TheWikiWizard-June 2021

Hello, Interstellarity! Here is the June 2021 issue of TheWikiWizard.

Wikipedia News

  • The IRC channels used for Wikipedia have changed, you can read more on it here. While TWW was aware of this in the last issue, we decided to wait and publish this in this issue, when the issue is not as new any more, and more information has been developed.
  • There was quick interruption in editing on Wikipedia, that was to test server switching should an emergency happen, more details can be found here.

Humour

This section was written by CanadianOtaku --つがる Talk to つがる:) 🍁
  • Internet Explorer still thinks freenode is the best IRC service!
  • It has been proven that editing the article Cheese while eating Cheese is considered a WP:COI.
  • This joke has been donated to us from aliens, hopefully they learned UTF-8: £

Editor's Notes

  • Thanks for your patience as we experienced delays in publishing this issue.

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

  Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Requested move 25 July 2021

Please can you close this RM because there is overwhelming opposition and the action is untimely as pointed out by other editors. The requested move banner must be removed from the top of Olympic Games article while the Tokyo Olympics are still in progress.
As the move request proposer, you can close the move request as withdrawn if opposition is unanimous, per WP:RMCLOSE. If you feel strongly enough about this, you can always open another RM at a later date. Thanks, Rodney Baggins (talk) 09:43, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

@Rodney Baggins: I have left a note on the discussion that I withdraw the proposal that the discussion is to be closed. Thanks for letting me know. Interstellarity (talk) 22:51, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
You can close the RM yourself you know. A move request proposer may close their own move request but no-one else involved in the discussion can. See bottom of WP:RMCLOSE#Conflicts of interest. Follow guidance at WP:RMCLOSE#Step-by-step formal closing procedure. Thanks, Rodney Baggins (talk) 23:05, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
@Rodney Baggins: Thanks. I have closed the discussion. Interstellarity (talk) 23:22, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, that's very decent of you. I think there's a time limit before you can reopen the same RM but I expect you will be able to do that fairly soon and get another discussion going but you might be fighting a losing battle and changing the name of the Olympic Games article would probably have repercussions for many other related articles so it could open a can of worms. In the meantime, I'm fighting my own battle on the 2020 Summer Olympics article where I'm trying to set the language style to American English but User:Arorae seems to think we don't need a language template (which is ridiculous) and won't even discuss it with me. At the moment the style is all over the place, some words spelt English, some American, it's a right mess! Look out on the Talk page later if you're interested in commenting! Cheers, Rodney Baggins (talk) 10:00, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
Sorry to reply here, but I am not fighting with anyone, but Rodney Baggins does. There is no big mess on Tokyo 2020 that is an event not even halfway and where there is no proheminent language (we are not in the States but in Japan, and there are more English speakers outside the US than those writing American English. yours to everyone,--Arorae (talk) 13:33, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
