A few notes edit

I've responded to you question about adding articles about parks on the Toronto talk page. In short, go for it, and I'll give you a hand when needed.

Second, please be aware of Wikipedia's guideline about user pages (see point 7); your current page is much too promotional in nature. You're welcome to retain a link and a very brief comment about the business, but your user page should primarily reflect your activities on Wikipedia, not outside of it. (And besides, the link leads to a page which provides that info anyway.)

To obey Wikipedia rules I have to rewrite this page(User:DreamGYM). Would it be better if I rewrite this content according to top-level page rules; wait for your comment that it is OK and repost the content as a top-level page. Several points for you: first, you can (and should at this point) replace your user page with a brief comment as I indicated above. Wikipedia preserves all historical versions, so you can bookmark the current version using the "permanent link" feature in the toolbox section of the menu at left, and restore it if and when it can be moved to the article space. Otherwise, at some point in time, another administrator may happen upon your user page and delete it outright per our policies and guidelines (in that case the history will still be there, it just won't be viewable).
If you try to move it to the article space, it'll likely be brought to Articles for deletion, simply because the business doesn't seem "notable" enough per Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) (at least, based on my cursory internet search), so you're better off holding back for now. Thank you for your time. I was replying to your updates yesterday and got a collision of page changes. Apparently, I was getting all these posts from other admins. Anyway, I think the crisis is over and feel that it was too quick to appear and being escalated to such level. As per User_page "Be very careful not to scare a newbie away from Wikipedia, and try to assume good faith that they are merely trying to share information about themselves." I think the notices may have been a bit excessive, but that happens here when admins or other editors notice any type of advertising or promotional editing. Wikipedia's culture doesn't really tolerate advertising, and has expressly rejected it in several internal polls. Don't worry too much about this - you've revised your user page, and the previous content is still in the history in the event the company becomes sufficiently notable to merit an article. Also, don't fret too much about image upload notices - they're designed to be more informational, not as serious as warnings about content and advertising. Mindmatrix 14:23, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've made a preliminary copyedit to the first few paragraphs, removed inappropriate content, removed links to missing images, and added a category, but it needs a little more work to give it a more encyclopedic tone. Thank you for your edits. It is marked as an advertisement. I'm not selling the park. Or actually, it is not a bad idea to invite people to this place to spend a summer day here. It is very family friendly. Do you think that it is OK to leave the way it is now and use it as a template for other parks (I assume that you've seen other articles)? Articles are marked as advertisements when they promote the subject, or are written in a tone that suggests an editorial position by Wikipedia. The Colonel Samuel Smith Park article is somewhat promotional - I toned down the language, but it needs more editing before it is encyclopedic. The advertisement tag is just a note for readers to take the content with the proverbial "grain of salt", and for editors to tweak the content to be more encyclopedic. Specifically, it won't lead to deletion unless the content is not updated within a reasonable amount of time. For comparison, read the articles for Allan Gardens and High Park. Those are written in a tone more appropriate for Wikipedia. An article should never make suggestions to the reader. (So, the article should not invite people to this place to spend a summer day.) I've revised the second paragraph of that article; it now uses a more encyclopedic tone. Try to revise the rest of the article to have the same tone (eg - remove sentences like To burn off the hot dogs and hamburgers you just had for lunch), so we can get rid of that advertising tag. There's still quite a bit of promotional language. In essence, any text that speaks to the reader, such as "you can" or "your family" or "for your children" is an indiciation that the text needs editing. Here's my most recent edit to give you an example of the type of language that should be removed.
Regarding images, you may also consider uploading them to Wikimedia Commons, so that they'll be available to all Wikimedia projects, not just English Wikipedia. For example, from Commons they can be used on other Wikipedia language versions of the article, or on Wiktionary, Wikinews, or Wikiversity. Mindmatrix 18:51, 25 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

FYI conflict of interest guideline edit

Proposed deletion of List of Toronto Swimming Pools edit

 

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article List of Toronto Swimming Pools, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

This list, with the information it contains, is better suited for the City of Toronto's website than for Wikipedia.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

My thinking was to start a section about Toronto Swimming Pools the same way as on page List of Toronto parks. As a beginning I put a list of pools and their contact info. For example, Albion pool is providing facility for Etobicoke Underwater Club that provides SCUBA training. It is hard to find such piece of information on Toronto city web site. Would you consider that it will add a value to Wikipedia? If it looks like a directory (just because of phone #), I can easily delete it. Best regards, DreamGYM (talk) 21:12, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Although that info may be hard to find on the city's website, it doesn't imply Wikipedia should host it. As Blanchardb has stated, this is essentially a directory of Toronto swimming pools, of which few (if any) would merit an article on Wikipedia. There's not much to say about them other than their dimensions, hours of service, and service area. None of those things is encyclopedic. (An example of something that would make a pool notable is that it has been the training ground for Olympic swimmers, or has introduced innovative measures such as electronic timing.) Contact info should never be posted on Wikipedia articles (a link to the subject's website should be sufficient for such purposes). I think it would be better to delete the listing of pools, and merge the remaining content into Recreation in Toronto. Mindmatrix 00:24, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
