License tagging for Image:Dennis Fairclough.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Dennis Fairclough.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 23:06, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Conflict of interest edit

If you have a close connection to some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with,
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors,
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam);
    and you must always:
  4. avoid breaching relevant policies and guidelines, especially neutral point of view, verifiability, and autobiography.

Accounts used solely for blatant self-promotion may be blocked without further warning.

For more details, please read the Conflict of Interest guideline. Thank you.

I think this applies particularly in the light of your comment to User:Bsradams, where you say you've been working with Bruce Wydner and that you're friends.[1] I've raised the issue at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard#Bruce Wydner. Gordonofcartoon 11:29, 25 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image:Dennis_Fairclough.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Dennis_Fairclough.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Videmus Omnia 20:58, 25 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Possibly unfree Image:Ray_noorda.jpg edit

An image that you uploaded or altered, Image:Ray_noorda.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images because its copyright status is disputed. If the image's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the image description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Videmus Omnia 21:02, 25 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Weidner articles edit

Re your statements at Talk:Bruce Wydner, Talk:Language technology, Talk:Weidner Communications Inc.: have you read, as I suggested above, the Wikipedia conflict of interest guidelines? Do you see the problem with your creating and directly editing articles relating to the work of someone of whom you've said "we are the best of friends"?

The general advice in such situations is that if you have such a conflict of interest, you take a back seat and help via the Talk page.

The difficulty with the existing articles is that they look blatantly promotional. You've put together material placing Weidner technology into a pivotal role in MT history and even as the most significant direct line ancestor of Wordperfect. This may or may not be true, but it's a novel assertion and as such risks being original research. You should be particularly cautious about the WP:NOR warning about Synthesis of published material serving to advance a position. Here is not the place to set the record straight.

Some of the sources aren't acceptable anyway. We can't use material such as "message to W. J. Hutchins, April 30, 2007, Bruce Wydner" that hasn't been third-party published.

I think there is a place for a Weidner article: but it needs to be neutral. It's not difficult to find sources that place the technology in its historical context (ALPS, Systran, etc) and not just reporting the market-speak. It's not difficult to find papers that tell the downside: for instance, A survey of machine translation: its history, current status, and future prospects (1988, includes Weidner company history, comparison with competitors, and candid assessment of its strengths and weaknesses); Good Applications for Crummy Machine Translation (1991, ref to Weidner kit being slower and more expensive than human translation).

Given the problems with the current articles, it would be a lot easier to scrap them and start from scratch, making sure that there is consensus at all stages that they are neutral. Gordonofcartoon 21:35, 26 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Tfwtlsitsi.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Tfwtlsitsi.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 20:42, 11 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dennis Fairclough edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Dennis Fairclough, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Dennis Fairclough. Reviewed PDOS edit

Hi there,

I've reviewed the article that you created at PDOS. Good work, and an interesting (if rather minor [-: ) topic. I made a few changes, but basically it's OK as a stub article. If you want to expand the topic, there is quite a bit of information in the source that you found.

Well done! --Slashme (talk) 10:05, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
