Thanks...on wheels

edit

Hi, Antandrus. Thanks again for getting me out of a blue funk over Lutos?awski the other day. And I just want to express appreciation for the effort you're putting in to undo all this page-move vandalism; it can't be very enjoyable for you. The sooner the developers implement the edit-count bar to page moves the better; the biggest detriment to Wikipedia is that it's stopping you contributing to articles… --RobertGtalk 15:36, 19 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

I love you.

What's going on with the profane edit comments upon page moves? I've left an alert on WP:Vandalism, but it seems to be mostly out of your typical character as a normal and helpful contributor. -SocratesJedi | Talk 16:18, 22 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Presidio of Santa Barbara

edit

Nice work on the Presidio of Santa Barbara article. Since it's no longer missing and not even a stub, I've removed it from Wikipedia:WikiProject Southern California/Other Counties to do. You should think about recommending the article for Did you know. For example, you could suggest: Did you know...that the Presidio of Santa Barbara, built by the Spanish in 1782, is the second oldest building in the state of California? BlankVerse 08:22, 23 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome! The standard way to show appreciation on the Wikipedia seems to be to award Barnstars, but I've seen them sometimes given for what I consider inappropriate reasons. I'd much rather just add a personal note to a person's page. Then, if I think someone is one of the good guys, I'll remember them and do one of my very rare votes at Requests for adminship.
I've been getting very depressed watching Missing Wikipedians. One of the more interesting remarks on that page is the quote taken from the goodbye on User:GK's page. I probably should just take the page off my watchlist. :-(
Since you have some GIS experience, I have a question for you. I've been doing some genealogy, but sometimes it's a real pain trying to keep track of where people have moved. I don't need anything real fancy—just something that would show county boundaries, allow the inputing of city locations and names, usually strait lines (with arrows?) between the cities, and some simple annotation capability. I've looked at some of the free and commercial GIS software out there, but all the descriptions might as well be written in Arabic, because they make no sense to me. Do you know if any of the simple free GIS programs, such as fGIS, might work for what I'm talking about. BlankVerse 04:52, 24 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the info. I hadn't even thought about exploring the Wikipedia for info, but I found this free program TNTlite that looked like it might be sufficient. What's also interesting for me is that their website has a bunch of tutorials for download, although with my current dialup account, it'd take forever to scarf them all up. For the cities, I'd probably want at least two attributes: date of first know residence, and the head of household. Would most GIS software programs allow me to enter all the coordinates, city names, and attributes into an Excel spreadsheet, and then import that data into the GIS program? BlankVerse 09:52, 27 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your praise on my peer review and for creating the map, which I've copied to some other articles. I've submitted the article as a FAC and would appreciate your vote at Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates/Jean_Schmidt. PedanticallySpeaking 17:05, August 23, 2005 (UTC)

Observations

edit

If you live in the Gaviota area, I suppose you know a lot about Santa Barbara. Your contributions to Goleta (I live there) show that can add a lot of stuff to material about Santa Barbara county and these articles (about SB county) need a face lift, so I believe you can help me add and clean up "these" (those?) articles. Just telling you. --Member 18:55, 24 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi Antandrus! Thanks for your support on my recent RFA. I'm now an administrator, and I wanted to come by and thank you for your generous and kind words. Reading your "support for this good-natured and exceptional Wikipedian" simply made me feel wonderful. You're also one of the Wikipedians I have a lot of respect for too!

I have yet to start an article on the History of harmony or History of tonality, but perhaps we could do some sort of collaborative effort on these article? I hope it would be something you'd enjoy doing. If you ever need an extra hand with something on Wikipedia, please feel free to let me know, and I'll do my best to help out. Thanks again for your support - and I'll see you around Wikipedia! --HappyCamper 23:30, 24 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Image question

edit

Hi Carnildo! I've noticed you are knowledgeable about image licensing issues (and from your talk page I seem not to be the first one to have noticed!) Can I have your opinion please, on [1] ? The source states clearly that it is available for educational, non-commercial use; what do you think is the right license tag? Thanks much, Antandrus (talk) 19:52, 27 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Honestly? {{ifd}} or {{delete}}. Images with licenses that prohibit commercial use are no longer allowed on Wikipedia (see Jimbo's email of May 19 [2]), and it's probably not possible to claim fair use, since it should be possible for a Wikipedian to create a replacement photograph. --Carnildo 05:43, 28 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Grunion

edit

Thanks for the compliment for the Grunion article, but that was mostly me just siphoning stuff off the Cal Fish & Game website (which is in the public domain) and then doing a little copy-editing, plus adding a little info on the two Baja Calif. grunion species.

It's interesting that a few weeks before I worked on that article I had just figured out how to add articles to my watchlist that had not yet been created. Since I had been thinking about creating an article on grunion, I used that as my text article. Then about a week after that I added another red-link to grunion in an article that I was editing. It was then I decided that the article had to be written and would be my very first brand-new Wikipedia article. I had already gathered all the material I needed from the F&G website and was doing my editing offline when I noticed on my watchlist that an anon had created a very stubby grunion article. Since I knew that I wanted to submit the grunion breeding info to Did you know, and there was a 36 hr. time limit for DYK, I quickly finished my offline editing and dumped everything in one big lump.

The article still needs some work, but much of the info that I want to add is not on the internet. I'll probably have to do a visit to my local state college library. I also want to add a range map, which I think should be pretty easy to do, but right now I only have a good description for the range of the California grunion species. I've also been trying to get some good photos for the article. BlankVerse 06:12, 29 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Re: New Venice (formerly New Orleans)

edit

Now why do you think it should be reverted? Can't you see how obvious the truth is? Global warming is only making hurricanes stronger every year so they'll have no choice but to build the city on stilts like Venice and Bangladesh, and rename it New Venice.

If you don't think so, then what will they do to prevent damage from a hurricane this strong next time??? I think the cost to restore the city is too great, wouldn't you say? Especially if it'll occur EVERY YEAR, as hurricanes get stronger & stronger (and they WILL). --129.130.38.232 03:00, 1 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

OK, I will WP:AGF and answer you seriously. There is a big difference between a city which is recovering from a disastrous flood, and one that has accepted waterways as a part of its transportation infrastructure for hundreds of years. Unless I missed it, I have heard no one propose that New Orleans accept the permanent presence of deep water in all its streets. History is full of examples of cities that have come back from disasters as bad, if not worse, than this one, and gone on to become centers of culture at least equal to their status before. Did Amsterdam in 1953 decide to accept being permanently underwater? How many large cities leveled in the Second World War decided just to give up, and never to rebuild? Have a look at the bigger picture here. People are more resilient than you may think. Antandrus (talk) 15:26, 1 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

So long as I'm making the rounds of all these connected talk pages—all these people on break is depressing! And you still here quietly polishing the early music section of the Wiki and defending against the invasion of crud.
