and facilities. We probably have been too one-sided in that respect, and the counter-argument is that you have got to spend on undersoil heating, a track around the pitch, a big screen, a clock and making the hot water work to improve the whole experience for the fans." Making the cold water work every time one tried to use any would be nice, as well... Pity we were playing the dogheads; if the visitors had been travelling as far as I was, it might have been called off in time to turn round and get home while there was still some daytime left. hey-ho, Struway2 (talk) 16:36, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

It will be mentioned; I'm in the middle of rewriting it (the previous version being mostly copyvio of this which in turn is mostly copyvio of Matthews' Complete Record pp57-59) and have only the Structure and (lack of) facilities section to go. Interestingly, Premier League Rule I.14 says "Each Club shall provide and maintain at its registered ground an undersoil heating system or some other adequate system of pitch protection to the reasonable satisfaction of the [Premier League] Board which shall be operated to the extent necessary to procure, so far as is reasonably possible, that the pitch is playable on the occasion of each home League Match.", and that rule has been in place at least since season 2001-02, so one wonders what "adequate system" they had... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 18:35, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Scott Carson

Happy New Year, Jameboy! Very pleased to see that Scott Carson is now a GA. Well done. --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 21:35, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

York City

Thanks, but I think HaGamal's opnion could be related to the point made on how lower league football in Israel is barely recognised in their own country, whereas it plays an integral part here. And I see you've not made the trip to Villa today, but I suppose you're only in for a stuffing anyway ;) Mattythewhite (talk) 13:08, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Losing already. You're probably right, sadly. --Jameboy (talk) 13:11, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Bill Richardson

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I've disambiguated the York player to "(footballer born 1943)" and when this is created, it will probably be best for the West Brom player to be renamed "(footballer born 1908)". Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 13:44, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

1931

Seeing as my new ISP has finally arrived and is providing service for longer than 5 minutes at a time, I've added Birmingham's route to the final, first draft of, anyway. There's a redlinked John Townrow in there who deserves an article, being an England international, I'll try and get a stub done later. From Thursday we're away for a week, but after that I promise to put some work in on this. With all Blues' recent postponements there's bound to be a midweek game soon where I can fit in a visit to the library. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:39, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

See User:Foxhill/internet reference sites accessible with a valid UK Library card which will tell you whether your local library subscribes to the Times Digital Archive, and if so, how to access it. I would be interested in having a look at the B.Post articles: when I visit the library for research I always get distracted into reading the paper and get far less done than intended. At least this year's FA Cup is no longer a distraction and my lot can (hopefully, at any rate) concentrate on the league... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 23:00, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Match infoboxes

I rarely have strong feelings about templates and infoboxes, aside from a preference for keeping them quite short. I don't see why "weather" is a field in Infobox football match, for instance. I'd probably plump for the 1956 style, but I'm pretty sure it was chosen in that article because it was therer already rather than as a conscious editorial decision. hi. I need to opt out of signing as I forget... there is a big differance between strong and aggresive.. if you look at his phyisical stature youll see he was not a big strong boy.. he was aggresive and this was one of the first thing noticed in him as a youth.. he is widely known as an aggressive player...

His goal record is second-to-none, he's aggressive, he's a leader and no-one holds the ball up better than him. [[1]] or.. Remember this incident... sums up Shearer for me...

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=337283&root=extratime&cc=5739

Alan Shearer: Newcastle United - Leicester City, April 1998

Never afraid to put himself about a bit, Shearer has such a reputation and standing in the game
that critics often suggest he is let off too leniently when he does cross the line.

This unseemly incident would make a key piece of compelling evidence for their prosecution. The England captain had his shirt tugged by Neil Lennon as the two competed for a ball, they fell and then Shearer's boot made a close acquaintance with the prone Lennon's face as he got to his feet again.

Accident or design? The TV pictures looked pretty conclusive. Shearer, involved in the breaking of Ramos Vega's nose earlier in the season, had stamped on Lennon's face.

I think it is widely accepted that he was an aggressive player.

I can find some more links if you like.

Hi Jameboy. I am currently having a peer review on Oxford United F.C. before i take it to FAC and i would really value any suggestions you have towards improvement. Thanks, Eddie6705 (talk) 15:39, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

I will let you know when i take it to FAC. I will have a look over the West Brom article over the next few days and post any comments on the article talk page. Eddie6705 (talk) 22:14, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

1931 and all that

I've made a few notes, mostly on trivia surrounding the event, at User:Struway2/Sandbox#1931 cup final; anything in there without questionmarks is reliably sourced. I now have the Bham Mail match report, and a copy of this which contains the Daily Mail report, and access to The Times, so will have a go at some point at writing a Match summary section and put in the sandbox (or on the article itself?) and invite you to copyedit, add bits from your sources, change emphasis, rewrite entirely, do what you like to it. I might find it easier to get something done now the blasted transfer window's finally shut (except of course it isn't for loan signings for us lower division teams). Thanks for the subheadings for Muntz Street :-) cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:49, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Well, it was a good idea while it lasted. I've tried to write a match summary section, but find myself completely incapable of deciding which are the important-est bits to extract from the various published reports... Are you any good at match reports? perhaps I might do better at fleshing out someone else's work if it needed it. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 23:10, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
Your match report couldn't be worse than my attempts, believe me. The Times archive doesn't allow downloading of articles, but I could email their report to you as a screenshot. It appears one can't send attachments via Wikipedia email (can't imagine why :-)) but if you don't have a problem with my knowing your email addy, send me an email via Special:EmailUser/Struway2 and I should be able to reply to it with the match report attached. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:03, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Attendance:

  • 90,368: "The F.A. Cup". The Times. 27 April 1931. p. 12. The weather, which had been atrocious in the morning, cleared for a time while the vast crowd of 90,368 was gathering, but once play started it became worse than ever, the rain falling in torrents.
  • 92,406: Thraves, Andrew (ed.). The History of the Wembley FA Cup Final. Weidenfeld and Nicholson. p. 24. ISBN 978-0-297-83407-6.

Incidentally, the citation for the Times match report goes "The Cup. Victory Of West Bromwich, A Triumph Of Youth". The Times. 27 April 1931. p. 5. The author is "our special correspondent", if that needs including. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:38, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

I've added a very brief match summary - just the goals - on the basis a football match article without a mention of the match is fairly pointless :-) it'll do till we can cobble a half-decent one together. What I struggle with is things like: for Albion's second goal, a Blues defender tries to clear it and only succeeds in passing to Richardson. Matthews (1995) says it was Liddell, the Daily Mail in the Thraves book says Cringan, the Times says "one of the Birmingham defence", and the Birmingham Mail doesn't mention it at all, though as they're reporting for that evening's paper without the benefit of TV replays, they're allowed not to spot everything. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:15, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Template

It looks good, and I'd certainly support the use of a unified template. Bear in mind, though, that XXXX-YY in English football articles theoretically cover the whole of English football (as opposed to Premier League XXXX-YY and The Football League XXXX-YY), so while including major honours is fine, I wouldn't include promotion and relegation. You'd certainly have to include all four pro divisions and potentially below that too, so I'd be inclined to leave it out, otherwise the box would be huge..... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 07:28, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Not so tut, tut

Very nice assessment. Made me chuckle at least. Peanut4 (talk) 01:32, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

See alsos

I've wondered this before. My only two suggestions would be to either form a grid similar to the one at Football in England#Seasons in English football. Or perhaps we could add a sub-cat for English clubs on Category:Football (soccer) clubs 2007-08 season and then have one see also to the sub-cat. Any thoughts? Userbox for GA reviews

The userbox {{User Good Articles reviewed}} has been updated so that it can now link to a page in your user subspace where you keep track of all your GA reviews, if you have such a page. This can be done by adding a | and then the name of your user subpage (or subsection of your regular user page) wherever you have the template called. For example, on my user page I am using

{{User Good Articles reviewed|6|User:Rjanag/GA reviews}}

which displays as

This user has reviewed 6 Good Article nominations on Wikipedia.

There is more information on how to do this at Template:User Good Articles reviewed.

Note: If you are not interested in doing this, you don't have to do anything; the template will still work for you exactly as it does now.
