Hey Hannes

edit

to my and mareikes problem: we get the picture from a scientific paper (J.Geng & D.Klionsky+ (2008). "The Atg8 and Atg12 ubiquitin-like conjugation systems in macroautophagy". EMBO reports 9(9): 859-864. PMID 18704115), which belongs to the nature publishing group. So i asked for a permission request and they sended me one for free. But i still don't know what license i have to choose in the wikipage! thank u Heithem

Hi Heithem, well it depends under what conditions they sent you the picture. Just becuase you have the picture in a sense that it is on your disk does not mean that you can publish it under any license. It is best if your picture is in the public domain, or released under one of the free licenses compatible with Wikipedia. In other cases, the uploader should own the copyright and be willing to release the image, thus you need permission to upload the image to Wikipedia and the owner needs to chose one license of the ones that are available. Greetings --hroest 08:51, 23 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Here another, more precise answer:
Sorry, with the exception of the PLoS journals the author gives up copyright to the material they submit to a journal. This then becomes the property of the journal. If you have draft figures (that differ significantly from the final versions) or images that were not quite of Nature quality than these are usually OK alternatives.
--hroest 23:11, 23 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Falls ihr tatsächlich die Freigabe bekommt von Nature oder so, sollte sie an die email Adresse auf dieser Seite geschickt werden, damit Wikipedia verifizieren kann, dass die Freigabe echt ist. Gruss --hroest 23:21, 23 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey hey,

edit

does anybody know how to circumvent the problems with copyright if you upload figures from papers or your wiki page? Wikipedia always deletes our figures immediately, even though we have a licence to use them on wiki...

Thanks for your help,

Mareike

Hey Mareike, the problem seems to be that you do not provide any information concerning its licensing status. When you upload the picture, be sure to include all necessary information and understand what the different licenses mean. If you made the picture yourself, could for example include the following template: PD-self and delete the two templates that are already there and all your problems would be solved. With this you would agree to release the picture into the public domain be sure to understand what that means if you want to do that. If you have further questions, you can talk to me on my talk page. Greetings --hroest 21:24, 21 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
PS: where did you get the picture from and under what license? --hroest 21:25, 21 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Also be sure to read the tutorial on this topic:
The most important issue for images is their copyright status. Images in the public domain, or released under one of the free licenses compatible with Wikipedia, can be uploaded at will. In other cases, the uploader should own the copyright and be willing to release the image. The various issues surrounding image copyright on Wikipedia are discussed here and at the linked articles.
For more details, see the tutorials Wikipedia:Picture tutorial, Wikipedia:Graphics tutorials, and Wikipedia:How to improve image quality.
The syntax for images is described here.
To include an image in an article, add the image file name between double square brackets, preceded by the word “Image:”, e.g., “". The image can be aligned with the right or left margin using those words as arguments, as in “"; right alignment is the default. Wikipedia's image policy strongly encourages using the 'thumbnail' size for most images, as in “", but an image that requires larger display, such as a map or diagram, can be scaled by specifying a pixel size, as in “". Captions are desirable, and are added at the end, after another vertical bar, as in “", which appears at right.

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Autophagy_related_gene_8.jpeg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

 • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
 • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. PhilKnight (talk) 21:19, 6 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Akt structure.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. FASTILY (TALK) 20:06, 9 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Akt activation.jpg

edit

A tag has been placed on File:Akt activation.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image with an unknown source or an unknown copyright status which has been tagged as such for more than 7 days, and it still lacks the necessary information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
