Pronunciations

Hello! Please be careful when you add or correct pronunciation transcriptions such as the one at County Donegal and Donegal (town). In this case, you used /i/, which represents variation between [ɪ] and [iː], but the oscillation in pronunciation is actually between [ə] and [ɪ], so /ɪ/ should be used instead. Would you have any resources for detailed and precise IPA transcription or any tips in general? It seems to get exponentially more difficult the deeper one dives. Grazie mille! Caden Ó Cearrúláin (talk) 19:53, 27 August 2019 (UTC)

Online resources I consult for English pronunciations of placenames are Longman Dictionary, Oxford Dictionaries, Collins English Dictionary, Merriam-Webster Dictionary and American Heritage Dictionary, though, except the first two, they are not completely safe for placenames in non-English-speaking countries, as they report prescriptive pronunciations that may not be common or even possible in English. They should be fine for Irish placenames, though. :) Watch out for the differences between British (/Commonwealth) English and North American English, and remind the latter two dictionaries (and Oxford too, when transcribing NAmE) use different systems from IPA. Oh, and of course there are print dictionaries that are even more reliable, but unfortunately I have none so I settle to what I can find. イヴァンスクルージ九十八_（会話） 20:07, 27 August 2019 (UTC)

Another thing: don’t forget English transcriptions on Wikipedia are diaphonemic, meaning they try to be the most dialect-neutral possible. So when an American dictionary reports e.g. /ɑ(ː)/ you should check if it is actually a realization of /ɒ/, and so on. イヴァンスクルージ九十八_（会話） 20:12, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
