Conflict of interest

edit

Hello, Atlamecho. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Be cautious about deletion discussions. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources in deletion discussions, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 08:39, 19 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • I'm posting this because you mentioned here that you were authorized by Tomarkin to write a page about him. (By the way, I was unable to find any previously deleted articles about him on Wikipedia.) Please understand that this poses a conflict of interest and while we do somewhat discourage editing with a COI, that doesn't mean that you can't. It just means that you have to be especially careful about how you edit, as you will be expected to follow guidelines very closely. So far you did do the right thing by stating your COI, which is the only thing you are specifically required to do if you have been hired (for pay, experience, or other compensation) to create an article. I'd personally recommend that you go through WP:AfC, our articles for creation process. It will enable you to write an article in our AfC space before it is approved by an uninvolved editor. This means that you have more time to work on the article and will be given the chance to fix issues that would have otherwise meant that the article would be instantly deleted. The only times an AfC article will be deleted is if it is a copyright violation, unambiguously promotional, or has gone over 6 months without any edits.
On a side note, I would like to caution you about sourcing. One of the links you gave was to Tomarkin's personal Facebook page. We don't use Facebook as a reliable source in general and in any case, that would be considered a WP:PRIMARY source that cannot show notability. The same thing goes for this link, as it appears to be maintained by Tomarkin himself (or a representative). An example of a reliable source would be something along the lines of a news article written about Tomarkin, his artwork, or one of his shows. You can see more about this at WP:RS and if you have any big questions about sources, you can always ask around at Wikipedia:RS/N, which is a noticeboard for questions about reliable sources. You can also seek help by going through the WP:TEAHOUSE, which is a good place to start if you are a new editor or an experienced one looking for some help in general. • I found the article, but it is pretty much empty and is only comprised of the following: "Miro Tomarkin Artist currently living in London. Born 23rd of August 1963. Most recent works : meet the Chernobyl Family, or when people play with atoms...". It'd be best to just start afresh at AfC. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 08:49, 19 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
