Hi there Bryndlefly, I see that you created two near identical articles for Pukeiti:

• Pukeiti, New Zealand (it has subsequently been moved), and
• Pukeiti (Auckland)

Matakarua edits

Tena Koe,

I read the article you've created thus far for "Matakarua", and was wondering if you wouldn't mind moving it to "Matukutureia".

I believe "Matakarua" is a misspelling (albeit a not single case one) of the word referring to both Wiri and McLaughlin's Mountains - "Matukurua". I've been doing a fair amount of personal research on the sites of Matukutureia and Matukutururu. I'd never encountered until now the Matakarua spelling being used instead of Matukurua, although I looked it up to find there's a few things that use it.

Here's some examples of key places that use the Matukurua spelling I'm informing you of:

Maori Dictionary- maoridictionary.com

The Manurewa Marae itself- http://www.justonline.co.nz/~manurewa/index.php?page=a-tale-of-manurewa

The Manukau City Councils website - http://www.manukau-libraries.govt.nz/EN/ManukauOurHistory/ManukauTopics/Pages/AhistoryofManukauCityCentrepagetwo.aspx#id2

The book "A History of Manurewa to 1965" by Gwen Wichman (Probably by far the most comprehensive Manurewa history book around).

Also, something that will back this up further, is that if you look up simply "Matuku" on the Maori dictionary website, you'll find it can mean the bird "bittern (also heron)". Obviously Rua means two, and thus the explanation of the "two bitterns" name origin stories make sense. If you search up "Mataka" on the Maori dictionary you'll find nothing at all.

Of course even though it should be Matukurua rather than Matakarua, I suggested you move it to something different - "Matukutureia", which is actually correctly listed as a name for McLaughlin's in your current article. This is because as I've lightly touched on previously, generally speaking Matukurua is the name for BOTH Matukutureia and Matukutururu, and thus, as your article (appropriately I might add) refers only to Matukutureia (and your other article already correctly refers to Matukutururu), it is obviously more appropriate to simply name the article Matukutureia. The term Matukurua I believe can simply be put into each article discussing how it refers to both of them together.

Sorry for the blather, I will indeed expand on your articles myself with what I know, once the move to Matukutureia is made. :)

I know what you mean, to be honest, there's a lot of confusing misspellings and alternate spellings around(especially from older times). I suppose this is merely the most likely scenario based off what we would hope are the most reliable sources and the most widespread usages. Woops I also forgot, can you possibly change the filename of your image for Matukutureia too? Picky I know haha. Your picture is quite a good one so I don't want to just replace. I can always add some of mine as a kind of gallery. :)

Why thank you, I changed the Matukutureia one now also. I actually got the code from the One Tree Hill article, as it's obviously related and looked flash :P The wiki commons name change worked though so that's good. One question though, just curious, do you have a personal interest in Auckland geography or is there something more? Not really, just interested in Auckland's volcanoes as a hobby. I'd noticed Wikipedia didn't have much detailed info on them, and i had a good reference book about them so i started contributing bits and pieces. anyway, enjoy your wiki-ing Bryndlefly (talk) 04:42, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Pukewairiki circular feature

Hi B, Thanks for your correspondence. I do not know the circular feature you talk about, but would like to see it. Maybe you can show me sometime. If you are in Auckland and interested in volcanoes and geology, maybe you would like to come along to some of our Geology Club talks and trips (see web site for info). I am leading one next Sunday morning to the additional volcanoes we have recognised and also to Cemetery Crater. GThanks for all the good stuff you have done with the volcanoes on Wikipedia. Hope you do not mind me bringing some things up to date. The Maori names I have added are those that Graeme Murdoch - Maori historian considers the most appropriate - as you know some have several alternatives. Is the circular feature exposed at low tide?

Hi, thanks for the quick reply, i've only seen the rock feature in aerial photos, it's exposed at low tide, i'm not sure how deep the mud around it is though! I'd certainly be interested in coming along to some club talks and trips (not sure if i can make it this weekend though). Update and correct the wikipedia articles as much as you want. I kept the articles i started pretty minimal as i'm not an expert. And there's obviously been loads of research in the decades since the book i used as a reference was published. cheers Bryndlefly (talk) 19:03, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
