INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS IN NAMIBIA

Industrial relations deals with labor relationship or in other words employment relationship. It places emphasis on [1] and joint regulations. The industrial relationship includes a tripartite relationship which includes the employee represented by the trade union, the employer represented by the employer's organization and the state as a third party. The relationship between the employer and the employee a primary relationship while the relationship between the state and employees or the employer is called secondary relationship. maintaining this relationship requires effort from all the 3 sides but mainly from the employees side and the employers side, failing to do so results into labour disputes. from the beginning of this year we have seen an increasing number in labor cases which results in industrial actions. The recent industrial action was when polytechnic of Namibia (administrative employees)went on a 3 day strike after reaching deadlock on wage negotiations. The [2] just like any other strike affected its operations as well as academic life of students. This shows that the employment relationship in Namibia is not really good for many companies. Negative relationship brings along negative effects on both the employer and the employees and not forgetting the nation at large.

EFFECTS OF INDUSTRIAL ACTION

  • It reduces productivity of a company.McHugh R. said "unions tend to reduce productivity through the influence on work rules and the organization structure".[3]
  • It damages the employment relationship. the employee may start feeling that he/she is not needed in the company while the employer may think that all what the employees care is about money and not making the company grow.

WAYS TO IMPROVE INDSTRIAL RELATIONS IN NAMIBIA

  • Firstly both parties should know that any event or action in the workplace will have an effect on labor relations e.g an employee not being happy with supervisor, so they need to establish procedures and policies that people can follow inorder to improvw sound relationship in the workplace. Employees and Supervisors should both receive training on the policies that are in place.
  • Employers should maintain continous interaction with employees as well as giving feeedback so that the employee can know about thier perfomance.[4]
