ANI section about shutting down Hazard-Bot over false positives

Please join the discussion on ANI about shutting down Hazard-Bot over the false positive tagging at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Hazard-Bot false positives flood. Aspects (talk) 07:45, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have blocked the bot (see discussion), no objection to you having it unblocked once it's been determined what went wrong. Lankiveil (speak to me) 08:51, 22 July 2013 (UTC).Reply
In case you've not seen, we've found that the problem is a serious database error — Special:WhatLinksHere is badly malfunctioning, so your bot quite reasonably thought that these images were orphaned. I don't think the bot should be unblocked until the database error is fixed, but developers have been alerted and are trying to figure out how to fix it, so the bot should be ready for unblocking before long. Nyttend (talk) 00:29, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Just an additional update, the bot is doing a cleanup run "where possible" (where the pages haven't been edited since the bot's edit).  Hazard-SJ  ✈  02:19, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Another false positive?

This image File:Fireworks Entertainment-logo.png is not orphaned although I see on the page it says it is not used on any article but is on Fireworks Entertainment. Am I missing something?? REVUpminster (talk) 08:03, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Same for File:Guías de México.png. --  Gadget850 talk 10:49, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
The fix is to make a null edit to the article where the image is used. --  Gadget850 talk 10:54, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, it worked somehow. REVUpminster (talk) 16:36, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

False Positive - Memory Lane

Received notification that the file http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Memory_Lane_%28Doctor_Who%29.jpg was not attached to any articles. However, it is attached to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_Lane_%28audio_drama%29. I've removed the flag. Eddie Robson (talk) 13:14, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

As noted above, the file usage on the file page is blank which causes the bot to flag the image as unused. To fix that, you need to do a null edit on the article, which I have done and the file page now shows it is used. --  Gadget850 talk 17:53, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Brother, Bring the Sun

What exactly happened here?

The only edit to Brother, Bring the Sun this year was this, and it has nothing to do with adding/removing the image from that page. I can only assume then that the image was not orphaned at the time of the message above... So why did Hazard-Bot flag it? Tom(2¢) 19:01, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Tring Brewery

Hi the image being used at Tring Brewery is legitimately being used as a non-free image. However when you click on the image and view the details it says it's an orphan and your bot has marked it for deletion as a result. What's going on? -- 86.150.164.174 (talk) 21:17, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Hazard-Bot 22

Hi Hazard-SJ, thanks again for taking the time to respond to my request and try to configure the Hazard-Bot to fulfill it. I see that you stumbled upon some formatting issues that stalled the project and I guess made it less easy to complete than it might originally seem. I understand there is a lot to do and the issues you encountered can be quite tricky, so I was wondering if I could help you in any way. Alternatively, would you want me to get you in touch with the more "technical" (I can't write a script for dear life) people over at Wikivoyage who were even thinking of doing something similar?

If you cared to reply, it would be brilliant if you could in my Talk Page over at Wikivoyage, as I tend to visit Wikipedia very rarely those days. Thanks in advance for that! PrinceGloria (talk) 07:53, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hazard-Bot making a mistake

Hazard-Bot posted this to my talk page. I didn't up load the photo. In fact, I didn't even touch the image until 4 years after it had been uploaded. I have virtually nothing to do with the image but for one edit done 2.5 years ago. Please fix your bot so the proper person is notified. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 02:15, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Of note; I reverted the edit that orphaned the image, but that is not what this is about. The bot needs to be looking for the original uploader if possible, which in this case was most emphatically not me nor even close (by 4 years distant). --Hammersoft (talk) 02:20, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Actually, it should not look for the original uploader, but rather, as it has been doing, the latest uploader (i.e., the original uploader might have nothing to do with the latest version), which, because of this, was identified by the MediaWiki software as being you.  Hazard-SJ  ✈  22:47, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Requesting your opinion on a photo

Hi. We really need your opinion on which of these photos would make the best Infobox portrait for the Rick Remender article. Could you please offer your opinion in that discussion? The most recent subsection of that discussion is here, so you can just chime in there if you don't want to read the whole thread. I really appreciate it. Thanks. Bot

Any eta on restarting your orphaned non-free tagging bot? Werieth (talk) 14:31, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure as yet, I'm actually on vacation going up to nearly the next two weeks, and don't have access to most of my scripts at the moment. Do you know if the database issue has been fixed? If it has not, it might be pointless to restart the job, as it gets a list of non-free files and from those, checks for file links to them to determine if they are orphaned, and in such a case, it would continue to get false positives. I even had started a rewrite of the script, and rather than depending on the list from the database report page, it would make the query directly from the replicated database, but at the time I tested the query, it was a similar list to what was on the on-wiki page. Other than the DBR bot sometimes skipping a few report updates periodically, leaving an outdated list for my bot (with the older script) to re-check, that script is quite fine AFAIK.  Hazard-SJ  ✈  15:00, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Greetings, glad to meet you.

I saw your listing on Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user/Adoptee's Area/Adopters and you have a couple things in particular that catch my attention: anti-vandalism and bot programming, and also the account creation interface.

I'm generally tech-savvy, but I'm a total Wikipedia newbie, and have recently had a bit of an experience as a new user. You can read the sad story, and the responses I got at the Teahouse, under the pointed question "Does Wikipedia REALLY want new users??"

Now that I see that yes, Wikipedia DOES want new users, but that you admit the current new user process is badly broken, I'm looking at ways I can help you build a NEW new user experience that better meets everyone's needs. I've been hashing some of those ideas on my user talk page, as well.

Certainly, I understand that vandalism is a problem, and that automated solutions (bots) have been, and are continuing to be created to address the problem. Unfortunately, sometimes those solutions get in the way of new users trying to genuinely learn how to contribute to Wikipedia. So, I'm really interested in learning all I can about what problems and solutions you have, and how the needs of anti-vandalism and new users can be perhaps balanced a little better.

I do have a number of users who've weighed in with comments and support, one of whom is actually directly involved in the software development of the underling software that runs Wikipedia. Your comments and feedback, I believe, would mesh well with the other feedback I'm getting. My goal is to get a better understanding of what's going on from all angles, and all groups that support or manage new users, the new user experience, and who clean up the mess that new users tend to leave behind, so that we can develop a balanced approach to problems that meets all party's needs.

Of course, being a newbie myself, I'd also like to learn more general Wikipedia stuff ... the markup, the policies, the nuts and bones of things to become a productive editor, myself.

Comments and feedback are most welcome. I'd be happy to work with you in whatever capacity you feel is most productive and comfortable. Thanks for your time and consideration.

Hazard-Bot Request

Howdy, your bot carried out a task for me last month and I was wondering whether I should request the same task with a slightly different message here or at WP:BOTREQ? Which would be more appropriate? Olegkagan (talk) 23:09, 12 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Since I have full approval for the task, you could ask me directly, though, I must say that I might not be able to start it within the next week, if it is urgent.  Hazard-SJ  ✈  03:33, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Anytime this week is fine. Here's the message: "Help build the Wikipedia community in Southern California at "Come Edit Wikipedia!" presented by the West Hollywood Library on Saturday, August 31st, 2013 from 1-5pm. Drop in for some lively editing and conversation! Plus, it's a library, so there are plenty of sources. --Olegkagan (talk)" To be sent to this list. Thanks! Bot malfunction

OK, thanks for the note, I've checked on that, and see no logged error, so what I've done now is to allow the task to run twice a day, so if the first run didn't start/complete for whatever reason, the second could hopefully have it sorted out.  Hazard SJ  02:43, 13 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Template sandbox reset

Hi, following up on my earlier request for the sandbox to replace the text with Template:Template sandbox reset. It seems user:AvicBot2 no longer edits, so could you do it now ? The same should probably be done for the sandbox itself and tutorial sandboxes with Template:Sandbox reset, but user:Lowercase sigmabot II is active there too, so I'll ask Σ. Thanks, Cenarium (talk) 23:36, 9 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free files

Hi, is there any reason Hazard-Bot isn't tagging orphaned non-free files anymore? If it's because Wikipedia:Database reports/Unused non-free files isn't being updated, I pinged MZMcBride about it. Cleaning of Template:Template sandbox

I have a question about the cleaning of Template:Template sandbox and others like Template:X1. It says in the documentation "the template sandboxes are automatically cleaned every 12 hours". However it seems to me that the "Hazard-Bot" does clean the template sandbox with a wait time of sometimes only a couple of minutes after an edit, which can result in much more frequent cleaning. (I would suspect that people trying to experiment with creating templates would find this quite irritating, to say the least.) On the other hand some of the other template-sandboxes that are referenced in the documentation (e.g. Template:X10) are however never cleaned. Maybe I misunderstood something here, but to me it seems the behaviour of Hazard-Bot is not correct. Kindest regards, Tony Mach (talk) 11:52, 7 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for noticing that, but that wouldn't be my fault (though I can fix it). Some time ago I had changed my bot to substitute {{Sandbox reset}} (see here), which I believe the community would prefer (Sigma should probably do the same too). A look at that template's source code showed that was where it was coming from, so per your request I've removed the tags from that template's source code to solve the issue.  Hazard SJ  01:57, 21 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
