November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
 • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
 • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
 • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
 • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
 • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
 • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Template:TheWire

Could you have a look at Template:TheWire if you get a chance. Andre Levine suggested sprucing it up so that the lines for each group of characters appear in a different colour. Based on your work on the episode list I thought you might know how to do this. Also if you have any thoughts on which characters should be in the template I'd love to hear them.--Opark 77 22:55, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Username

Hi! I noted on the Vandal proof userpage list that you are down under a category with a lower case 'e', even though your Username starts with a capital 'E'. So I took a look at your user page and noted your categories and voting templates all have a lowercase 'e', Should those not be capitalised with an upper case 'E', as all the categories will have you listed incorrectly? Richard Harvey 11:24, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

(Copied from my Talk page for continuity)

Hi, and thanks for trying to help me out?

Are you saying that all my categories should list me with a capital E? I tried to create a username with a lowercase e, but the MediaWiki software automatically changed it to uppercase. Thanks! east.718 02:53, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi! Although its easy to change the appearance of your username in signatures using east718 to show:- east718 with a correct link back to your userpage, categories work with your actual username, changes to the template will throw your name to the end of the lists. The general idea of User Category lists is for Users to group themselves together, alphabetically, as a quick reference locator for the users in that particular category. You should therefore be listed together with all other users whose name starts with 'E'. If you take a look at your category lists, such as:- Category:Wikipedians_who_use_VandalProof You will see you are all alone, by yourself, without anyone with you, so to speak, at the end of the list. rather than being listed with the other 10 fellow patrollers whose name also starts with 'E'. Its not a big deal, but it may mean you get missed out of anything that is happening relating to your particular alphabetical grouping, especially if there is a private party only for 'New York Wikipedians' whose name starts with 'E'. So rather than have ' east718 ' in each of your categories use PAGENAME IE: from this;- to this:- . The Wire-Kudos plus transmitting data to you.

Kudos galore for your hard work on Wikipedia, especially on my new favorite show, The Wire. I am a huge Wikipedia fan. Rather than ask you to work on missing synopsis for some of season's four episodes, I should probably make some contributions to Wikipedia through you. I am not skilled enough (yet) to strike out on my own. If I wanted to transmit to you information (data) on some of the episodes for later use, how would I do it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bosundave (talkcontribs) east.718 20:32, 15 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

List of The Wire episodes

Hi East hope you are enjoying the wikibreak. If you do happen to be online and noting all your past help with List of The Wire episodes I wonder if you have an opinion about the use of screenshots in this article and would welcome your opinion here if you have time.--Opark 77 22:47, 27 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

RE:

My point in reverting the edit waring IP's edits was simple, even though it's logical and to some extent obvious that it will happen, adding the information to the article before it's actually updated might infringe no original research and Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. So basically we may need to be more prudent before editing that, I will revert it under this point, Peace. - 05:22, 6 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

No biggie, I wasn't offended by anything, you have the right to diagree with anyone. And you did the correct step by leaving me a message to resolve it, Peace. - 05:36, 6 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your request for speedy deletion of John C. Metzler (may 10, 2007)

Hi! You tagged John C. Metzler for speedy deletion on May 10, 2007 because of patent nonsense. I fixed the page so it wasn't a lot of edit lingo nonsense. I'm not sure if you have to remove your request to delete or not. When I edited it, I accidentally removed your tag.

Thanks!

Fair use rationale for Image:L_fb820846bcec192296b10ae072646e0f.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:L_fb820846bcec192296b10ae072646e0f.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MER-C 10:25, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I missed your message this morning, oops. Well, start by having a look at Wikipedia:Resolving disputes and see if that helps. If not, you can come talk to me more and I may be able to make some suggestions. Heimstern Läufer (talk) 06:50, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good Faith

About this diff — what do you mean by good faith? Perhaps I'm being overly cynical, but it is quite POV and also contentious. It's not a crticism [of you], and probably more an indication of my very low tolerance of nonsense and my slight scepticism of WP:AGF — so it's useful to get another perspective, as we are a community after all. Thanks!

OK — they did go on to "vandalise" another page, although really only adding silly comments

Re: Ray Ahipene-Mercer

Hi There. I wanted to know if you thought progress had been made on improving the Ray Ahipene-Mercer item you proposed for deletion. Thanks to a bit of help from people who know what they are doing, I don't think it is looking too bad. Projectbob 11:38, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

re: scott fivelson

Hello there. I believe I have made considerable progress to adding credibility to Scott's page including adding references. Would you care to reconsider your review of his page that you marked for deletion? I would happy to email you any PDF of his past articles in the Los Angeles Times, or Chicago Times, ... that you would care to see.

Thanks,

Non-free use disputed for Image:Susumu35.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Susumu35.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Yamla 20:44, 24 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, the replacement image (Image:Susumu35.png) also fails WP:FU. Please see the image page for more information. --Yamla 15:13, 25 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Which other image did you find? And I hope no hard feelings about my reversion of your removal of the dfu tag.  :) --Yamla 03:04, 30 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, this talk page cannot and will not be left as is. I didn't remove it because a couple of people disagreed with me. Talk pages are for contributing and improving the article. If this is something OFFICE wants to handle (and they won't) they can take this elsewhere. I removed it secondly because it was divulging IP addresses which goes against our privacy policy. Thank you! — Moe ε 06:43, 26 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Not only that, they were asking CheckUsers to be performed so earlier edits than his assumed "death time" could be investigated into. Why open that can of worms on the talk page? Why not at OFFICE, or the admin's noticeboard at least? Both will still answer the same "Leave it to the police". — Moe ε 06:52, 26 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ok, but the way I handeled it doesn't mean the first course of action is to revert. I'll try to be more polite next time, if thats anything. — Moe ε 06:58, 26 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

MMA Fair images -> Free images

Thanks for your recent replacements! Sancho 15:42, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hmm... other sources of free images hey? Does the Creative Commons search pick up flickr material? I find Flickr to be a good source of images. Even material that isn't marked as being licenced properly can be a good source if you send the copyright holder a request. I just use one of the messages at Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission and I've only had one person turn me down. These also work for material found out around the internet... I've had success there too. One thing I still haven't figured out is how to know for sure that the person that I'm talking to actually has the ability to release the material under the CC SA 2.5 or GFDL, even if they agree to. On Flickr, it's pretty clear, but with personal websites and the like, you can only go by trust. Sancho 17:42, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
