re: wrongtitle

It's not really all that useful, and you could consider the removal of the excessive verbiage a cleanup :) --Joy [shallot] 23:06, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The analogy is okay, but it's flawed due to the context - we're not talking about code here, we're talking about organizing information in an encyclopedia entry. Small diacritical marks in the spelling of a name are not information that needs to be in front of everything else in the article - the most important thing about a person is what they did and why they may matter to the reader, now the fact that we can't spell their name exactly right. --Joy [shallot] 11:17, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

VSL "minor edit"

hi GregorB,

i would suggest that you might not check the "This is a minor edit" box when you are adding content to an article. i think "minor edits" are for correcting spelling, grammar, and typographical errors. some Wikipedians have an option on their Watchlist to not display minor edits (because they only want to know if there is a substantive change of content) and only registered wikipedians can check that box when they edit, so there's a little matter of trust there.

also, i might recommend checking out both the Duff and Duff, Okun, & Veneziano papers. i think there is a much more fundamental reason for why a change in  ,  ,  , and  , is not detectable by us mortals. a change in any dimensionful quantity, in and of itself, is not detectable except measured against another like dimensioned quantity.

best regards, r b-j 00:22, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi Rbj,
As far as I can tell, I've made two edits to the VSL article, both of them fairly minor, limited to spelling and formatting. I don't remember having changed (let alone added) the content, so I believe this is some kind of misunderstanding... GregorB 07:47, Apr 6, 2005 (UTC)
(Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Rbj")
okay, according to the diff function in the article history, it appeared that you added an entire section of content. so i did misunderstand, but i wonder how come it looks like that. r b-j 00:35, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Could you reconsider your delete vote? I've rewritten the article. RickK 05:22, May 29, 2005 (UTC)

As of 2005

I have a question about your recent edit of List of particles. Is there a general wikipedia policy of adding the words "as of 2005" to statements that are currently true, but could change? It seems a bit silly, in this case, because if any of the hypothetical particles were discovered, it would be big news and updated extremely quickly. -- SCZenz 21:16, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

It's even sillier in String Theory, as it seems to imply it's possible that it might be verified next year. The theoretical physicists I know all seem to be in agreement that testing a new theory of physics to the point where it's demonstrably string theory simply cannot be done in the forseeable future. But I guess it's not wrong... ;)

Thanks!

Thanks for your edits to Heim theory! I was delighted to see someone new come by and make a few edits. May I ask how you came across that page? --HappyCamper 22:17, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

Hi GregorB. Since you added the context tag to Oblique projection, you seem like the right person to ask whether the article has enough context now for that tag's removal. Does it still need more context or do you think it's OK now? The Rod 17:13, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

lowercase template

GregorB, I appreciate your switching of the Counter-Strike map articles (e.g. cs_italy) to the lowercase template, but lowercase is not the only problem with the title, nor is it the main one (They also require underscores). For now I'm going to revert them back to wrongtitle. Thanks. Varco 20:41, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Dinamo

Get involved in social nudity naming convention debates!

Hi GregorB,

I'd like to invite you to get involved in establishing consensus in discussions concerning naming conventions for social nudity topics.

Please join in this community discussion regarding the name of Portal:Clothes free.

Participate here: Portal_talk:Clothes_free#Votes

Please also join in the discussion about what to name an article dealing with social nudity. I believe the the latter term is a better term to use than naturism or nudism as it is more WP:NPOV and is in use currently. Formerly the article was titled Clothes free movement.

Participate here: Talk:Naturism#Move_to_Social_nudity

duplicates

Good eye.

You will have to forgive me. The two official lists spelled many of the detainees names differently. And the 121 "factors" favoring continued detention or release has yet a third spelling for some of those detainees. Dreadful when you consider that some of the detainees are being held because their names matched those on a list captured from another suspect. If they are going to hold someone because their name matches one from a suspect's list, the least they can do is spell their name right. -- Geo Swan 00:05, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

I was wondering if you thought that paintings by year might be too "fine". Maybe paintings by decade would be better? FYI Mega Society Judgement

As you may have heard the Mega Society article was deleted awhile ago, at the end of an acrimonious AfD/DRV process. There is a wide divergence between deletion policy (as defined by various policy guideline documents) and deletion practice, as implemented by admins (who claim to be following the "spirit" of the law). Consequently there are lessons to be learnt from the experience, which will not be obvious from reading the guidelines. Here are some tips for future conduct:

  • Single purpose users are frowned upon and were a frequent bone of contention during the AfD and DRV processes. So I urge you all to "establish" yourself as Wikipedians: create, edit and even ... delete articles! There are plenty of articles that need attention.
  • It is a very good idea to put something on your user page, (it doesn't matter what) to avoid showing up as redlinked users -- being redlinked will count against you in any debate.
  • When voting, include brief reasons which are grounded in policy (votes not backed by reasoning may be discounted; too much reasoning will be ignored).

Given the bias against soliciting (see judgement) I may not be able to contact you again, so I suggest you put the Mega Society in your watchlists.

The closing admin's comments on the Mega Society:

Within the argumentation of the debate, the most significant point raised by those who supported the article was that a new draft was available. The article is not protected, so this may be posted at any time and (assuming it is not substantially similiar to the older version) it will be judged anew on its merits. This is good news for you.
The bad news for you is that it is well-established practice within Wikipedia to ignore completely floods of newer, obviously "single-issue POV", contributors at all our deletion fora. I'm among the most "process-wonkish" of Wikipedians, believe me, and even process-wonks accept that these sorts of voters are completely discountable. Wikipedia is not a pure democracy; though consensus matters, the opinion of newcomers unfamiliar with policy is given very little weight. Your vote, that of Tim Shell, and that wjhonson were not discounted. The others supporting your view were. I promise you that it is almost always true that, within Wikipedia, any argument supported by a flood of new users will lose, no matter how many of the new users make their voices known. In the digital age, where sockpuppeting and meatpuppeting are as easy as posting to any message board, this is as it should be for the sake of encyclopedic integrity. It is a firm practice within Wikipedia, and it is what every policy and guideline mean to imply, however vaguely they may be worded. (I do agree that our policies, written by laypeople mostly, could do with a once-over from an attorney such as myself; however, most laypeople hate lawyers, so efforts to tighten wording are typically met with dissent.)
If your supporters were more familiar with Wikipedia, they would realize that, invariably, the most effective way to establish an article after it has been deleted in a close AfD is to rewrite it: make it "faster, better, stronger." This is, in fact, what you claim to have done with your draft. Good show. Best wishes, Xoloz 16:22, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

So the outcome was not entirely negative, although I was disappointed by the admin's rather cavalier approach evidenced by the response to my enquiry:

.... why did you discount the votes of, say, User:GregorB or User:Canon? They are not new users, nor did I solicit them. I presume by Tim Shell you mean Tim Smith? ...... --Michael C. Price talk 16:49, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

to which I received this rather off-hand reply:

User:GregorB offered a very brief comment not supported by policy. User:Canon did take the time to offer analysis at DRV, but he had been among the first voters at the AfD to offer a mere "Keep" without explanation; therefore, I assumed he had been solicited by someone. Best wishes, Xoloz 15:50, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

which didn't fill me with confidence about Wiki-"due process".

Anyway, my grumpiness aside, the Mega Society article, is presently under userfied open-development at User:MichaelCPrice/mega, and will reappear at some point, when (hopefully) some of the ill-feeling evidenced during the debate has cooled. I am very heartened by the article's continued development, and by the development of associated articles. Thanks for everyone's help!

Hi there.

Thanks for helping me to do the <!-- expansion details --> tag on this article. As you can see from the edit history, I was looking for that code, but forgot it and mistook it for the noinclude tags... I couldn't figure it out!

Just wondering why you removed the {{bio-stub}} tag? I believe that the film is biographical - Shane Jacobson, who plays Kenny in the film, is a plumber... or at least that's the impression I got from the film and the official web site.

Anyway, thanks for your help on the hide tags and I hope you can give me a hand with the article.

Talk:Boston Tea Party

Howdy, I noticed that you and I seem to post in one or two articles dealing with progressive issues in political science/sociology. There's currently a debate beginning in Boston Tea Party as to whether the article should include the category [2]. It meets definitions set in the articles Terrorism and Definition of terrorism, however, there are several self-proclaimed patriots who watch BTP who refuse to recognise the fact. The simple criteria for terrorism generally seem to be intimidation or destruction of property in order to change public policy or public opinion while a state of war has not yet been declared. Some users would rather use recent acts of terrorism as a yardstick, rather than using a firm definition, and hence lose their ability to discuss matters calmly. Would you be able to pop in to the Talk page and join in the discussion? Thanks much, samwaltz 05:28, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Re: Renaming

I apologize. It was an honest mistake, I had no intention of naming it *%. I was just changing Captain Underpants 2: The Attack of the Talking Toilets into its correct title, Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets. I just was didn't know how to delete the old one, so I named it a nonsensical title, *%. I knew that would haunt me, and again, I apologize.

And don't even say it. I couldn't just rename the old one, because a jerk changed the already correct title into an incorrect name, and something was wrong when I tried to change it back, so I used another method, taking it into a new article.

But, on the plus side, I changed all links I know leading to *% to be sent to the new page, which is here.

In conclusion, apology yada yada yada.

If you wanna send a reply, send a message to My talk page so I will know if you reply.

Help needed

Hi, I found you from Category:User sql-4 since I need some help in an SQL related subject. There is a wiki-project in the Greek Wikipedia (Βικιπαίδεια), to put interlanguage links in as many articles as possible called el:Βικιπαίδεια:Επιχείρηση Interwiki (wikiproject interwiki). I have found a page on pages without interwikis, here, however, it is not automatically updated. In fact it is about 9 months old. The person who made it, said he used SQL, but when he tried this time he got stuck (he is not sql-4, for sure). Could you please run a query for articles which do not have interwikis and save the result here? It would be a great help for our wikiproject. Many thanks in advance.--FocalPoint 15:18, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

History of the petroleum industry in Canada

Hi, Gregor. You did some of the work on my history of the petroleum industry in Canada entry. I have a further request, and I would appreciate your counsel and advice. You named my page based on the model history of the petroleum industry in North America. Now that my entry is nearing completion, I have had time to study the other entry. My strong recommendation is that it simply be removed from Wikipedia. I have explained why in a discussion page on the history of the petroleum industry in North America.
