Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:It Gets Better Canada

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:It Gets Better Canada, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. creffett (talk) 22:23, 30 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Managing a conflict of interest

edit

  Hello, Chrisgudgeon. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the COI guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. creffett (talk) 22:24, 30 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Can you confirm whether or not you are using your real name? A concern has been raised about a policy aspect and I am inquiring further, thank you. N.J.A. | talk 01:49, 31 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hey Guys:
Thanks for all your feedback; this is my first wiki post so I'm happy for the feedback. I also want to apologize; I thought i was uploading to a temporary page for drafts, and did not realize it would be vetted at this point. I hadn't had a chance to ad citations etc. So this was definitely intended to be a draft!
To answer one of your questions: yes, I am who I say I am. I am christopher gudgeon, I live in Toronto, Canada. AND yes, I am affiliated with It Gets Better Canada. I founded the organization and am currently CEO/President. I am, however, a very experience and professional writer, and my intention in writing this article was to provide a factual, informative article about this organization, backed up with cited sources. It is a registered not-for-profit organization, that provides supports for LGBT youth; our goal is to provide a legitimate and authoritative description of the organization, and not to create an infomercial or ad.
So, again; sorry if I didn't follow proper protocol. I think you've deleted the article already, which is fine. Please let me know if I have a next step.
best,
Chris Gudgeon

Chrisgudgeon, I have moved your response to the bottom of the talk page. New posts and replies should go at the bottom to maintain the chronological flow of the discussion.
I will direct you to Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) before you make a second attempt (if you haven't already seen it). Wikipedia topics must be notable to be considered worthy of inclusion - that is, they must be of interest to the world at large over a period of time. We use evidence from sources deemed both reliable and independent of the topic to verify what is written about the topic, and show that it is sufficiently notable for inclusion.
While I personally agree that your organization does important and good work, one must remember that Wikipedia doesn't publish articles to tell the world about a noble cause. Nobility is not the same as notability; the notability criteria will determine whether an article should exist, no matter how worthy the cause.
Because you are very closely affiliated with the organization, you have a conflict of interest (COI). While COI editing is not prohibited, we discourage it because it is difficult for involved writers like yourself to write from the required dispassionate viewpoint, rely on only third-party sources and resist the temptation to use self-published sources or your own unpublished personal knowledge and experience. I would recommend you review Wikipedia's plain and simple conflict of interest guide and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for a more in-depth explanation of this topic.
You can try to write another draft article with third-party references and neutral tone. I would also recommend using the {{UserboxCOI}} template on your userpage (User:Chrisgudgeon) as a more visible declaration of your affiliation. This will assure others that you are being transparent, and you will benefit from the assistance/expertise of other editors who see that you're editing in good faith.
Creating articles on Wikipedia is a difficult task, but don't get discouraged. If you can show that this organization is notable, then I'm certain it will be accepted and published at some point. Best of luck to you. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 17:31, 31 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

thanks this is all very helpful and I appreciate the encouragement!

@Chrisgudgeon: I would like to ask you about an older account that resembles your name: Cgudgeon. Did you use this account in the past? If so, do you still have access to it? --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 16:21, 1 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

its very, very possible that's my account. i did have a log in before but could not remember user name. knowing the name, i could probably get access to it, and would be happy to delete either account.

re: notability. It Gets Better Canada has been a notable presence in Canada, and abroad. For example, we spearheaded a national campaign to have the practice of conversion therapy stopped in Canada (a campaign that included a 71,000+ change.org petition); this campaign helped bring about fundamental legislative changes that are taking effect right. I will revise the article with this criteria in mind, and include secondary source citations to support.

@Chrisgudgeon: Just leave the old account alone... accounts cannot be deleted. Wikipedia has a policy about using multiple accounts - in a nutshell, one user = one account. I will put a note that the old one has been abandoned and that you are using this account henceforth. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 17:44, 1 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

thanks!
