PNG Place infoboxes

edit

Hi Aliasd, I noticed you have created a infobox for PNG places. This is great and something that I have been meaning to do for a while. I have a few concerns about the look and naming of it though at the moment, and I don't want you to get too carried away adding it to every article until perhaps we can work out a few things. For a start the template should called something like Template:Infobox PNG Place to keep it short and stadardised with other infoboxes. Then as to the look itself perhaps we could emulate something like the Template:Infobox Australian Place (see it in action on Sydney or Melbourne), but instead have only three varients, City/Major Town/Provincial Capital eg Lae, Rabaul, Kokopo. Then suburb eg Boroko, Eriku. Then one for village eg Salamaua. What do you think. Answer on my talk page. Nomadtales 01:23, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually I have gone ahead and created the new Template:Infobox PNG Place based on the Australian Place template. I am yet to add it to any pages yet. Let me know what you reckon. Nomadtales 04:44, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
FYI there is a discussion about the updated template over at Template talk:Infobox PNG Place, it would be good to see your thoughts. Nomadtales 03:38, 11 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
ok posted there, it looks good, pity it wasnt incorporated with any pages Aliasd 04:57, 11 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Portal:Papua New Guinea

edit

The Oceania portal hasn't linked to the Papua New Guinea one because the latter is entirely unmaintained. I'd be happy to help in any way if you begin maintaining the PNG portal, but I'm not willing to become the maintainer of it myself. If you don't want to get involved with it, then I'll remove the link from Portal:Oceania again.-gadfium 20:30, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am willing to maintain the portal. Please give me a day or so to bring it up to date, didn't meant to step on anyones toes! :) Aliasd 04:52, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
That's great. Again, if you need help, feel free to ask me.-gadfium 06:40, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey mate, I hate to break it to you, but it looks like Image:Tabubil-from-the-air.jpg, has been uploaded with the wrong licence. If it is from pngbd.com copyright Gail Thomas, then unless you are Gail, you can't say you are the creator. You may want to remove it. Keep up the excellent work with the Nasa World Wind images tho. Nomadtales 06:07, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Possibly the wrong licence, but Gail said we can have it, do you know what tag I should use? Aliasd 06:09, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Use the {{attribution}} licence, and mention that Gail has given consent in the summary of the image. Nomadtales 06:34, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Fixed! Aliasd 07:21, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

World Wind

edit

Purari River Mouths

Thanks, btw for the compliments on the World Wind images, I couldn't use it before, but NASA made the Java SDK, and I have been using that to generate some GREAT ones! Aliasd 06:14, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I will have to see if it works for my mac. Have never just it before, just Google Earth. Do you think you could get an image for the Purari River. I am going to have a major cleanup of that next after the Sepik. Nomadtales 06:34, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Coordinates

Telefomin and the source of the Sepik.

From Telefomin to Tabubil. This image shows the sources of the Ok Tedi River, The Fly River and the Sepik as well as the Star Mountains and the two major settlements in the area. Its amazing how close Telefomin is, yet how far away!

I will have an image for you soon, I am just waiting for the best resolution to load. Mouth coords are 7°49′16″S 145°00′22″E / 7.821°S 145.006°E / -7.821; 145.006, 7°50′24″S 145°02′28″E / 7.840°S 145.041°E / -7.840; 145.041 and 7°51′00″S 145°10′41″E / 7.850°S 145.178°E / -7.850; 145.178. Source is 6°23′46″S 144°15′00″E / 6.396°S 144.250°E / -6.396; 144.250 at 1240M. Aliasd 06:44, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

any chance you can get the source details and elevation of the other rivers, especially the Sepik. Nomadtales 07:09, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Any co-ordinates you want, I will do Sepik first, but any ones you want, just post them here. Aliasd 08:18, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
sepik mouth: 3°50′24″S 144°32′13″E / 3.840°S 144.537°E / -3.840; 144.537 source: 5°09′50″S 141°38′53″E / 5.164°S 141.648°E / -5.164; 141.648 Elevation: 1337 M (serious) Aliasd 08:49, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
sorry, the Sepik continues along, where I thought was a road (bleh) source: 5°13′08″S 141°49′16″E / 5.219°S 141.821°E / -5.219; 141.821 2167M, but mabye Im wrong, and this is a tributary, I cant google hardcore atm, cause my intertubes is sluggish to say the least Aliasd 08:55, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
good stuff. It will have to do. It will be very hard to get an accurate coordinate. Nomadtales 09:32, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Template

edit

What do you think of a Rivers of Papua New Guinea Template? or mabye we could do up templates for the Fly system, Sepik System, Gulf System.. etc, looking forward already to doing basin maps/images for the main article! Aliasd 06:56, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

go for it. it can just be a varient of the current rivers template we have incorporated. the only problem with the map is that unlike a city/town you can't use a yellow dot to denote where it is. Nomadtales 07:09, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ahh, I was thinking more like the Provincial capitals template, with a list.... but I wouldnt mind redesigning the map, mabye I can do something tricky with the image too... (trails off) Aliasd 07:14, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ah OK, was thinking you wanted to redevelop the big one. But no I get yah. Yup its a good idea, why not PNG rivers over 100km long? Nomadtales 09:38, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
