Question about photo rights

Hello! I am one of Hoopes' students and have been trying to improve my entry by adding photos. I obtained permission from the copyright holders to post their entries on Wikipedia, however one of my photos was deleted anyway. I'm not sure if I just posted it incorrectly or if I didn't meet the requirements of Wikipedia. If you could give me a little guidance I would appreciate it! Thanks! Phoenixone (talk) 18:33, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi there phoenixone, have responded at your talkpg here. Let me know if that does the trick, all the best --cjllw ʘ TALK 08:22, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your help!! I have emailed the permissions desk and am awaiting their reply. Phoenixone (talk) 23:40, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Can you identify & place these images on Commons

Dear Admin CJLL Wright, I stumbled upon this set of flickr images: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamidwyer/sets/72157606952714490/?page=2 (page 2 here on display) Its a huge set of images from page 2-4 from a museum that I don't know to pages 6-14 which are from the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. I would say the images from the Nat'l Museum of Anthropology are of superior quality. Since you have a Commons account, do you think you have the time to upload these badly needed flickr images onto Commons (once you identify them) I apologise but I am not a member of the Mesoamerica project and haven't a clue what they are. The flickr owner (Ms Jami) licenses her pages and pages of images freely as she says in her profile: [1] I have the impression that Wikipedia is badly in need of many of these images. Please note that to upload these flickr images on Commons, the image license for her images is "Attribution-Share-Alike Creative Commons" ( or 'cc by sa 2.0') This license has no restrictions on their use and can certainly be placed on Commons. This is one image from flickr which I placed on Commons with this license: Image:Temple of Taffeh in Leiden by Paul Garland.jpg Good luck.

  • PS:I have uploaded many flickr images onto Commons but my expertise is Canadian history and Egyptology...not Mesoamerica. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:20, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Hi Leoboudv, thanks for the message and bringing attention to those. I'll take a look through them at some point (in next few days or so, if I can) and see whether there are identifiable and usable imgs among those. Without identification they'll be much less useful.
The flickr uploader's username is familiar, I guess this is the same one as a contributor that used to be around on wiki, Jamidwyer (talk · contribs), who uploaded a bunch of similarly themed imgs. IIRC, a few of their uploads got deleted while others survive, and the editor stopped uploading & perhaps got a little miffed at wikipedia's processes & experience. I don't recall the exact circumstances of the img deletions, whether they were duplicates, unlabeled/unused, or their licensing status wasn't made clear. Might hv to look into it a little more to see if there was any other affecting issue. Regards --cjllw ʘ TALK 12:50, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Pardon me of jumping in here. You are correct, CJLL. Jami had uploaded a number of images, some quite excellent including the skull still adorning the Monte Alban article (albeit in a gallery). She tried to shoehorn a couple of the less-optimal images into an article and was miffed when her inserts were reverted. I am glad to see that she got married, and is still taking photos.
There are a lot of photos there but we can certainly make use of a number of them: there's a photo of La Venta Offering 4, a close-up of a feathered serpent head from Teotihuacan, and another shot of San Lorenzo Monument 52. In fact, the more I look, the more I see that this is a potential gold mine. CJLL is (W)right, however, in that there are few descriptions available, so you have to know what you're looking at.
In any case, thanks for alerting us, Leoboudv. By the way, I also recently used your upload of San Lorenzo Monument 52 in the were-jaguar article and I edited the Commons description to more fully describe the sculpture. Madman (talk) 13:39, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
  • May I wish you all the best of luck Madman and CJLL Wright in uploading them on Commons. Her web page here is worth bookmarking! I honestly could never upload her images since she left the descriptions blank. I only upload things I can identify like this today Image:Chac Mool statue, from Chichen Itza by Ewen Roberts.jpg by a separate flickr owner. If you check the original flickr source, the person gave a very detailed description (although in this case the license is slightly different: 'Attribution Creative Commons') I can only say this: the images from page 6-14 of Jami's Mexico museum set is volumnious and the image quality is overall quite good.
  • One Observation: J Dwyer stopped contributing to WP in May 2007 whereas these images are from mid-2008 so theoretically they would not be on Commons, I think. Please note that once a flickr image is passed by the flickr bot, it is now on Commons for life (as long as it isn't copyrighted or a derivative as a Commons Admin told me) even if the original flickr link goes dead in a few yrs time. That is why I place all my uploaded flickr pictures for flickrbot review. Its a pity there are no such gold mines for Egyptology which is my specialty...but such is life. Cheers, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:59, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Jami is a very good photographer. Her images are well lit (given the circumstances), her subjects are centered and in focus.
I have already uploaded two, and one is now gracing the Feathered Serpent article. The other, Image:La Venta Offering 4 (Jami Dwyer).jpg‎, needs some work to remove the glare and reflection of the surrounding glass case (a common and frustrating problem with museum pics). I was also able to better identify another Commons image uploaded earlier.
I must say (proudly) that many Wikipedia articles are quite well illustrated, as good as many books. Thanks again for helping with this, Madman (talk) 20:32, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Ok, thanks guys. Yes, good to hv these visual resources, and even better when they are properly identified. Maybe the museum has some online catalogue somewhere, tho' I doubt it. There might be a couple of art/exhibition books or catalogues around that cld assist in identifying some of the unlabelled imgs. --cjllw ʘ TALK 23:41, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
  • Dear CJLL or Madman, I legally uploaded this image from a separate flickr owner (I have already uploaded most of his images on flickr to Commons): Image:Gold Poporo Quimbaya lime container2007.jpg Please feel free to make use of it on a WP article...as it has been now been passed. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:22, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Leoboudv. I've added it to the poporo article as an example of this type of Andean artefact, cld possibly also be added to Quimbaya tho' there's already a couple there. There's also a separate Poporo Quimbaya article that appears to be on a particular artefact of this type; since I'm less familiar with Andean civilizations dunno whether this works or the article shld be expanded to be on the class of artefacts, rather than a single example.
If you come across and upload any more that you'd bring to WikiProject Mesoamerica's attention, suggest you drop a line at the project's communal noticeboard at WT:MESO for wider exposure, that way might be a better chance for someone recognising and identifying. All the best, --cjllw ʘ TALK 22:59, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Cite journal template changes

Per issues you raised, please consider commented at Template_talk:Cite_journal#Punctuation. --Karnesky (talk) 06:13, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

k, thanks Karnesky. Have made some further comments there. Regards --cjllw ʘ TALK 22:44, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Yuri Knorozov

I'm planning to delist this article, as it has no inline citations. There are a lot of general sources, but all print, so citations might require a lot of work. You seem to be the biggest recent contributor, so if you disagree or plan to do the improvmetns soon, then let me know, and i'll wait. thanks.

Yuri Knorozov has been nominated for a good article reassessment. Articles are typically reviewed for one week. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to good article quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, the good article status will be removed from the article. Reviewers' concerns are here.Yobmod (talk) 10:32, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Thx. Have responded at the GA review subpg. --cjllw ʘ TALK 00:29, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Could you add your thoughts at Kulkulkan??

There is an incipient edit war brewing at Kulkulkan? Could you, as Mesoamerican Great Kahuna, please add your thoughts? Thanks, Madman (talk) 12:39, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey Madman. Got confused there for a minute. I'd always thought that it had been just a simple redirect to Quetzalcoatl, but after a double-take I see now there's been a separate kukulkan out there all along (and it's kulkulkan with the extra 'l' that redirects to Q's article).
I wasn't sure about the utility of having kukulkan as a separate article, but thinking more about it I suppose we cld try retaining it as somewhere to expand on postclassic yucatan uses & mentions, while the remainder of generic Maya 'feathered serpent' concepts is farmed out to the related appropriate ones.
Looks like the 'edit war' is receding, tho' I agree with you of course that those refs supplied are v poor ones. Will patch in a few more decent ones and maybe trim down the apocryphal-tour guide elements. Cheers, --cjllw ʘ TALK 00:38, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Olmec category

Well fine, but please be sure to add all the relevant individual articles. Johnbod (talk) 22:54, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

No worries, I guess we've now accumulated several articles on Olmec art topics anyways, so this can be a prompt to create Category:Olmec art; shall do so & parent it to Precol art cat. Cheers, --cjllw ʘ TALK 22:57, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
Great, but a horizontal one may be best, as art articles usually need the side space for pictures. Johnbod (talk) 22:59, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
OK, the category's now created & populated with some relevant articles. I'm probably being dense here, but not sure what was meant by 'horizontal'..? Regards, --cjllw ʘ TALK 23:12, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
My misunderstanding, I thought you were going to do a template not a category (which is best)! Do keep an eyc out for art cats etc, as none of the Visual arts people know much about pre-columbian stuff, where we are sadly short of articles. Thanks again. More Morley

Hi there, I added a couple of details about the end of Morley's life. You or one of the other editors asked for a citation on the last sentence. I added a couple of sources on how Morley was in Yucatan in 1948. I do not have a source on the fact that Morley is buried in Fairview Cemetery, and his wife died in 1955. But I can get a photograph of their graves. I have been there many times, and pass by the cemetery everyday on the way to work.

I have found Morley's Masonic records. It may not be relevant to the wiki article, but he was made a mason in Montezuma Lodge #1 Santa Fe, NM, in 1912. Then he did the Scottish Rite degrees up to 32nd, that same year.

I have had some e-mails with his grand nephews. There are interested in their grand uncle Vay. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kvillela (talkcontribs) 01:22, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Hey thanks Kvillela. Those additions look good! No real urgency to find a cite for his burial place, it wld be a nice-to-have for completeness but as it's a minor and presumably uncontroversial matter I think it could wait if it had to.
Think it shld be OK to have a passing mention of his masonic associations in the article, as just another piece of the overall biog.
Since we last chatted I'd expanded a little bit more in his early life and studies section, from some other material I came by. Would like to do a little more on his early work at the Pueblo sites, significant if for no other reason than the fieldwork was apparently the first under auspices of the newly-formed SAA org.
I guess the new edn of Gale's encyclopedia with your chapter on Morley in it, has come out by now, at least I can see it in OCLC catalogues.
Yes, I recall discussing with those Morley relatives, I believe Jimjomac (talk · contribs) was one of them who signed on a wikipedia account and we had some exchanges in the past. They were going to do some more genealogical digging around, wonder if they came up w anything new...
Thanks again, and all the best, (reply posted also to ur talkpg) --cjllw ʘ TALK 04:18, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
