styles

edit

Hey, Deb

Given the endless debate/rows etc over styles I've been thinking as to what is the best way to come up with a consensus solution. Styles have to be in an article, but using them upfront is, I think, a mistake and highly controversial. I've designed a series of templates which I think might solve the problem. There are specific templates for UK monarchs, Austrian monarchs, popes, presidents, Scottish monarchs and HRHs. (I've protected them all, temporarily, because I want people to discuss them in principle rather than battle over content and design right now.) I've used a purple banner because it is a suitable royal colour and is also distinctive. They are eyecatching enough to keep some of the pro-styles people happy; one of their fears seemed to be that styles would be buried. But by not being used they are neutral enough to be factual without appearing to be promotional. I'd very much like your views. I'm going to put them on a couple of user pages and ask for a reaction. There needs to be a calm debate on them this time. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 03:15, 10 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Your help/input is urgently request at Talk:Alexandra of Greece. User:Matjlav and User:Arrigo are merrily moving things around, completely screwing up all the links. Noel (talk) 00:56, 13 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

PS: I don't usually check other User_talk: pages (so that I don't have to monitor a whole long list of User_Talk: pages - one for each person with whom I am having a "conversation"), so please leave any messages for me on my talk page (above); if you leave a message for me here I probably will not see it. I know not everyone uses this style (they would rather keep all the text of a thread in one place), but I simply can't monitor all the User_talk: pages I leave messages on. Thanks!

PPS: You probably ought to archive your talk page again... Noel (talk) 00:56, 13 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Not a problem; I've been busy with Japanese emperors, and all sorts of other things! The discussion is now at Talk:Princess Alexandra of Greece (it's now a disambig page, we're trying to agree on names for the individuals, other than Alexandra of Greece, who does appear to be properly named). Anyway, if I could get a second opinion from you on what name we should use for the first one, I'd really appreciate it; I have suggested something, but I'm not sure if it's the best option. It has to move from where it is now, because I'm going to turn that into a disambig page too. Noel (talk) 21:58, 21 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

regarding User Arrigo

edit

hi there Deb, Arrigo has been unilaterally moving articles all over the place, such as Emperor Jimmu of Japan for example. The users actions are quite amazing I think. Are there any suggestions as to what can be done? with kind regards.. Gryffindor 22:40, August 25, 2005 (UTC)

There was no discussion on each emperor's page specifically; rather, the topic was considered en masse at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles). General consensus seeming to have been reached, Jefu and I are moving them all to the new consensus names. Noel (talk) 20:18, 30 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Hi Deb, welcome back. Thanks for your message. Yes I have been in touch with user Jefu and he seems to be taking care of things just fine. Therefore I have no further questions regarding this issue at the moment. The behaviour of Arrigo continues to be troublesome, if you take a look at Thai royals. One example is Princess Srinagarindra, The Princess Mother of Thailand. with kind regards Gryffindor 11:02, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

Hi Deb,

edit

Thanks for your note. Anyway, I just put everything together for when it would be needed. Probably a more "official" mediation round would still be necessary, if there ever would be a RfC: both HappyCamper and MarkSweet did some "light" advisory action which they would maybe not endorse as enough "negotiation assistance" for supporting the RfC. But, and that's the important point: maybe the notion that other wikipedians care proves enough to help the situation to calm down.

What I already communicated to others involved (some in reply to an e-mail they sent me), is that some space with enough serenity is needed, if we want to be able to talk about some sort of follow-up of the Names & Titles NC, a little less than a year after it came into existence. That in itself is a very difficult point (I read your comments to some of the votes I initiated!). So, I try to be patient, try to get possible impediments out of the way, etc, and remain confident that the wikipedia system is strong enough to get us on track for the real talk. Thanks, and see you. --Francis Schonken 20:02, 4 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the response

edit

Hi, Deb. Thanks for the response on Talk:Swansea. I shall try not to worry, then... :) It just galls me that whilst I spent half an hour expanding one of those stubs, and an afternoon trying to verify a claim from one of the others, the creator was off starting another dozen. I really do feel that focusing on very small areas ignores the connections and similarities and contrasts between many of those areas as wider regions, but I am obviously in the minority there. Duplicate Articles

edit

I'm not 100% sure how they both have happened. I think someone may have created a redirect that another user has copied the text into, rather than renaming. They both appear to be the same text. I would say have one article at Princess Victoria, Princess Royal? Astrotrain 19:25, September 11, 2005 (UTC)

I think if Victoria Adelaide of the United Kingdom is redirected to Princess Victoria, Princess Royal then the history lost will be immatieral- they are essentially the same article text with no major noticeable differences. Astrotrain 20:02, September 11, 2005 (UTC)

Scottish Coat of Arms

edit

Hi Deb, What do you think should be the Coat of Arms displayed on the Scotland page? An edit war has been started by User:Mais oui! who wants to use the old arms of the King of Scotland, rather than the Royal Coat of Arms of Scotland. See Talk:Scotland. Astrotrain 21:49, 15 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

NB — I am going through and disambiguating. The arms Astrotrain linked to above are no longer located at that page; they are now at Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom (for use in Scotland). Doops | talk 04:01, 16 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Roger Federer

edit

Deb, in the article Roger Federer, you changed this:

"His father met Roger's mother while on a business trip to South Africa for the Basel based chemical company Ciba Specialty Chemicals."

TO:

"His parents met while on a business trip to South Africa for the Basel based chemical company Ciba Specialty Chemicals."

The first sentence makes it clearer that HE was on the trip. Your new change can make it appear to read that they BOTH could be on a trip, like to a corporate meeting; one from office X and one from office Y, to a meeting at office Z. Your sentence reads that they could both be on a trip. There must be something better than either your sentence, or mine?

I want to make it clear that he worked in, and out of, the Basel facility, and she worked in the Johannesburg location, both of Ciba SC. They met at the Johannesburg location when Robert went to work with the sales staff in Johannesburg.

What do you think ?

Help with moving articles

edit

I was wondering if I could get your help. Noticed that you spend a lot of time in the royalty area, and that is where I can usually be found. It seems that we need to move Princess Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, back to where it was before Arrigo got his hands on it. But, seeing as how I never moved a page before, I was looking for a little help. Would be greatly appreciated. Thanx. Prsgoddess187 23:43, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Esperanza!

edit

Welcome, Deb/Archive 3, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member, you might be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. A spam list is maintained by Redwolf24 to keep members up to date; you might want to consider adding your name to the list. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Essjay, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of myself, Flcelloguy, Ryan Norton, and Acetic Acid. The next set of elections will be at the end of the year, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact me via email or talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to be!

You might want to take a look at Talk:Côte d'Ivoire. International usage on all major English speaking medias, as well as WP Manual of Style and NCs, suggest that that page should be at Ivory Coast. edit

Hey Deb,

I've opened up an AFD for Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Naming conventions (Western nobility). That article was created in effect as an alternative to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (names and titles) and then rewritten by the author, in a cut and paste. I strongly disapprove of someone doing a cut and paste of one article, moving it to a new (badly named) page and editing it without a consensus (or even it would seem an awareness among people that this new page existed), and in the process losing the old article's edit history. As a longtime contributor on the topic of royal and noble naming to the original page and to many articles in the area you might wish to cast a vote on the issue. Category Deletion: Natives of West Glamorgan

edit

Hiya, I realised I made an error of judgement by putting people into this category. Can we hold fire on deletion on Category:Natives of Glamorgan for now, while I re-categorise the people in this list to the modern administrative counties, which is the more common categorisation of natives.

In the mean time, can you do me a favour - I don't know how to nominate articles for deletion - can you nominate natives of Category:Natives of South Glamorgan for me. This is similar to the one you have nominated for deletion and it is already empty. Thanks! (Sloman 20:54, 28 November 2005 (UTC))Reply

I didn't put up the verification flag, so I can't comment on it directly, however since there is so much information on Zobole on the net, you shouldn't have a problem verifying the info. Remember that asking for verifiction doesn't mean the person inherently disbelieves what's on the page (although they might), it means you simply have to cite your facts. --Bachrach44 18:39, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hiya Deb,

Felix Dies Nativitatis

Your comments would be welcome at Prime Minister. One user, without even bothering to go through the proper procedures, wants to rename the article Prime minister and keeps moving it to push that version!!! While there is an article for all uppercasing or all lowercasing, half-casing (which is all WP allows, as all lowercasing is not possible in article titles) would produce a semi-literate mess that would make WP a laughing stock. A student who writes the title that way in an essay earns an instant fail because it is seen as such a monumental clanger. With all the attacks WP is under right now, the last thing WP needs is to make it look as though it does not know how to write the title of the office of premier correctly. What next? Lord mayor? United states? FearÉIREANN\(caint) 23:48, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi mate,

You may remember the war on styles that was waged some time ago and the eventual compromise reached which meant that styles (Holiness, Majesty, Royal Highness, etc) are no longer used in royalty articles. A series of templates were created to enable users to warn other users who attempt to reinsert styles into articles that that is no longer WP policy. However a user who is trying to get a whole series of templates deleted has nominated them on the WP:TFD for deletion. I am thoroughly fed up having to defend necessary templates from the minority of deletion police on WP who seem to act as a group: one nominates, then the rest all vote to agree with them. All help to defend the necessary templates in the styles series gratefully received. Thanks. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 19:02, 31 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi, whether this was your idea or someone else's, whether it has been discussed at length somewhere or not, I think the "New drama" sections are a very good idea. Personally, I've been reluctant so far to add any plays because I'm not quite sure if there are any restrictions (prize-winning? commercial success? by country/language? whatever) and if you are following some systematic approach. Not sure how to revert a move once it has been edited. Should we just move again. Thanks for the help.Prsgoddess187 18:02, 19 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

User talk pages

edit

(copied from User_talk:Nick_Levine): Hi. I deleted the new page which I don't think you meant to create. Nice try, though! Deb 18:29, 19 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Deb. Sorry I got that wrong, what I'd meant to do was to edit their talk page. No idea how I slipped onto the User page. I see User talk:24.97.179.166 that user has been blocked now (for today, that is). Thanks. Nick Levine 04:19, 20 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey Debs,

A belated happy new year.

A user just changed the opening of Diana, Princess of Wales to refer to her as Diana Spencer. To be honest I have been thinking that that needs to be done for a long time. It is crazy that Diana, as a (former) royal consort, is still at her death name when others who died subsequently have long since reverted to the standard royal biographical format of maiden name. It isn't as if we can even use the most common name rule to justify it given that far more people would use the non-existent Princess Diana than D,P o W. In addition, D, P o W lapsed as a style on her death. I'd be interested to hear your views before formally proposing it. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 20:36, 20 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Category:Years in art

edit

All these NNNN in art articles you're creating seem to be unmaintainable. Have you thought about more granular groupings such as decade-in-art? Quarl (talk) 2006-01-25 09:21Z

Hi. I'm not sure why you say that the "years in art" articles are unmaintainable. They are in line with the years in topic for literature, music, etc. All I'm really doing is filling in blanks that already exist. Deb 12:51, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
You're right that there are other "year in X" series. I think all the "year in X" articles are unmaintainable; if something is globally wrong we need to start complaining somewhere right? See List of state leaders in 18 BC, List of state leaders in 18BC, List of state leaders in 17 BC for an example of what I mean by unmaintainable. Quarl (talk) 2006-01-25 18:09Z

Wikipedia:Welsh Wikipedians' notice board

edit

I've created a fairly simple Wikipedia:Welsh Wikipedians' notice board (shortcut WP:WWNB) to try to get things started. Please have a look and consider signing on, adding it to your watchlist and helping to make sure any users with an interest in the subject know about it. Also please feel free to add things and to change anything you feel needs changing – I'm not under the impression that I own it! Rhion 19:48, 27 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hwyl

edit

Hi Deb - lucky you caught me when you did! I've just been offline for a week thanks to having to look after my Mam when she's not well... Anyway, are you trying to block someone and using the drop-down menu of periods of time to block them for? I think this is the problem - when the box first appeared, I tried editing the periods into Welsh but found they didn't work, which is why I changed them back to English. Obviously someone else has tried to do it, too. Could you try putting "24 hours" or "7 days" or whatever in the "arall" box and seeing if it works? -- Arwel (talk) 23:01, 30 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Article creation

edit

I have been looking through the list of unwatched pages (available only to administrators) and found 1815 in art. I see that you created this but were not watching it. You may want to go to your preferences and under the "editing" tab turn on "Add pages you edit to your watchlist". This will enable you to keep an eye out for any edits that are made to pages you create and help to revert vandalism. If you do decide to turn it on can you please drop me a note on my talk page so I can cut down my excessive watchlist. Thanks. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 03:08, 5 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks anyway. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 15:55, 5 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Viktor Nessler

Thank you for contributing to this article. I note that you give an alternative spelling. What is the basis for this? At the Opera Project Wikipedia:WikiProject Opera we are following the New Grove Dictionary of Opera as our main source and this does not mention the other spelling. I also wonder why the 1911 Britannica is cited. Surely this is hardly reliable? Or was this from the other page which you merged? Best.

Kleinzach 00:30, 8 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks very much, Deb. I'll go ahead and make a few small changes then. The merger/redirect is certainly useful.

Thank you for your offer of help. We do have a few things that need fixed which are beyond our technical skills! One anomaly is that the operetta categories are independent of the opera ones although operetta is supposed to be a genre of opera. It may be simple to bring the operetta branch back into the opera tree. I'd be grateful if you have any ideas! Best

Henrich Steffens

edit

You've just turned this into a redirect to Henrik Steffens with the edit summary "redirect to duplicate article" — but not only were the articles not duplicates, they contradicted each other. Your redirect essentially chose one over the other, with no reason that I can see. I've reverted the change, and added merge templates to the two articles. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 23:09, 10 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure why you felt that the work had to be done so quickly; I suppose that, without the "merge" notice there was the possibility of confusion, but in merging them on the run, the article that you chose to keep reads rather oddly (e.g.: "He moved back to Germany, to return to Denmark only occasionally. Schleiermacher was so much struck by their excellence that he endeavoured, unsuccessfully, to obtain for Steffens a chair in the new Berlin University in 1804"). I'll rewrite it, but a period of discussion and consensus wouldn't have hurt. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 17:52, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've merged the material, so that it makes sense and is presented in chronological order. It's true that, having recently copy-edited and wikified one article I was personally peeved to see it simply turned into a redirect to another article full of typing errors and poor formatting, but the real issue was the content. Having just merged the material, I must say that I disagree that there was very little difference. Still, it's all finished now. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 18:02, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Another Esperanzial note...

edit

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

question 2

edit

hi Deb, I am having problems with User:Cfvh moving articles of consorts such as Princess Alice of the United Kingdom to Alice of the United Kingdom without prior discussion. Similar thing happened to Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia, which I reverted. IMO since the husbands of these ladies were not sovereign anymore, the rule on queen-consorts does not apply. The German monarchies gave up their sovereignty in the strict sense to the German Empire in 1871. The rule on consorts IMO applies only to monarchies that were completely sovereign and independent, and not if they were a subgroup (in German: Bundesfürsten) as they became part of the higher nobility (Hochadel). The only sovereign monarchy after 1871 was in that case the Hohenzollern of the German Empire. User:Cfvh has been moving these articles without prior discussion, even though I already pointed out to him he should discuss these things first.... maybe I'm totally wrong, but I'm quite sure that the rule does not apply to nobility. looking forward to your opinion, thanks. Gryffindor 12:47, 11 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • :) Thanks for the support. I know. Just having fun with it. Isn't it fun to watch how a simple question/request turns into an intense discussion/arguement (depending on who is involved sometimes) over WP:NC and encyclopedia naming conventions in general. Will be fun to see how this turns out. Personally I think if the Grand Duchy was an independent sovereignty, then the consorts should be named as empress/queen consorts. We'll see. Carson Gulley

edit

Hi there. You voted to delete the article on Carson Gulley - understandable, as the way it was written suggested he was only famous for inventing a pie only known at one university. Having done some research I've discovered he was a little more notable than that, and I've added some extra stuff to the article. It's still borderline, and I'd understand you still voting to delete, but I wanted to give you a heads-up and the opportunity to reconsider. --OpenToppedBus - Talk to the driver 12:27, 13 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

George Sassoon

edit

I got your message about George Sassoon. I agree it would be interesting to know about his surviving child since she would apparently be Siegfried Sassoon's only remaining descendent. However, I had not even heard of George until I read his obituary last night, and it did not mention anything about the surviving child other than that it was a daughter. However, I will try to research this. Academic Challenger 02:27, 18 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

edit
Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...
