1993 Sauber engines

Hi Bluebird207. I have reverted the places where you changed "Sauber" to "Sauber-Ilmor" in the 1993 F1 race report articles. WP:F1 convention is that the engines were badged as "Sauber"s. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 09:06, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Debunking a myth about skipped plates.

Remember when you disputed about certain plates being skipped? Well, my cousin has one the prefixs that the fansites claim were skipped. I've uploaded the picture of the sticker on Photobucket since I don't want to put a personal sticker on wikipedia. 2010 Toyota Camry, plate number FCC-4516 –BuickCenturyDriver 12:23, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Why does it need to be stated that's it's a ex First bus? This is not a bus enthusiast site, the H in Alexander Dennis EnviroE400H stands for hybrid so there no reason to say it's a hybrid. List of South Park episodes

WP:OVERLINK says do not link the names of major geographic features and locations so it's completely irrelevant whether the IP knew about WP:OVERLINK when he/she removed the link. Nor is it relevant that the link had been present for 3 years. Errors creep into articles and can be overlooked for years; I've personally fixed errors that have existed since 2006. I should explain here.

When I saw that 77.97.214.147 had removed the link without giving an explanation, I genuinely believed that this was an act of vandalism, given many of the other edits that he/she had made. And that's why I restored the link.

When you re-removed the link (so to speak), I have to admit that I was a bit thrown by the wording of your explanation, for several reasons: the link had been present for so long; I was not the person who had originally added it; and - to be perfectly honest - I hadn't, and still haven't, got my head around all of the rules as regards linking, even after six years of being a Wikipedian. These in addition to my belief as regards the nature of 77.97.214.147's edit. And that's probably why I said, "I have to disagree".

But now that you've made it clear that it was an error, and that errors can be overlooked for even longer than three years, I don't disagree at all. And I'm willing to admit, too, that on this occasion 77.97.214.147 was actually right - even if, as seems likely, he/she didn't realise it.

I shall remove the link once and for all. And I apologise if I've wasted your time.

It's very easy - all you have to do is put your summary into the text box that has "Edit summary" above it. Your summary cannot be longer than 250 characters, however.

Also, don't forget to preview your changes by clicking the "Show preview" button. Then, if you see that you have made mistakes or have forgotten to put things in, you can make the desired corrections, and then click the "Save page" button - thus saving you from having to make multiple edits all at once.

Hi, I noticed that you recently reverted the IP's edit(s) on thei talk page. Per WP:REMOVED, "Policy does not prohibit users, whether registered or unregistered users, from removing comments from their own talk pages, although archiving is preferred. The removal of material from a user page is normally taken to mean that the user has read and is aware of its contents. There is no need to keep them on display and usually users should not be forced to do so.". Per WP:OWNTALK, "Although archiving is preferred, users may freely remove comments from their own talk pages. Users may also remove some conten". Knoxville, Tennessee, US vandal

Hi Bluebird! I understand your frustrations with this guy. Short story, it's an IP-hopping editor who is clearly a vandal. In my experience, when you notice editors using the name of the article as their edit summary, that's often a tip-off that they're trying to escape scrutiny, perhaps from the anti-vandal bots, or that otherwise they're only here to disrupt. What would be helpful, I think, (if you were so inclined) would be if you could place some indication in your edit summary of where the disruptive user is coming from like I do in this edit where I write, "Unsourced. Tag: Knoxville, Tennessee, US; ISP: AT&T" You don't have to be that formal or complete, but even if you were to say, "Disruptive and questionable content from AA city in BB state, USA" or whatever, it would make it easier for other editors to ask for page protection, because we could just point to the edit history and say, "Page needs semi-protection, please note the IP hopping from Knoxville over the last month." The quick way to figure out where an IP is located is to go to their contributions page and click "Geolocate" at the bottom. In this case you'd be taken here. Removal of dead links

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Dead_link according to the dead link article "Avoid using this template when the reference is fully adequate without the link. In this case, simply remove the link." The style recommendation is that dead links should be removed. QuentinUK (talk) 08:23, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Template:Dead link also says, "It is often useful to make a search for an archive copy of the dead link".

I've done just that, and found copies of the two dead links from Fleetdata.co.uk.

Next time you encounter a dead link in a reference, I think you should search for an archive copy first, before you consider removing part or all of the reference altogether. The Internet Archive Wayback Machine is good for making such searches.

Reliable sources

Hi! I'm not sure if your aware, but Wikipedia has policies in place regarding what can and can't be used to source an article. Everything you need is at WP:RS. In short, self published personal websites are not considered to be a reliable source for articles. Please find a reliable source for that claim rather than introducing unreliable sources. Thanks! Well, I have now re-used one of the archived sources on Vehicle registration plates of the United Kingdom, Crown dependencies and overseas territories - which also mentions the big registration re-organisation as taking place in October 1974, and codes like CF being transferred to new areas at the same time.

And I'm pretty sure that the site from which this archived source comes from was not a self-published personal website - it was the site of the Road Transport Fleet Data Society, based in Biggleswade.

Hope the issue is now cleared up.

Ohio License Plates page

I noticed your revision to the recent page (12-16-15). From my review of the page it appears that Ohio is issuing about 11,000 different plates per month. I am trying to time this because I am looking for a plate fairly low in the GYM XXXX series. The Ohio BMV has no idea when the plates will be issued and I have been calling them about every two months to see how far along they are in issuing the series.

Do you have a formula for guessing when the GYM XXXX series may be issued? I am guessing February or March of 2017. Is that reasonable in your estimation?

TBH, I'm not sure I could guess when the GYM series will be issued.

Don't forget, the serials are allocated in blocks to each county. It's very possible for one county to start issuing the serials from a higher block while other counties are still issuing the serials from lower blocks.

Yes, I am aware of that. Some of the larger counties go through plates much faster than the small ones. Some larger counties have numerous sales outlets with various series available at the same time. I call the BMV occasionally and they are helpful by telling me what is being issued and where its being sold. I just do not want to bother them too much. I realize timing this will be difficult and fun.

No 'I' series. HZZ-9999 was followed by JAA-1000 and up.

Clearly, that clarification I made did *not* stop that Australian IP hopper from re-adding that particular bit of information.

It really does seem to me at this stage that *nothing* will make him/her change his/her ways. (S)he could be repeatedly warned and blocked; all the suggestions in the world could be made to him/her; clarifications could be made in the articles concerned that make his/her edits completely redundant and unnecessary - and yet (s)he will *still* go on making these edits, seldom giving summaries for them (and almost never giving *proper* summaries), and all the time hopping between IP addresses in several ranges (103.101.168.xx, 103.101.171.xx, etc.) instead of availing of the benefits of creating a proper account.

Whether it's out of inability or refusal to see the errors of his/her ways and to learn from them, or just unbelievable carelessness, I don't know. But it disappoints me greatly - as has every other situation I've come across in my nearly ten years on Wikipedia in which a person has persisted in making unnecessary edits (vandalism, addition of trivia/redundant info, etc.), not making proper use of the edit summary box, and hopping between IPs - even after being punished for it in some way.

And it disappoints me, too, that as long as Wikipedia continues to exist these people will *always* be around - just as there will always be people on Facebook and Twitter frequently making unacceptably silly posts/tweets for no good reason and with no need to. (Probably not the fairest comparison in the world, but you get what I mean.)

This isn't the only reason why I have decided to retire from editing Wikipedia - but it's the main one. Along with other things, it *has* affected my enjoyment of editing to the point where I no longer enjoy it as much as I should. By no means has this been an easy decision to make, especially after so many years of editing - but it *is* a good thing to know when to stop, and it *is* a good time to stop when the fun stops.

I *will* take my leave with *some* good memories of it all, though.
