Language specific IPA Keys

It might save you some grief to understand that the IPA for X IPA keys are designed to help readers understand the language-specific IPA transcriptions found at Wikipedia and to help editors in being consistent across the same. They aren't a replacement or supplement for article content. If there aren't very many transcriptions, making such a page isn't really warranted. As there is no established need for a Lu Mien pronunciation key, I have merged the Template:IPA-lu mien into Help:IPA. As MOS:PRON indicates, a better first step would be to create the transcription template first and then use that to establish whether there are a sufficient number of transcriptions to warrant the key. @Aeusoes1 and Kwamikagami: We have a redirect from Lu Mien to Iu Mien language, and another one from Template:IPA-lu mien to Template:IPA-ium. I was however unable to find Lu Mien (in fact, any name containing Lu) among the numerous glottonyms mentioned by OLAC, ODIN and Ethnologue. ... which is something I might understand in the case of, say, French or Spanish, but English language names are always capitalised, and capital ⟨I⟩ doesn't look very much like ⟨L⟩. Love —LiliCharlie (talk) 11:47, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

You'd think so! But in URLs names are frequently lower-cased, so we get things like iumienbuddhalighttemple.org/lu-mien and www.tourismsayaboury.org/team-member/lumien, both of which have 'lu-mien' in the URL and 'Lu Mien' as a header. The first is even for a Iu Mien temple, so you'd think someone would've noticed by now!

But I don't see any point to Template:IPA-lu mien, though. The history might be moved to L and the I-spelling deleted. — kwami (talk) 12:18, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
