The 1958–59 season was the 35th season in the existence of AEK Athens Football Club. They competed in the Athens Football Clubs Association League, the Panhellenic Championship and the Greek Cup. The season began on 7 September 1958 and finished on 21 June 1959.

Overview

edit

That was the last season of participation for AEK Athens, as well as the other major clubs of Athens at the AFCA League, as the First National Division was to be established from the following season. With Kostas Negrepontis at the wheel, AEK finished in third place behind Panathinaikos and Panionios, respectivelly and thus they were all qualified to the Panhellenic Championship. Furthermore, those three clubs, alongside Apollon Athens, who finished fourth in the standings, were qualified to participate in the next season's First Division.

In the last Panhellenic Championship, the teams that participated were decreased from 10 to 12 compared to the previous year. AEK fought for the title until the end against Olympiacos. The title would eventually be decided at the last matchday in a match deemed final between the two contenders at Karaiskakis Stadium, where the yellow-blacks seeked only victory. AEK managed to squeeze Olympiacos, after taking a 0–2 lead in the first ten minutes with the goals of Polyzos and Nestoridis. However, the club from Piraeus equalized the score by the 71st minute with the goals of Yfantis and Papazoglou. AEK had no other choice but to chase the third goal and in the 85th minute Stamatiadis sent the ball into the opponent's net, but the referee disallowed the goal.[1] As a result AEK did not manage to break the six-year streak of Olympiacos and finished second, just 2 points from the top.[2][3]

In the cup, AEK after defeating Panargiakos with 1–4 at the extra time for the round of 32, came across Panathinaikos. The match took place in Nea Filadelfeia on April 26, but was suspended by the referee at the 53rd minute and while the score was 0–0, due to a broken bottle thrown towards him. The HFF decided its repeat on a neutral ground, at the Karaiskakis Stadium on May 13, where AEK won with a goal by Kanakis.[4] For the semi-finals, AEK were drawn against Olympiacos, again at the AEK Stadium, where the qualification was again decided at the Karaiskakis Stadium, since the match resulted in a 2–2 draw and the after extra time was played, the rematch was set in Piraeus. AEK were losing by 3–0 with the only thing they managed to do was to reduce the score to 3–1 with a goal by Kanakis at the end of the match and thus they were left out of the institution.[5]

Top scorer of the club and of the championship was Kostas Nestoridis with 21 goals, proving that he had become the star player not only within the team, but also within the country. The last season of the Panhellenic Championship was to be the last season of the great Negrepontis as the coach of AEK Athens, after 4 terms at the team's bench and numerous years of contribution to the club.[6]

Fakis continued, while the medical staff of AEK left someone next to him in the posts to put ice on his head. At the 63rd minute, Fakis collected the ball, but as he was still dizzy, gave it to the hands of Vernezis and thus the referee whistled a penalty. Immediately it was understood that Fakis was unable to continue and because there were no substitutions then, Vernezis took his place under the posts.
