Managing a conflict of interest

edit

Hello, CuriousExplorerJourney. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Draft:Institute of Insurance and Risk Management, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. DoubleGrazing (talk) 11:50, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi DoubleGrazing, I have reviewed the Wikipedia guidelines regarding conflict of interest and can assert that none apply to me. CuriousExplorerJourney (talk) 12:02, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
So how would you describe your relationship to this company, in your own words? -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 12:05, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your question. Just to clarify, this is not a company but rather a college based in India. I do not have any association or connection with this college. I hope this clarifies any confusion. CuriousExplorerJourney (talk) 12:10, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I meant to say 'organisation', my bad.
Okay, let me ask it this way: how did you choose this as your first (and so far only) topic to write about? There was presumably a reason? -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 12:13, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, there was a reason behind my choice to write about this topic initially. I chose this topic because it aligns closely with my professional expertise in Insurance. I look forward to exploring a broader range of topics as well to edit and create. CuriousExplorerJourney (talk) 12:17, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
You uploaded the photograph, and the logo, as your own work? -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 12:22, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Actually, there wasn't an SVG logo available online, so I recreated it using an SVG Editor - Inkscape and then uploaded it. The photograph is a screenshot taken from a video published on IIRM website. CuriousExplorerJourney (talk) 12:28, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
So neither is your own work, then? -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 12:35, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I created the SVG version of the logo. Also, just to add, Wikipedia does not allow adding copyrighted logo by users with less than certain number of edits, hence, I could not upload it in the copyrighted section. I don't own the photo, its a screenshot from the video. CuriousExplorerJourney (talk) 12:39, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
The reason why copyrighted material cannot be uploaded is that it is in most cases illegal to do so. The workaround is not to pretend that it is your own work instead. If you faithfully recreate someone else's copyrighted design, that is still their copyright. You have now released the institute's proprietary trade mark into the public domain. I expect they wouldn't be very happy if they knew.
The same goes for the photo.
I will request for both to be deleted. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 12:43, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Alright, but would you let me know, how are the logos of various organizations added to articles, so that, I can follow the proper process for uploading images and logos? CuriousExplorerJourney (talk) 12:45, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
There is a provision called 'fair use', which allows low-resolution logos to be used in published articles on the entity to which the logo relates. This does not apply in the draft space, so logos should only be added after the draft is published in the main article space.
And just so we're clear on this, you may not upload anything as your own work, unless it actually is that. When you upload your own work, you are agreeing to release your proprietary rights in that work into the public domain, and clearly you cannot do that with someone else's property. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 12:52, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Understood! Thank you for clarifying the provisions regarding fair use and the guidelines for uploading content. CuriousExplorerJourney (talk) 12:59, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
