A while back (maybe 10 days ago, as I clicked on Wikipedia (even before logging in), I got a strange message which appeared on my computer screen -- as if by magic. It was highly critical of my input (although not necessarily my most recent stuff). In my innocence regarding your procedures, I did not record the date of the message and I did not then know how to reply (by clicking on the Editor's name page) and I cannot locate/identify the author of the message as a Host in the Teahouse. How do I locate an Editor named Adam? Franklin Paladin (talk) 09:07, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

As you got this message before logging in, don't worry about it - it will have been addressed to someone else. Many Internet Service Providers use dynamic IP allocation - each time you connect to the internet, you are allocated a different IP. Someone else using that IP vandalised and so a message was sent to it, and when you happened to be allocated that IP later you got the message. That happens to me occasionally. As long as you always log in before editing, you need only be concerned with messages you get while logged in. JohnCD (talk) 09:28, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks JohnCD for your quick answer and I am relieved that the message was for somebody else ! Question: How can I "clear" (delete)this page of all the old data so that I can "edit" here without scrolling down a whole meter ? Franklin Paladin (talk) 20:55, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

With a very few exceptions (explained at WP:BLANKING - mainly declined unblock requests) you can blank anything you like from from your talk page. If it was a message or a warning, that is taken as showing that you have read it. However, it is preferable to archive old messages: see Help:Archiving a talk page for details. There are several "bots" - automatic systems - which can be set up to do that for you. I use User:MiszaBot III, which has instructions and a FAQ linked from the bottom of its user page. You're trying to add a reference, but you need to read WP:CITE. The way you did not not just looks odd, but will be worse if someone adds another citation. You can get more help with this at the WP:Help desk where hopefully someone can give you detailed instructions. Dougweller (talk) 15:11, 21 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
