One request: I would have liked to have know the article had been nominated prior to receiving notiification that it was already appearing in DYK. Here you removed my DYK about the Soviet invasion of Poland (1939) (bottom) but I don't see it reappering on DYK template, nor was I notified it was used (or rejected without a comment for some very unusual reasons?). Replaceable fair use

Unfree images (such as crown copyright) which are "replaceable" are not usable under our Fair Use guidelines. See WP:FU critera #1 and counter example #8 ("An image of a living person that merely shows what they look like ... would almost certainly not be acceptable as fair use"). This is irrelevant of whether a replacement currently exists or not. The reasoning behind this is that by using high quality unfree images, we discourage users from trying to source free ones. I wasn't referring to FUC#8, but the counter example for living people. Whether or not an image is being used decorative is usually down to context, so it should just be removed from the page, and if that was the only place it was being used, tagged as an orphan ({{subst:orfud}}). ed g2s • talk 16:33, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Editing Tittell Brune

I appreciate your interest in my article. After spending an entire day researching this very neglected lady, and hoping to bring in my Oz friends who I think also feel somewhat left out in the theatre department since we Yanks and Brits (I'm both) seem to dominate the entries, I hope you will not come in and decimate it. I have experienced Wikipedia users who seem to think that anything different from pure Encyclopedic defininitions, will strip articles down to factual statements, and load up with arcane Wikomanic formulae, usually abbreviated for fellow arcanites. I think the PTB (powers that be with oversight) are trying to make the site superior in its treatment of the arts. And I think they want articles to do with theatre and theatre bios to have some flesh on them, so they are at least "readable". At the moment, they are mostly a recitation of awards and credits and no context (boring). Which is another way of my saying, please don't touch it further, although I appreciate your turning a lower case to an upper case in the title. Tittell Bruno, AGAIN!

Unbelievable (see above). Sometimes you people drive me crazy, self-appointed arbiters without the common courtesy of discussing your concerns on a talk page first. You are a "rules enforcer" exhibiting the kind of ego and intelligence associated with the lowest class of policeman, when you do this. I've already addressed this with you.

If you had discussed it first, I would have enlightened your obvious ingnorance on the subject of celebrity actors, which Brune certainly was. You even deleted the link to [1] which is a scholarly writing on an Australian research site which helps to explain why this old actress nearly a hundred years old ends her life in a nunnery. So you don't care, in your NOT HUMBLE opinion that others may wish to read and wonder about this. At worst, you have the choice of placing a {{}} at the top, leading to a discussion. Well, since you chose not to do this, I think you are wrong and I am going to restore the links, and I suggest you change your ways, and IN MANY CASES take steps to talk it out with contributors rather than be confrontational. I got Ais523 to write a short piece of javascript using the Add LI link and Add tab helper functions. Once you've put it into your monobook.js file, it lets you filter out any articles under 3kb in Special:Newpages. Cuts out around 90% of the dross and makes it much easier to find potential noms. DYK on sōshi-kaimei

Just noticed - thanks for nominating sōshi-kaimei for DYK. Though, since it's not really clear whether it qualifies or not (since it's just a jawiki translation with a bit of expansion), I guess we could combine that with my later self-nom on Sakhalin Koreans, which is actually new content (except for 2 unsourced paragraphs split from Koryo-saram, which have since had sources added to them):

...that six decades after the end of Japanese colonialism, some Sakhalin Koreans are still stuck with the Japanese names they adopted under the Empire of Japan's sōshi-kaimei policy, due to the intransigence of Russian officials?

This wording also has the advantage that it avoids the never-ending controversy over how much compulsion was involved in the process of registering Japanese names (which always puts Japanese and Koreans at loggerheads). Tell me what you think. cab 06:53, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Pepe Marchena

Thanks a lot for your suggestion. Actually, the source I used didn't exactly say that he was the first to perform in a sound film: it just said he was the first actor-singer. Unfortunately, the source doesn't specify if it refers to the theatre or the cinema (could be any: personally I don't know any previous examples of flamenco actor-singer). As to the lack of sources in English (which is a real headache when writing about flamenco). There is another fact which could be interesting: he created a new flamenco style, the "colombiana". This is right in the intro, all sources mention it and, luckily, there is a source in English for that, so I've added a note and listed it in the sources (it was in the External Link) GemmaMS 19:32, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the help with the most recent DYK update, the shortened noms are very handy stocking-fillers. What's your opinion on the stockpile we seem to have built up in the suggestion box? I've still yet to come up with noms (short or otherwise) for Riley (motorcar), Master of the Parement, Hindu iconography, Baldwin, Archbishop of Trier, Belford Hendricks, Miserere (Josquin), National Equal Rights League and maybe Shore Tilbe Irwin + Partners. Well, firstly, I think we should spend more time reading BBC more often, as ITN seems to be dead and one less ITN entry seems to cost us on average perhaps 1.5 updates per template. Most of the time, there are only unremarkable cricket noms there, and I am saying that as a person who writes cricket articles. Aside from that, I think we should encourage all writers and updaters to test their mind at User:Tony1/How_to_satisfy_Criterion_1a:_redundancy_exercises - I did them the other day when trying to get Ian Thorpe to FA after Tony objected. Tony tells us that 10% of FAC content is redundant, so I'd figure it would be more for DYK articles. I think you should write the noms so that we have more choice. That would help raise standards across the board, so we get better articles. Unfortunately, we are very soft with the "interesting" criteria, as we don't police the articles well enough for "hooks". User:Lar is not doing updates anymore, but perhaps I can ask him to do some reviewing as it takes less time. He was good at hook-policing. The other problem is that most of us updaters seem to be away on weekends. We need to fix that. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:50, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

DYK vandalism?

Although you may already know this, some people are using DYK as a guide as to which articles to mess with. Two DYK articles were changed to create significant ambiguity while the articles appeared on DYK. (Name change and vital information removed). Perhaps you can have an administrator assigned to watch over DYK articles while they appear on DYK.-- Jreferee 16:01, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Middle Dodd

Thanks for the picture, but unfortunately it only has the very bottom of Middle Dodd on it. Had a look on geograph and noticed that the 3910 square has a much nicer shot of Middle Dodd, but wouldn't have a clue how to upload it to commons and all that. Hope you don't think I'm being awkward, but is there any chance you could swap it? As you can see we're slowly plugging through the Wainwrights and alot of them are short of piccies, so please don't let my pedantry put you off.Bobble Hat 22:40, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
