Frederick Russell Burnham (1861–1947) was an American scout and world traveling adventurer known for his service to the British Army in colonial Africa and for teaching woodcraft to Robert Baden-Powell, thus becoming one of the inspirations for the founding of the international Scouting Movement. Burnham had little formal education, attending high school but never graduating. He began his career at 14 in the American Southwest as a scout and tracker for the U.S. Army in the Apache Wars and Cheyenne Wars. Sensing the Old West was getting too tame, as an adult Burnham went to Africa where this background proved useful. He soon became an officer in the British Army, serving in several battles there. During this time, Burnham became friends with Baden-Powell, and passed on to him both his outdoor skills and his spirit for what would later become known as Scouting. Burnham eventually moved on to become involved in espionage, oil, conservation, writing and business. His descendants are still active in Scouting. (more...)

Frederick Russell Burnham; duplicate named references edit
Hi. I see you're the most frequent contributor to this article. I'm trying to improve it and have noticed some issues with the referencing. The article is using the named referencing system at the moment and with this system you should not name two things with the same name. But there /are/ duplicates and this is causing intended references to be hidden and others to, possibly, be incorrectly footnoted. Here's one example; the article contains:

They are the same except for the page number. Further along, there's a <ref name="hammond" />. If it were not for the third, clearing this up would be straightforward. At the moment, all three footnotes are being bunched together as p. 565, which is clearly not what is intended for the second instance (p. 754 is not appearing in the footnotes at all). The second can be fixed simply by adjusting the name, but the third needs a peek at the actual source to determine the appropriate page number. That's what I'm hoping you can provide. I'll make a further tweak to fix the second, leaving the third @565. There are five other named references that are duplicated; I've not yet taken a close look at those (they are: "jameswest", "pressreflib", "efknight", "sniper", "chances"). - To get through the gauntlet the FAR types have in store, this article is going to need a lot of bolstering of the sourcing, as well as copy editing. The curent citation mechanisms are not really up to including detailed page citations and things should shift along to better mechanisms; I'm quite good at this and will help. See this edit, which I reverted; it de-clutters the prose by collating the citations into a more easily maintained section (I reverted it to first deal with the duplicate named references). This is often an intermediate stage on the way to something like where I'm taking pages like Sinking of the RMS Titanic; Nikita Khrushchev and Pedro II of Brazil are others I've reworked the references on. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.
Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!

December 10 is Ada Lovelace's birthday! Not only was she the world's first computer programmer, but also the world's first female open source developer! Come celebrate with Wikimedia District of Columbia at Busboys & Poets for an informal get together!
The Washington, DC event will be held on Monday, December 10, 2012 at Busboys & Poets on 5th St NW & K St NW near Mt Vernon Square. The area is easily accessible by the Red Line Chinatown stop and the Yellow Line and Green Line Mt Vernon Square stop, as well as by WMATA buses.
Wikimedia DC Holiday Party and Wiki Loves Monuments Exhibition edit
Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.
The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long. In addition, we will be exhibiting the finalists of the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest at the event.
