Help us improve wikimeets by filling in the UK Wikimeet survey! edit

Hello! I'm running a survey to identify the best way to notify Wikimedians about upcoming UK wikimeets (informal, in-person social meetings of Wikimedians), and to see if we can improve UK wikimeets to make them accessible and attractive to more editors and readers. All questions are optional, and it will take about 10 minutes to complete. Please fill it in at:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JJMNVVD

OSM edit

Hi Chippyy, I've left you a message on your OSM Wiki user talk page. I'm not sure how often you check it, hence me mentioning it here. Cheers, Bazonka (talk) 20:18, 28 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Manchester meetup 36 - 9 June 2019 edit

As you attended one of the previous two Manchester meetups and/or expressed an interest in being notified about future ones, this is a heads-up that I have started organising a meetup in Manchester on 9 June 2019 - details are at m:Meetup/Manchester/36. Please feel free to invite others with an interest in Wikimedia/Wikipedia to join us. Thryduulf (talk) 23:09, 8 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wikimaps Warper help needed edit

One of the images in a mosaic failed to import into the Warper and it was suggested that I contact you. Please let me know what is the best venue to contact you and how this issue can be resolved. Shyamal (talk) 13:05, 22 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Shyamal, I've just logged onto the server. It appears theres an error when the warper is trying to read the source image. I deleted the broken map. I'm not sure whats happening, but it's a very large image, dimension wise, and its in ycbr colorspace, or it could have something to do with the exif tags in it. You could try uploading an RGB version of it with no exif tags and see if that works. The mosaic / collection / layer could then be able to be re-imported, or I can manually add it in. Here is the error logs: https://gist.github.com/timwaters/94a0302387070ec38c17c2f5959bd27c Chippyy (talk) 10:06, 24 August 2021 (UTC).Reply

Thanks for the error logs, I am not sure what is causing the issue or what I could try but I have re-uploaded the images as they were from the source. The entire mosaic may be deleted and reuploaded manually if that works. There is almost no way to stitch up those images as they are too large so this might be the only way of getting to examine the complete map. Shyamal (talk) 13:30, 24 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
hmm, i have tried to re-upload a version of the map to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lambton1-noexif.jpg (which I guess could be safely marked for deletion?). The first version had no exif headers and the second was a bit smaller. Both didnt work. I don't know how to fix this easily. I/we could try changing it to a png or gif format and uploading that version as changing the format often works? Chippyy (talk) 16:22, 24 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think i found whats going on. The imagemagick thing has a limit on the dimensions. Im changing them now and seeing if that helps. Chippyy (talk) 16:37, 24 August 2021 (UTC).Reply
OK, the map was re-added and I added it to the mosaic! It should just need points and rectification now. It was due to the Imagemagick on the system being restricted to the size of the files it could work on. Chippyy (talk) 16:49, 24 August 2021 (UTC).Reply
Great! Thanks a lot. I guess this error has caused quite a few problems with my maps. Could I trouble you one more request - that you delete Lambton2.jpg from the mosaic and re-add the latest version c:File:Lambton2.jpg. Shyamal (talk) 17:19, 24 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Done! Chippyy (talk) 15:57, 26 August 2021 (UTC).Reply
Thanks a lot Tim! Shyamal (talk) 01:44, 27 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Trouble again. It appears as if Wikimaps-warper refuses to accept any maps from me ... (last I tried File:Sri_Lanka_1907.jpg, File:Siam_map_1857.jpg, File:1821_-_40_-_17_1834_Environs_of_Madras_from_surveys_by_Apprentices.jpg) Shyamal (talk) 05:40, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

502 Bad Gateway edit

Not sure if an overload from India caused it but there is a "502 Bad Gateway" on https://warper.wmflabs.org Shyamal (talk) 02:50, 20 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Files failing to import edit

all imported and added to mosaic --Chippyy (talk) 15:39, 4 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Not related to this set

added --Chippyy (talk) 15:39, 4 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Will add others when I find them. Shyamal (talk) 05:06, 28 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Also could you please add the following to https://warper.wmflabs.org/mosaics/15

all done, hopefully --Chippyy (talk) 15:46, 4 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

and remove c:File:File:Index_to_Indian_Atlas.jpg from the that set.

I set this to be an Index, so it's still listed but will not be shown on the mosaic --Chippyy (talk) 15:39, 4 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, did not know about that option. Shyamal (talk) 08:49, 5 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks in advance. Shyamal (talk) 10:29, 28 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Okay I think i've done them all now. The warper also has the wikimedia maps with english labels as another map layer, and ive also added a (hopeful) fix so that it should work better with memory. Chippyy (talk) 15:45, 4 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. The new English label layer is a life saver (I am sure other language users would want theirs too!). Shyamal (talk) 08:49, 5 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
and thank you! Your patience with the warper is greatly appreciated, and thanks for your reports - and other users do benefit too! Chippyy (talk) 16:17, 5 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I believe I have rectified all the maps in the mosaic but it shows up as 207 maps (205 maps rectified 99%) and cannot find the two maps that are unrectified by browsing the list. Shyamal (talk) 07:20, 6 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
https://warper.wmflabs.org/maps/4884 and https://warper.wmflabs.org/maps/4909 both only have 1 or 2 points. Hope this helps, had to look in the db!
(The ordering of a mosaic's maps isn't that great - there is some code somewhere that can help with that, but I've yet to roll it into the main mapwarper codebase) Chippyy (talk) 19:42, 6 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Ah thanks, I was looking for the string "unrectified"! Shyamal (talk) 07:19, 7 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Another observation, when viewing the mosaic overlay, the layer option for showing "map outlines" does not show outlines for all maps - is this by design? Shyamal (talk) 09:36, 7 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Call for presentations for WCNA 2022 and Mapping USA edit

This is a call for presentations by EOD, Sunday, October 15, for WikiConference North America (Nov 11-13), held jointly with OpenStreetMap US's Mapping USA. We encourage you to please submit your Wikipedia and Wikimedia proposals at Wikiconference:2022/Submissions or OpenStreetMap US proposals at Call for Proposals: WikiConference North America + Mapping USA. We are sending this mass message to you because we deduced that you may be in North America and interested in maps in Wikimedia or Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap, or OpenHistoricalMaps. We are looking for lightning talks in particular on Friday, Nov 11. Some suggestions:

  • Cultural similarities and differences, for instance OpenStreetMap and Wikivoyage (map and describe what you know) versus Wikipedia (verify with citations)
  • Type of licensing for each project and how they differ: OpenStreetMap, Commons, Wikidata, and Wikipedia
  • The flow of information from one project into another, and how maps are generated
  • How OpenHistoricalMap works and possible interactions with Wikimedia projects
  • Your ideas!

Large Mercator map problem edit

There seems to be a problem warping large maps spanning the 4 quadrants... at least in this case. Any idea what is going wrong? Shyamal (talk) 03:01, 8 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Leeds Wikipedia meetup on Saturday 4th May edit

Hello there! Interested in having a chat with fellow Wikipedians? There's a meetup in Leeds on Saturday 4th May 2024, at the Tiled Hall Café at Leeds Central Library.

Full details here.

You're receiving this one-off message as you're either a member of WikiProject Yorkshire, you've expressed an interest in a previous Leeds meetup years ago, or (for about 4 of you), we've met :)

I plan to organise more in future, so if you'd like to be notified next time, please say so over on the meetup page.

Please also invite any Wikimedia people you know (or have had wiki dealings with) – spread the word! Hope to see you there.
