Request for Assistance

Hi there, I'm pretty new here... like 2 days old :) Primarily, I'm reverting vandalism and nonsense, and I've come across a tricky situation where I don't really want to stuff it up. The article for Garlic has had some section blanking done to it, and I've left some messages and had a short discussion on the user in questions Talk Page, though I'm concerned I'm doing something wrong. Why did you ban my school IP?

In general, I think it's much better to contribute content to the articles than to simply add external links. It sounds like you're interested in doing just that. I'd recommend starting with what you know and taking a look at articles that you find interest in and seeing if there is anything that can be improved (and, to be honest, most articles around here need quite a bit of improvement.) You can also look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory/Science and see if there is a WikiProject community you might like to join. Thanks for the clean up. I do want to point out that Green Chemistry refers to the concept, rather than the journal. Also, the term used in the paper I cited was "high temperature water" which they abbreviated HTW, rather than being any generic hot water. --Rifleman 82 17:22, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

The changes I made were to reflect the fact that on Wikipedia Green Chemistry and green chemistry are different articles - the first is the journal, the second is the scientific discipline. Both of which have the proper capitalization the way they are (right?). Also, I've gone back and undone the splitting of the concept "high temperature water" in chalcone. I'm not sure if the user above represents Homestead High School or not, though it is one of the school IPs you've blocked: 205.173.47.254. As a student at HHS, I was going to make a similar request to unblock, but honestly, after looking at the warnings and the inane vandalism that our student body has perpetrated, I think it is a good thing that that IP has been blocked. Hi, Ed. I'm not asking why you blocked the IP of my school (207.73.105.250), I'm just saying I understand, and I apologize for the stupidity of some, which affects the freedom of the rest. It really is quite embarassing when the majority of the talk page for your school's IP is reprimands for vandalism. In fact, almost all of it is. So, I just wanted to say I'm sorry the immature people from my school have made so much trouble for the wikipedia community in general. Thanks; D_Lord_Strife.

From what I can tell, the talk page for the IP address of every school in the US, Canada, and the UK is filled with vandalism warnings, so your school is nothing different. I always place blocks on shared IP addresses that block anonymous users only and allow creation of new accounts. Special:Chemicalsources

Hi! I just decided to spam some people directly, who I know are very active on chemicals. There is now a wiki running on http://chemistry.poolspares.com (a site created by Nickj from the wikimedia IRC channel, the site will be taken offline again in a couple of weeks), where I have now hosted a small wikipedia. It runs two extensions I have written to the wikipedia software, a special page (for chemical sources, see also wikipedia:chemical sources and a chemform tag (for easy input of chemical formulae). Could you have a look, and comment on it (if useful I would like to try to let Tim or Brion enable it on wikipedia, though I feel some resistance there). Removing warning tags

Hi Edgar, nwe (talk · contribs) removed his 3RR warning from his talk page here [1]. I reverted it because I believe that users cannot do this and that, as I recall, policy says that it is technically vandalism to remove a warning tag. I cannot find that policy right now, however. Is that still the case? I think that it's odd that editors would be allowed to remove warnings from their talk page particularly when they're still violating the warning. --Strothra 15:40, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

If I recall correctly, there is no definite policy regarding the removal of warnings on one's own talk page. Many admins consider it a bad idea, but the prevailing attitude seems to be that people can control what is on their own talk page. Removing the warning is an acknowledgement that they have seen the warning. My opinion is that it's not worth fighting over. If administrative action is ever taken against that user, the fact that they've been removing warnings will be considered and will probably count against them. For now, my advice to leave it alone, and report any additional 3RR violations, vandalism, incivility, etc. on the appropriate admin pages. Hope this helps. Hi, I saw this edit due to the title of the post of Strothra, but Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace has a whole set of warning templates for reverting warnings on ones own talk page. I use ChemDraw to make the 2D images. ChemDraw is commerical software without any free versions (as far as I know), but you may have access to it at a school computer because it is by far the most popular chemistry drawing program. There are probably other free software packages out there too (ISIS/Draw has free version if I remember correctly). And I use Accelrys Visualizer to make the 3D images. There is a free version of this software available. You can also check out this nice writeup that Benjah-bmm27 (talk · contribs) has: User:Benjah-bmm27/MakingMolecules. Hope this helps. Deletion summaries

Hi, I have noticed that you often provide only a very short abbreviated deletion summary when you delete pages (like "a7" "nn-bio" and similar). Please keep in mind that most users do not know all of Wikipedia's speedy deletion criteria by heart. Please consider providing a brief "plain English" explanation without relying exclusively on "CSD jargon". Additionally linking to the relevant criteria so people can read it in full can also be useful, for example [[WP:CSD#A7]]. This will help a "layperson" better understand why something was deleted when looking at the deletion log.

Most browsers have a autocomplete or other "form filling" features that allow pre-prepared boil plate texts to be inserted into web forms with just a few keystrokes. This is useful for inserting detailed deletion summaries without having to type out the same things over and over. Please consider looking into it. Image on En Wiki and Wiki Commons

Dear Edgar181

I have upload the following images to English Wiki and Wiki commons:

• Simple_distillation_apparatus.png
• Sublimation_apparatus.png

I want to keep the Wiki commons image as the source of the image, and delete the local English Wiki hosted image. The reason being that, if I decide to update this image, I only have to upload it once.

Would it be possible for you to delete the local image on English Wiki?

I presume that English Wiki will then use the Wiki commons image as the new source of the image?

To tell you the truth, I was a wonderful contributor to articles in Wikipedia "Yu-Gi-OH and Pokemon". The story began when a user named Mitsumasa began creating and upload Pokemon images and articles.

After about 5 months after the start of the articles the PCP began merging the articles (A Man in Black, Ryulong, Interrobamf) i tried talking to them, and the PCP but they did'nt listen. I even tried to leave a committ on their usertalk pages but A Man in Black is the only one that responds to my committ. I gave up until recently students at my school "The Learning Community School" began bullying me, they knew that I was a contributor at the site "Wikipedia", so they told my teacher that they logged in some accounts and began vandalizing the articles that I personattly was currently having problems with you. Shiny new buttons

Two weeks ago I couldn't even spell administratur and now I are one (in no small part thanks to your support). Now that I checked out those new buttons I realize that I can unleash mutant monsters on unsuspecting articles or summon batteries of laser guns in their defense. The move button has now acquired special powers, and there's even a feature to roll back time. With such awesome new powers at my fingertips I will try to tread lightly to avoid causing irreversible damage and getting into any wheel wars. Why not omega minus 3?

I notice you reverted User:137.131.130.84's edit in Omega-3 fatty acid from "omega minus 3" back to "omega-3". I looked at the the Nomenclature section of Essential fatty acid and decided that the "omega minus 3" was an improvement in this context (explaining what omega-3 means), although in most contexts the shorter "omega-3" is better. Hmmm. I haven't seen or heard nomenclature such as "omega minus three" in place of "omega three" in a scientific context. Blocked again for nothing

Edgar you keep blocking me for vandalism. I've only posted twice. The first time I posted in the wrong section (ok that I understand), the second time I got blocked for posting a comment about a firearm on a DISCUSSIONS page. Since I'm new, perhaps if I posted incorrectly somewhere you could tell me about it, rather than continually blocking me. I've also been blocked a few times when I hadn't posted anything at all, logging on to check new messages to see I've been temporarily blocked without explanation. This has happened 5 times or so. Nobody shares this computer or this IP address so I'm not going to take that as an excuse. If you hold some kind of grudge then lets talk about it, rather than having it drag on and on while you block anything, everything, and for nothing because of something else that's bothering you. 70.112.133.120

If you check your block log,[2] you'll see that your IP address has only been blocked once. That was on Nov. 6 and you were not blocked for nothing. You were repeatedly adding the same thing to the plutonium article, despite being reverted at least five times by different editors and despite being warned to stop. I blocked your IP address appropriately and according to Wikipedia policy. That block was for only 31 hours and expired weeks ago. If you believe that you have been blocked 5 times or more, you are either mistaken or you are using multiple IP addresses and you'll have to tell me what those addresses are for me to investigate other blocks. I have no grudge against you and as far as I can tell my only interaction with you has been to apply that one block. --Ed (Edgar181) 14:24, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

As far as I'm aware, categories can't be easily renamed like articles can. If you just created a new category, chances are it's not being used yet, or not being used by many articles. In this case, it's probably easiest to just create a new category with the name you would like to change it to, then switch the category for each article. The misnamed category can then be deleted by request by any administrator (I'd be happy to do it, just let me know.) If there are many articles with the category you want renamed it's more difficult and should only occur with discussion and consensus which should take place at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. Wikipedia has specific criteria for inclusion of articles about bands. Please see Wikipedia:Notability (music). The article I deleted was a single sentence and included little more than a statement that Dick Punch is a band from NJ, plus a link to a myspace page. The article was marked for speedy deletion by another editor under criteria A7 (see WP:CSD#A7). I agreed and deleted it. If you feel the band really does meet the notability criteria, you can rewrite the article adding info about album releases on major labels, national media attention, etc. and it will probably be kept. --Ed (Edgar181) 11:11, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Deleted Article - AGHOST (acronym)

Hey Edgar,

I saw that the article about "AGHOST" was deleted without any sort of review. I'm a bit new here so I'm still reading up on the processes. It seems it was deleted due to "Unremarkable people, groups, companies and web content...", I actually disagree with this assumption and ask you to reconsider your decision. The group AGHOST has been around for five years, has had hundreds of members pass through, and is currently a non-profit paranormal research organization - which is somewhat uncommon these days. You're welcome to take a look at the media page on the group's website: http://www.aghost.us/106.html, which perhaps could give you an idea of the impact the group has had. If there were portions of the (albeit short) article that were inappropriate, please remember that I am a bit of a newbie and I'd be more than happy to remedy the problems if you'll let me know what was done wrong.

If you haven't seen it already, Wikipedia has guidelines for inclusion of articles about organizations. See Wikipedia:Notability (organizations). The article was marked for speedy deletion by another editor under criteria A7 (see WP:CSD#A7). I agreed and deleted it. Taking a second look, particularly in light of the link to media coverage you note above, AGHOST may meet the criteria so I'll undelete the article for you. I'd recommend adding links to media coverage directly to the article rather than just linking the list on AGHOST's webpage. Also, I think others will the view the article as self-promotional because of the many links to the organization's webpages, so just a few self-links in the external links section is probably enough. I don't know if this will be enough to satify other editors' opinions about notability, and I suspect that it will be at least questioned again. My article 'Woo Kwok Hing' was deleted by you, with reason sited being copyright violation. I do not see this as a valid reason. All info in the article is public knowledge about a public person, and even the person's bio, though already paraphrased, is info taken from the person's 'official bio' from the government website. Parts of the article were clearly copied word-for-word from the indicated website, which is not permitted. But that can be easily corrected. The article was also marked for speedy deletion as a biography of a non-notable person, but I think this is a borderline case. Please review the criteria listed at WP:BIO. Also, based on the similarity of your username to the subject of the article, I'd like to ask that you read WP:COI as well. If you're willing to edit the article to make sure there is no copyright infringement, and you're confident that the subject meets WP:BIO, and there is no conflict of interest at play here, let me know and I'll undelete the article for you. The article I deleted didn't have any statement that asserted the notability of Doug Cutting, which is why it met criteria A7. I don't believe there was anything improper about the deletion. However, if what you say is true, it sounds like an article that meets Wikipedia's guidelines for inclusion of biographies can be readily created. I certainly wouldn't automatically "respond-by-delete". I was in process of calling for admin support to block this crew who seem to have slipped notice other than warnings for quite some time (cleverly removing their warnings over and over). I looked at their history and saw what they had done several times and pulled the last intact series of warnings (to which they had edited to a simple "we are good"). What you did was perfectly fine. You may find it easier to use the standard warning templates found here: Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace. Like Hallmark cards, there's one for every occassion. If you don't mind me jumping into this discussion, we haven't really discussed the importance rating on chemicals yet. It is, as Ed says, very subjective. The table is:

Top	Subject is a must-have for a print encyclopaedia
High	Subject contributes a depth of knowledge
Mid	Subject fills in more minor details
Low	Subject is mainly of specialist interest.

Must have, I think I would judge things like hydrochloric acid, acetone, aspirin in that. Those are chemicals that people really encounter directly in real life. High class are things like diethyl malonate, a common building block in organic synthesis, has a reasonable impact in chemistry, but not important enough to see in high class, the common public does not see this. Low class are some specialistic things, maybe something like lead(II) chloride, used as an oxidiser in some inorganic (and organic?) reactions, but nothing really more than 'just another lead salt'. The rest is then 'Mid-class'.

I would put the majority of the flame retardands into mid, I guess. Flame retardant itself should have a {{chemistry}}, and there that compound should have at least a high. Hope this gives a bit of feeling for the system, though we have not discussed this yet in wikipedia:wikiproject Chemicals, Wim van Dorst is the most active in these classifications, together with Walkerma (the latter also because of CD-versions of wikipedia). My main target at the moment is to get at least the {{chemicals}} on the talkpages of as many chemicals as possible (Betacommands Bot is going to help, there) Hope this helps. --Dirk Beetstra ^{T C} 11:36, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Certainly it works like this. But it should be in brackets, as S2 is not similar to (S2). In the Official Journal of the European Union (search for "2634-33-5"), the S-phrases given are S: (2-)24-26-37/39-61. I think you will find that it is only ever {{S2}} which is in brackets, "Keep out of reach of children". The reason is that it applies to all hazardous chemicals, but only when they are sold for domestic purposes. I will see if I can dig out the directive to confirm that, but this was always my understanding. As such, we don't usually include {{S2}} in the chemboxes, although the template is there for completeness. I can certainly understand your frustration with vandalism - especially on a senstive topic such Auschwitz. You may be surprised to know that the amount and type of vandalism from that IP address is quite mild compared to much of what comes from other school IPs. That IP was only blocked twice before I blocked it for a week yesterday - and compared to many other admins, I tend to give longer blocks. I have blocked many IPs for 6 months, but usually after more than just 2 prior blocks. Loads of petty vandalism is the price Wikipedia pays for its "anyone can edit" policies. If it was entirely up to me to set Wikipedia blocking procedures, I would be much less lenient with repeated vandalism. This was ample time for you to apply an {{hangon}} tag and expand the article. You did nothing. So do not complain that the article was deleted. I don't believe I did anything inappropriate. The article was devoid of any content whatsoever - it was subject headings - and deletion of an article such as this completely within the bounds of Wikipedia policies. I encounter these types of empty articles all the time at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion. If the empty articles don't get deleted, they will clutter up Wikipedia rather quickly. I apologize that you weren't warned. Sometimes Wikipedia can be come across as impersonal (especially to newcomers). You are welcome to edit chemistry articles all you like, within the bounds of Wikipedia policies, we could certainly use the help - and I will continue to edit sailing articles and any other articles, particularly where my administrator rights/duties can be helpful. Thanks for the explanation. Obviously a misunderstanding. You can certainly undelete it but I won't be able to add to it until this evening.

RHaworth is -- ?? --, who? I can guarantee he's not "competent" to do "whatever Fritz Fenger did." That's just silly. Will he build a rudderless sailing canoe and sail from the southern Caribbean to the Virgin Islands in it? Let me know when the project starts; I'm a professional journalist and I'll be there to document it. Etc., etc.

See [this]. Before Wikipedia ever existed, I created a whole set of difficult-to-find e-books -- illustrated -- online covering canoe sailing ca 1860-1950. I know a little about the topic. I had hoped to contribute basic articles for Wikipedia including links to the e-books.

Nothing personal. Just exasperation at being thwarted in my attempt to do a good deed.

As for {{hangon}} I have no idea what that is but I will go look. In fact I have been a Wiki contributor who has always added valuable content in the past. My aggravation is with the apparent contest among those like Stephenchou0722 to win some sort of prize for sheer speed and mass of flags and deletions. It makes a contributor's task harder, not easier, no matter what policy may be used to justify it.

As for two whole hours, some of us have other demands on our time. Those who don't realize that are hurting, not helping, the community idea the project represents. If there are people who want to be speed-janitors for spam, give them some improved guidelines. Next time I'll go use whichever tag says "keep your cotton-pickin hands off for 24 hours, suh."

*1* I am very sorry, that must have caused some confusion. What I meant to say was "as competent as Edgar181 to do what Edgar181 did". Ie. I don't need to know one end of a boat from the other to delete an empty article. For future reference Dadadata please note that we never sign articles in the (Main) namespace but we always sign comments on talk pages. We will never get rid of trigger-happy people who attack articles within minutes of their creation (I have done it myself) so always create a new article in a personal sandbox (eg. user:Dadadata/sandbox) until it is of a viable size. -- RHaworth 18:36, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

I blocked that IP address on Jan 8 for a period of two months because of repeated vandalism from anonymous editors using that IP - as you can see here. It has been blocked many times in the past, so longer blocks are completely appropriate in the case. This block is annonymous only, so it should not affect users who log in. And it shouldn't affect the ability to read Wikipedia articles for users who are not logged in. Your block on User:Don't Rain on my Burrito

I've been following this user's block becuase I received a collateral IP block because of it. I noticed that you blocked this user for one time vandalism on Elephant. You gave the user an indef block. I also noticed that this is a relatively new user and you issued the block with no warnings given, and no notice to the user why he was blocked. FYI, I have removed autoblock so that Malber won't keep getting autoblocked every time he logs in and I have reduced the block length to 48 hours, based on this not appearing to be a vandalism-only account. Please feel free to take any action you feel to be appropriate, from reinstating the indef to removing the block completely ... but if you do modify the block, please make sure to do so without autoblock. Malber, I apologize that you got caught up in the autoblock. I don't normally issue a block for one time vandalism. However, I have noticed that other admins regularly do so for vandals that make Colbert-inspired edits to elephant, reality, and related articles. I have chosen to follow suit. Don't Rain on my Burrito (talk · contribs) made just such an edit. I fully support BigT's removal of the autoblock. And since the user has asked politely to be unblocked with a promise of good behavior (uncharacteristic of someone whose only interest in Wikipedia is the current Colbert vandalism fad), I won't object to BigT's reduction of the block on the username. --Ed (Edgar181) 18:16, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Spambot

Just as a note, the IP you just blocked for six months is part of a huge IP range, 89.20.97.0/24, used by a spambot. I've blocked the range for 24 hours until I can get Shadowbot in working order to counter the spam. Shadow1 (talk) 21:15, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Chemical structures

Hey, I work with the Graphic Lab, where we vectorizing images (among other tasks), and we have come across some of the chemical structures you have done, that were saved as PNG's. Would it be possible that you still have the original files, which you (or we could) save out as SVG's; this would save us from having to redraw all of them. Thanks for your interest in the chemical structures, but I don't think I understand your question about the original files. The files that I upload are identical to the ones that I save on my computer. In any case, I don't keep them for long, so I only have a few of the most recent ones. I have looked into creating SVGs, but unfortunately with the software that is available to me, it's not all that easy to do - in general it doesn't seem worth my effort. Also, I'm not entirely pleased with the results. The SVGs ended up with minor discrpenacies that I find a bit awkward. Good afternoon from Guernsey. My title is Editor Elizabethan and I have received notice that I am blocked by you for vandalism. I am a gentle lady of a certain age with no history of smashing windows or wrecking telephone boxes. From time to time, I consider it expedient as I go about my business patrolling cyber-space to remove some of the sillier comments placed on this medium by some of the pupils here who are less able to amuse themselves than others. If I have offended you in any way, this I regret, but I cannot see how I have. Would welcome your answer.

I have not blocked you, User:Editor Elizabethan, nor has anyone else. You are free to edit. And I never block people for offending me - only for violating Wikipedia's policies. Can you be more specific about the circumstances in which you saw a message that you were blocked? Were you editing using another username? Were you editing without being logged in?
