Blocked

edit

Happy to review the text entered, but unable to edit - or talk - as I'm blocked (an apparently an issue with my username too?!) I didn't think my text was promotional at all. Used 'Lowestoft Sixth Form' wiki page as my example and don't feel my content was really any different from theirs, please advise as we would like this page up to date and running. Thanks. BungayHigh (talk) 17:59, 7 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Your account was blocked for a combination of promotional edits and a username which does not comply with policy. Wikipedia usernames are required to represent you as an individual, not an organization. Only one person is allowed to use an account. For that reason, usernames which give the impression that they're associated with an entire organization or group are disallowed. This is fully explained in the block notice below. If you wish to request unblock, I'd direct your attention to the following instructions from your block notice:

If you do intend to make useful contributions here about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
    • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
    • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.

Speedy deletion nomination of Bungay Sixth Form

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Bungay Sixth Form, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. -©2015 Compassionate727(Talk)(Contributions) 17:18, 7 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes. If you intend to edit constructively in other topic areas, you may be granted the right to continue under a change of username. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, website or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not, although if you can demonstrate a pattern of future editing in strict accordance with our neutral point of view policy, you may be granted this right. See Wikipedia's FAQ for Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you may consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. Peridon (talk) 17:33, 7 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

This user's request to be unblocked to request a change in username has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without a good reason (see the blocking policy). Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Next time read the instructions for filing a reasonable block request. If you continue to make spurious unblock requests, your talk page access will be revoked. OhNoitsJamie Talk 19:23, 7 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
@BungayHigh: I'd recommend that you re-read your block notice any my message above before this request is reviewed by an administrator. Again, you need to provide a valid new username that you wish to use, since your username is a violation of policy. Also, you need to convince the administrator that you're going to make positive contributions in the future by explaining what other types of non-promotional editing you plan to engage in. Simply stating "I cannot edit/re-write text as blocked" won't be sufficient, since that's the intended consequence of you being blocked. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 19:08, 7 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

BungayHigh (talk) 19:49, 9 October 2015 (UTC) Had already written the text below on my page. I don't find Wiki user friendly for new users, so apologies for not reading all the vast amounts of text and instructions thoroughly first, but I had written this text for each section, therefore "I cannot edit/re-write text as blocked" was merely summarising what I had already written. "Happy to review the text entered, but unable to edit as blocked (an apparently an issue with my username?!) I didn't think it was promotional at all. Used 'Lowestoft Sixth Form' wiki page as my example and don't feel my content was really any different from theirs, please advise as we would like this page up to date and running. Thanks"Reply

Wikipedia is friendly if you listen and take advice. If you are being told something looks promotional by an experienced editor, you should at least consider that they might be right. The Lowestoft article was not a good one to take as a model, because it is tagged for looking like an advertisement. Yours was deleted for being excessively promotional. Be advised that there is no right to have a page on Wikipedia. To have one, notability WP:GNG must be shown, and referenced with reliable independent sources WP:RS. The article must be written in a neutral style - see a few articles that are not tagged at the top for looking promotional. You cannot edit using a name that appears to be that of an organisation - see WP:USERNAME. If you haven't got the time to read these policies, there's no point in you trying to edit. A couple of things: when you post on a talk page. put the signature at the end, and to indent a post (like I've done), type a : at the start. To follow on from my post, you would need :: and so on. Stick to comments and questions until we're sure you understand what we're telling you. Do read the big sandy coloured box again. It tells you a lot. Peridon (talk) 21:35, 9 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

BungayHigh (talk) 18:41, 19 October 2015 (UTC) Thanks for the advice but I'll leave it as I don't have time to read through it all. Shame, as it does seem like double standards, as the editor for Lowestoft Sixth Form has the username of SixthForm which is accepted and the material has been tagged as being promotional, yet still hasn't been removed.Reply

It's a shame you don't have the time to do that. Thank you, by the way, for pointing out the article on Lowestoft Sixth Form. I agree that it's incredibly promotional and is exactly the sort of thing I dislike in Wikipedia articles. I'm about to take my green pen to it (we don't use red these days - too negative or some bs) and take it to pieces over anything that isn't third party referenced. For what it's worth you could have done that. Blue Square Thing (talk) 19:25, 17 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Not a good idea for someone with the name of one high school to edit the article of another school - could easily be regarded as vandalism or COI even though perhaps needed... Peridon (talk) 20:01, 17 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Oh, certainly needed. And now more or less fixed with some cn tags to wait on. I'd have hoped after a change of user name mind you. That was clearly needed - and the point about the main promo contributor to the Lowestoft article isn't unreasonable. Blue Square Thing (talk) 20:21, 17 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
