Welcome!

Hi Captain Disdain, and a warm welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you have enjoyed editing as much as I did so far and decide to stay. Unfamiliar with the features and workings of Wikipedia? Don't fret! Be Bold! Here's some good links for your reference and that'll get you started in no time!

Most Wikipedians would prefer to just work on articles of their own interest. But if you have some free time to spare, here are some open tasks that you may want to help out :

  • RC Patrol - Keeping a lookout for vandalism.
  • Cleanup - Help make unreadable articles readable.
  • Requests - Wanted on WP, but hasn't been created.
  • Merge - Combining duplicate articles into one.
  • Wikiprojects - So many to join, so many to choose from...Take your pick!

Oh yes, don't forget to sign when you write on talk pages, simply type four tildes, like this: ~~~~. This will automatically add your name and the time after your comments. And finally, if you have any questions or doubts, don't hesitate to contact me on my talk page. Once again, welcome! =)

Nice edits. Welcome to Wikipedia, by the way. :-)

Glad to see someone understood why poispakkoruotsi is non-notable. Do you think the NPOV banner could be removed from pakkoruotsi? It has been left there since a year ago, I think. Recent edits, by me for instance, seem to show both side of the issue... What do you think?

--Fred-Chess 19:11, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, on both counts!
Yeah, I think it can go. I just added a small edit myself and the article could undoubtedly still use some work (like every other article out there...), but on the whole, I'd say that the NPOV issue has been resolved pretty well. I left the NPOV banner in place just in case you want to discuss it with someone else before you actually remove it, but I'd say that NPOV has been established.
-- Captain Disdain 11:35, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)
You were right, I didn't have your page on my watchlist. I have made some changes to the article intro, perhaps you'd be interested in looking at them.
Well, you wrote that you think the article could need some work -- while I do agree, I still think the article has a lot of substance. So is the glass half full or half empty? :-)
It is not comparable to the Finn article, but that shouldn't be so surprising. I am glad I don't understand Finnish, by the way, I feel negative vibes from that page.  :-)
--Fred-Chess 16:09, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Meeting the criteria means that an article can be speedily deleted, not that it must be. In this case, your initial mistyping is wholly understandable, and likely to be repeated by anyone else looking up the name — so is a sensible redirect. Redirects are cheap, and if they make using Wikipedia easier, then they should stay. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 13:36, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Actually, I read your message too quickly, and didn't notice that there was a double redirect. As you've realised, that can happen, but it's best to correct it — as you've done. So all's well that ends well. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 13:50, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Recently you voted in the VfD debate on Richard Vanderpool (Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Richard Vanderpool). I recommend you take a second look at this, as the version of the article listed for deletion had been heavily vandalized. Thanks, Carnildo 23:46, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Max Payne

I only reverted because I felt saying "it's a nod to this, although it doesn't really qualify as that" read awful. It needed a rewrite and the best I could come up with (even though it is true) is that Finland was sometimes considered a part of Scandinavia. I don't know enough on the subject to say where this or that comes from, perhaps Sam Lake, the writer, isn't from Finland. I don't know. What you wrote seems fine, although I question whether or not it was a "nod to the Scandinavian heritage of the game's Finnish development company, Remedy Entertainment" in the first place. K1Bond007 02:20, Jun 17, 2005 (UTC)

Haha thanks for correcting it. I had no idea :) K1Bond007 02:36, Jun 17, 2005 (UTC)

Re: Batman.

Ha ha! No problem, Captain. --FuriousFreddy 16:51, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I think you are basically right, and the rest is in the details. Do you want to do the first separation, and the disambiguation page, and then I'll start giving some shape to the new article? I'll need lots of help, I am a bit of a Batman novice, though I have been doing queer studies work for a while now. Haiduc 02:02, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Please revisit AfD John Larney as it has been revised so it is now clean and much better written. It no longer says anything close to "THIS MAN HAS A SIGNIFICANCE!" Thank you for reconsidering your vote. JesusSaves 00:04, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

Neanderthal Theory of Autism AFD

You said:

Seriously? So if I come up with a theory -- for example, right now, my theory is that people don't always think the full implications of their statement through before making them, which I hereby dub the Theory of People Going Off Half-Cocked -- that means it's notable enough for inclusion? So if I were to actually create the article (or, for the sake of argument, got someone else to do it for me), that would automatically make it notable and a valid addition to Wikipedia, simply because someone thought it up and took the ten minutes to write it down?

The answer to that question, of course, is an emphatic yes. Not the answer you were hoping for--but then again, I'm perfectly consistent--and in fact, theories such as those are the exact type I have in mind when I'm stating the objective fact that every theory that exists deserves an article. Kurt Weber 23:41, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

Heh. I wasn't really hoping for anything, actually. Rather, I was attempting to make sure I understood you correctly. Fair enough; obviously, I very much disagree, but that's neither here nor there now. -- Captain Disdain 00:01, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

i rad my page debate on the speedy delete that was funny even if it did get deleted

i understand why it got deleted and junk, BUT i wasn't trying to host a roleplay or anything.

what i was trying to do was trying ot make sure we don't forget anything

we lost our last roleplay (we do this during school in a special notebook with a lock) so we kinda lost the key so we had to find a way to review everything so we did it all over again and made the wikipedia

lol

yep we do have more love power

Why was my note deleted?

Hello Captain Disdain,

This is Lukasz Krawczyk a.k.a. Luka, Wikipedia's absolute beginner. Why did you delete Natural Born Spitters at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBS? What was wrong? Could you let me know, please? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lukasz Krawczyk (talkcontribs) 21:59, 9 May 2006

Hello, Lukasz.
I hate to say this, but it's rather simple: I don't feel that Natural Born Spitters is a notable group, as evidenced by the fact that I also put the article itself up for deletion. I don't think it meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, especially as described in WP:MUSIC. Furthermore, you're promoting the band and blatantly doing so in a way that is very, very far from Neutral point of view, which is one of the most important rules we do things by over here. That in itself wouldn't be grounds for deletion, but in addition to the lack of notability, it doesn't really help, either.
I don't really know what more to tell you. But don't take it personally; you're new here, and that's cool. You've made a fairly common mistake, but don't worry about it; we like people to be bold. There's a lot to learn, sure, but you'll get the hang of it. -- Captain Disdain 22:44, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
Thank you very much Captain, I got it. You're absolutely right. Now I see my mistakes, and understand all your remarks, thanks. I need to respect Wikipedia's terms and conditions..so if you make a decision, and my article is supposed to be deleted/edited, I really don't mind it. Please do the right things. Peace out y'all... — Luka (Verbal Vets) 15:23, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
..However please don't get me wrong. Absolutely I don't want it to be deleted at all, but seems I do not have any other choice? Do I, anyway? — Luka (Verbal Vets) 08:05, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
I understand that you don't want it deleted, but you have to understand that the subject of the article really doesn't meed Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion. I sympathize, but there's really nothing I can do about it. Not every band and not every person is eligible for inclusion in Wikipedia. Of course, if you think that the subject of the article is notable enough, you can always make your argument for it in the AfD. If it turns out that you're right, it will be taken into account; people change their minds in AfDs all the time when someone makes a convincing argument for notability or importance. But honestly? I don't think you can pull it off in this case, because Natural Born Spitters just isn't an important group yet -- not to the world at large. The fact that you're involved with them makes them very important to you, and I respect that, but that also makes you biased. And please believe that I'm not saying that to be mean, I'm just saying that simply existing isn't enough to warrant inclusion in Wikipedia. It doesn't mean that Natural Born Spitters won't make it big in a year or two, but at that point, someone else will write the article about them. I realize that this probably isn't what you'd like to hear, but I'm not going to lie to you here -- I don't think there's a whole lot you can do about this. -- Captain Disdain 11:03, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Here comes the dumb, courtesy of some guy on the internet

Speaking of asses here's a joke my friend made up after reading this article. An Onager made an attempt to commit first degree murder, he was arrested before the murder occured. He was found guilty of premeditation and intent, however since the attempt failed the Judge ruled that the attempt was merely Half Ass and didn't warrant an extended prison term. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.192.39.243 (talkcontribs) 14:19, 11 May 2006

From one billionaire playboy/war hero/porn star/captain to another: maybe my joke was senseless, but I would also protect the right of others for a little sense of humor in talks and votes (within WP:CIV of course).   Yours, ←Humus sapiens ну? 01:14, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

No problem. I considered bringing the whole thing to your attention myself, but to be honest, I just very much wanted to see if Arniep would do it himself after (repeatedly) being asked to do so. Apparently that just wasn't an option for him, no matter what... not that I was terribly surprised by that or anything; I thought he wore his agenda pretty clearly on his sleeve there. -- Captain Disdain 21:39, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
Hi I'm sorry you've taken a hostile attitude to me. Humus admitted he intended it as a sick bigoted joke so I don't really feel inclined to converse with people with someone with that sort of attitude. My "agenda" is to bring to light the fact that many articles on the Palestinians are dominated by users who are Jewish and seem to have a pro Israeli viewpoint. If there were Serbs dominating articles on Albanians or neo nazis dominating editing of articles on Jews or Turks on Kurdish people, we should also be concerned about that. Regards Arniep 01:46, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
He most certainly did not admit that he intended it as a sick bigoted joke. He said he intended it as a joke. The "sick bigoted" bit is something you're coming up with all by yourself. -- Captain Disdain 02:00, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

David W Kidd

Hi, I note your comments regarding David W Kidd but I happen to be a fan of his lighting design. He is probably in the top 20 UK lighting designers having lit everygthing from major theatre, to stars such as Elton John and Montserrat Caballe. He is one of the 'old school' who came from permanent positions within theatres, moving into lighting design and not having studied the discipline at college. I believe his inclusion in Wikipedia is fair. His website is at www.davidwkidd.com if you would like to see more detail.

Notability

Thanks for your note. I think the nearly-costless nature of the storage and retrieval of information on Wikipedia precludes the need for a significant threshold on notability; the real threshold somes from verifiability. snug 20:54, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Shane Shramrock

I got this from Wrestling Obituaries, "August 17, 1998 Shane Shamrock Shot by Police 23", and looked it up in other magazines, and they all said the same thing. Here's anothe from Obsessed with Wrestling. "

  1. Shane Shamrock was the first ever Maryland Championship Wrestling Light-Heayweight champion..
  2. 72.196.19.168He defeated Mark Shrader,Christian York, Joey Matthews, Earl the Pearl, and Quinn Nash in a Six Way Dance..
  3. 72.196.19.168The match was voted "match of the year" by MCW fans in 1998..
  4. August 18th, 1998: Brian Stephen Howser was viciously shot and killed by the police - RIP..
  5. Brian was 23 years old.Survived by his parents, George and Sharon Howser, and his 3 children, Berkleigh, Brady, and Emily.." That's what I based my editing from.
All right, fair enough! My bad; I admit that I jumped the gun on that one; going from "died in an automobile accident" to "a hail of bullets" just seemed way too outrageous to be a good faith edit based on facts. I'll fix the article accordingly (although I'm going to rephrase "hail of bullets" to something a little less dramatic, especially as we don't know if he was just shot once or repeatedly. My apologies. I will also remove the vandalism warning from your talk page. -- Captain Disdain 14:09, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Uh, well, no offense intended, but you got suckered. That is a pretty obvious hoax, not an actual Satchmo recording. Just listen to it; sure, it's a funny gag, but c'mon; the crappy mp3 compression quality alone is kind of obviously there just to make sure that no one can tell too well what's what. If nothing else, the people credited with creating the song -- that would be Max Martin and Rami weren't even alive back when the Satchmo version was supposedly recorded. What, they were lying when they said it was their song, now? In any case, even if it did turn out to be true, just slapping the change into the article without real, verifiable information (one website doesn't quite do it, I'm afraid) stinks of original research, which is a big no-no on Wikipedia. We need verifiable and credible sources.
Damn funny joke, though, I'll give them that. I cracked up. =) -- Captain Disdain 00:52, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

It's restored (although you could have done that yourself -- see Help:Reverting for instructions on how to do that). Water Rockets

I see that you have exercised your editorial perogative in the past on the Water Rocket page and wanted to ask advice in that respect. I have, on more than one occasion, added data to that page in an attempt to clarify some of the misinformation being presented. On each occasion, the original contributors have deleted that data since it did not agree with their opinions. In addition, legitimate URLs linking to a long-standing public forum and a representative organisation have been deleted by the same people who claim to be both the governing body for record attempts, and the current world record holders.

Perhaps I did wrong to raise an objection directly on a Wikipedia page, in which case there must be a better way to do this. I guess I need to know if there is some form of mechanism for ensuring that Wikipedia pages are not used as personal promotional material, and promote unsubstantiated claims, whilst purporting to represent the "community" they discuss. I would rewrite the pages to correct the misinformation if I believed that my efforts would not just be deleted immediately by the same people. —The preceding comment was added by Radiotrib (talkcontribs) 19:10, 5 March 2007 (UTC).

Dalek Variants.

Hello, I recently received a message from you informing me I had vandalised a page known as Dalek Variants. I believe you are mis-informed, and should be aware that my ip-provider assigns a rotating ip-address to ALL it's customers...

Upon re-inspection of the message, I have noticed that you actually sent this message on 18th June 2006, here is a copy of the message:
"Please stop. If you continue to vandalize pages, as you did to Dalek variants, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. A link to the edit I have reverted can be found here: link. If you believe this edit should not have been reverted, please contact me. Captain Disdain 17:57, 18 June 2006 (UTC)"
Just to clarify, I personally have never changed the contents of the page in question. It's no big deal, I just felt you might like to know that because of my IP-providers policy, the actual Vandal probably never received any message.
Cheers.
 Dan.

Fair use rationale for Image:BatmanAnimated cover.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:BatmanAnimated cover.jpg. You've indicated that the image meets Wikipedia's criteria for non-free content, but there is no explanation of why it meets those criteria. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. If you have any questions, please post them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions.

Thank you for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 22:29, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Concrete - Strange Armor TPB Cover.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Concrete - Strange Armor TPB Cover.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 08:23, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Re:Parachuting

Hi. Currently I have this book that discusses the only person to survive parachuting from the top of a thounderstorm at 40,000 ft: Lt. Col. William Rankin. Should I write an article about him, or expand the parachuting article with the information, or both? His 40-minute journey through the thunderstorm was not only difficult because he had to parachute through fierce winds, lightning, and hail: when he ejected from his plane, the air above was so low it caused his abdomen to inflate tremendously, and to bleed from his eyes and other parts of his face. Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 17:20, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Taking a break? Or is it just a Refdesk break? Zain Ebrahim (talk) 18:07, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Oh, not really -- I just didn't get around to really using Wikipedia for some reason, as I was distracted by other things. It probably doesn't qualify as a break, or at least I didn't make a conscious decision to take a break. =) -- Captain Disdain (talk) 12:44, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Frontline Records being re launched

Hi,

I am James Michael Kempner II, Jim Kempner's son, and just read that you heard I was restarting it, interesting to find out how you got my friends name Josh Chronley in the mix of all of it. I was thinking of bringing back the name, since I do work in the music industry. Curious to hear how you heard all of it, my email is JamesKempner2@gmail.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.5.180.58 (talk) 03:38, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

I didn't get his name into anything. His name -- and yours -- along with some other material was added into the Frontline Records article in October, 2005, but I removed it, as the claims were entirely unreferenced, and left a note about that on the article's talk page -- which is probably what you're referring to. I have no knowledge about any of this beyond that, and really, it took me a while to even understand that what you wrote above had any connection to me at all, since this whole non-event took place almost three years ago. The person who had heard about it was the person who added the information that I removed -- he used the IP address of 70.181.66.55, but I couldn't tell you anything else about any of this. -- Captain Disdain (talk) 12:42, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Re: Your recent edits message

I think it's about time you issued me an apology, assuming you can muster it. Next time you deserve a trout in the face for questioning someone's intentions, I'll expect you'll take it with dignity instead of making personal attacks. 86.159.56.251 (talk) 12:09, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Your edit history doesn't show any edits that I have any involvement with. Would you care to be more specific? -- Captain Disdain (talk) 13:10, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Sorry Captain Disdain, I've got the wrong person, it was the other captain I was looking for. My Ip is dynamic and changes about twice per day, so not all of my edits show up in my history. Anyway, sorry for the mistaken identity. Happy editing! 86.159.56.251 (talk) 14:25, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Wait a sec!!!

Please make sure to be just a bit friendlier on Wikipedia, okay? You are one person who lacks what we call sympathy. If you don't agree, don't argue. For reference see what you wrote. 117.194.226.216 (talk) 14:05, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Are you perhaps referring to this edit of mine? How is that unfriendly or unsympathetic? Fetishes and other kinks are completely commonplace and in no way bad. -- Captain Disdain (talk) 14:10, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Okay, okay..... No offence meant. I hope this makes up for the previous comment.

Waffling

Hi CD, didn't want to clutter the refdesk with it, but anecdote time (dingg!) since you're maybe going to start a new life in a new country (ahem) but I met an old man who changed his life through the benefits of getting stuck in Sweden sometime when young. He took advantage of studying architecture and the welfare system there -- it helped him to become a multilingual career architect, so you never know... ;-) Julia Rossi (talk) 05:09, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Supersonic dog = awesome

Hey there. You don't know me, but I was lurking on the Science reference desk today and I saw your posts in response to the question about "talking / supersonic" dogs. Userpage vandalism

Hi. Just to let you know, I have reverted vandalism and personal attacks to your userpage, because I saw it from my watchlist. Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 16:28, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks! Guess I pissed someone off. What a tragedy! -- Captain Disdain (talk) 16:35, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
FYI - the anon IP who trashed your user: page is almost certainly User:Earthan Philosopher. Take a look at the edit history of User:99.140.56.150 and User:Earthan Philosopher and you'll note that they edited each other's user pages - and notably, the edit that 99.140.56.150 did to Earthian Philosopher's user page appears to fit in precisely with the arcane stuff that EP is doing for himself. Since EP had had a run-in with you just before...draw your own conclusions. SteveBaker (talk) 02:56, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I wouldn't exactly be shocked to find that to be the case. Whatever turns his wacky crank, I guess. Thanks for the heads-up! -- Captain Disdain (talk)
User:Earthan Philosopher has agreed to be adopted by me under the "Adopt-A-User" program - I'm going to help work with Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Perhaps you'd be prepared to forgive this little slip up under the circumstances. I'm going to be watching Earthan's edit history for a few weeks - checking to see if there is advice that can be given. SteveBaker (talk) 19:47, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh, it's cool with me; it's not as if I was going to make a thing of it anyway. Frankly, I kind of expected him to make a bit of a spectacle of himself and eventually either get with the program or get banned... but really, I'm glad to see that you're giving him another option. I hope that works out for you guys. The user adoption scheme generally strikes me as a pretty good idea, though I'm really not sure that I'd have the gumption for that. -- Captain Disdain (talk) 21:49, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Oh, hey, my pleasure. So it's cool! -- Captain Disdain (talk) 13:29, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Hello. Question?

Do you mind if a have any more questions about this and my fiance if I ask you? you seem to know alot about it.... --Chaela <3 (talk) 14:00, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Go right ahead, I'll be glad to help if I can. I should probably say right up front that I'm probably not going to be any good as a couples counselor or anything like that, just so that you don't get the wrong idea. But I do know about this stuff, so sure, if you have questions, go ahead and ask. -- Captain Disdain (talk) 14:06, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
dont worry our relationship is fine. I just want to be all I can for him. I dont want to upset him with my insecurity. He doesnt want to talk about sex like i do, with us being apart. I get more aroused now that hes gone and it feels wrong to think so hardcore when hes not with me. Somtimes ill talk about it and hell tell me im making him mad but hell go quiet to listen and then when i ask if hes there hell sound defeated and tell me he has to go. I think he may believe that phone sex is childish but im prude again being away from him and need to express you know? should i give him a break or try and pick my self apart alone? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Chaela89 (talkcontribs) 14:15, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Well, look, the first requirement for any successful relationship -- and this is actually kinda getting into that couples counseling area I'm not comfortable in -- is communication. Even if you have a completely vanilla relationship, that's going to be the key to working out how to be together and feel good about it, you know? But when it comes to BDSM, communication becomes vital. Unless you both know what you want and what you don't want, it's not going to work for you. You can't be dominated unless the other person knows how you need to be handled, and you can't dominate someone properly unless you know what the other person needs. I mean, you can go through the motions, but if it's not pressing the right buttons, it's not going to do the trick. The only way you can work this out is if you sit down and just bite the bullet and talk it out. You don't have to do it all in one go, and you don't need to make up your minds on the spot. Just as importantly, you're allowed to change your minds about the specifics of your needs as you learn more. Now, if you've got someone you really, honestly trust, and have reason to trust, and you can work these things out with him, that's good. But you can't do it by phone, and you can't do it if the other person is unwilling to commit to the discussion. Hell, it may even be that you just need to think this whole thing through and try and figure out what works for you, if only in theory, before you actually try any of this out. This kind of thing can be a little embarrassing for everyone concerned, so both of you probably need a while to adjust. But if this is what you -- either just you or both of you -- need, I don't think you can afford to be in denial about it. You can't just pretend that it's not there, you know? That way lies depression and bitterness. -- Captain Disdain (talk) 22:02, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
