"The" Ohio State University

edit

Please note that extensive discussion has taken place on the talk page of Ohio State University and the conclusion was that per WP:COMMONNAME, we will continue to refer to it as Ohio State University. I have never even seen a reference showing that "The" Ohio State University even is their official name, but that is a side point. If you can show me one, I would be interested. In any case the name of the school on Wikipedia is Ohio State University. I have reverted every edit you have made inserting that into any article. Gtwfan52 (talk) 04:04, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Actually do not be fooled. The discussion and consensus was and is to use "The" in the beginning of the name. WP:COMMONNAME is for article titles ONLY. I am not sure where Gtwfan52 came up with the idea that it is to be used throughout the article bodies on Wikipedia. Thats not true and if you look at the talk page, you will find a large consensus for using the official name in that article.--JOJ Hutton 04:57, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

This is a situation where I am have more knowledge than you do. I am an Ohio State student, and all of our letterhead and even our website has a logo that says "The Ohio State University". If you could please change the title of the actual page back to the original, correct version. 12:35, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Chriscahill1992 (talk) 12:36, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Chriscahill1992Reply

The founder of this website, Wikipedia, his name is Larry Sanger, he went to The Ohio State University. Im surprised you guys got this wrong. 23:06, 7 August 2013 (UTC)~

Please see WP:OFFICIALNAME. Also, you got any reliable sources for that? Thanks, Insulam Simia (talk · contribs) 19:13, 1 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yeah i got a reliable source for ya....I go to the university. You guys are terrible. 19:24, 1 September 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 164.107.232.75 (talk)

We're not terrible. We just can't accept original research. You can't cite "I went to this University", as that's silly (no offense intended linking that). Insulam Simia (talk · contribs) 19:33, 1 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

You know whats silly? You thinking you know more about my school than I do. if you need proof, go to www.osu.edu 19:36, 1 September 2013 (UTC)~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 164.107.232.75 (talk)

You obviously haven't read WP:OFFICIALNAME. Insulam Simia (talk · contribs) 19:58, 1 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

go to the website, "The Ohio State University" is the first thing on the page 21:12, 1 September 2013 (UTC)~

Yes, but that shows their WP:OFFICIALNAME. Wikipedia uses the WP:COMMONAME, i.e. we use what most secondary sources use. Your example, http://www.osu.edu, is a primary source and is excluded when deciding what the common name is. Insulam Simia (talk · contribs) 08:04, 2 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Cecily Strong at the screening of The Host.jpg

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on File:Cecily Strong at the screening of The Host.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.stylebistro.com/lookbook/Little+Black+Dress/FU9CW50KZbY/angle/Q1Y9QvAJmwW. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Free use does not apply in instances when a substitute for the copyrighted material could be had. It is copyrighted, Getty is a sales agent for professional photographers, who don't generally give their work away. She is alive, so a substitute photo could be had by taking one yourself. It doesn't have to be easily available, just available. Gtwfan52 (talk) 04:13, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

12:34, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Hey man. Thanks for letting me know. I really want to get a picture of Cecily on her wikipedia page. If I took a screenshot myself of a performance of hers on SNL, would that qualify as fair use? Please allow me to upload another file, I promise I won't do anything stupid. It is not allowing me to post another file. Chriscahill1992 (talk)Chriscahill1992

It is a screenshot you made yourself of copyrighted TV content. The only way you can use a copyrighted image of a living person (and almost all are) is to have the copyright owner (in the case of a photo, that is usually the photographer; for a screenshot it is the owner of whatever content you took it from) release the copyright under either of the two licenses Wikipedia uses. (CC-BY-SA 3.0 License and/or GFDL). Professional photographers generally will not do that as it releases their image for free reuse. Would you give something away that you normally sold for profit? The major photo upload services (fliker, picassa) and google images all have tools that allow you to search with a search parameter for copyright license. Perhaps you can find one that way. Wikipedia takes copyright issues very seriously, as the Foundation can be sued for copyright violations. I would suggest that you have a more experienced editor check any further images you get from the net prior to you uploading them. Further violations of copyright rules could lead to sanctions, including a block. Feel free to drop me a note if I can be of more help. Happy editing. Gtwfan52 (talk) 19:57, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Cecily Strong.png

edit

Thank you for uploading File:Cecily Strong.png. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Insulam Simia (talk) 12:49, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Well then, what do you recommend I do man? Chriscahill1992 (talk) 13:05, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

We can't accept images of people that are non-free, because there is a chance that they may be replaceable by an image that is released under an open source license. The page will have to stay image-free, unless there is a picture of Cecily that is under a free license. Insulam Simia (talk) 13:09, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Then why did you say I could correct it? Chriscahill1992 (talk) 17:55, 27 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

The message above is a template. I didn't write it out myself. Insulam Simia (talk) 10:42, 28 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Then let me know how I can keep this image.... 14:46, 28 July 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry to tell you that it would be impossible to do so. The purpose of this image is incompatible with the expected purpose which of it being used as a TV screenshot. Insulam Simia (talk) 16:52, 28 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Chris, did you notice my message in the section above? i suggest a way you may be able to find a compatible free use image. If you have questions, don't hesitate to contact me. Gtwfan52 (talk) 23:30, 28 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Gtwfan, yes I noticed your message and searched google for free use images, none popped up. I noticed somebody captioned the photo referencing that Cecily was performing on SNL. That is recognizing the network. That should qualify for solving this dispute. Any other editors have any opinions? 07:54, 29 July 2013 (UTC)~ Chriscahill1992

Additionally you could've used Flickr, but I just had a quick search of Flickr and unfortunately couldn't find anything. Also, the IP editor adding the caption doesn't fix the problem since it's purpose is still to represent a person, otherwise the image wouldn't be on the article (Technically, if you changed the fair use rationale you could add this image to the List of Saturday Night Live cast members article, but bear in mind the image wouldn't exactly fit, since there isn't a place to add it and if it were to be added, it would look rather trivial).
