File:Trinity Lutheran Church - Stephens City.JPG

I was waiting until the weekend (this one in fact) to go out and take some updated pictures of the church. You beat me to it and did a MUCH better job than I ever could. Well done! :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:48, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks! Great work on the Stephens City article, btw. I've been uploading photos of Stephens City and Middletown if you need additional pix. APK whisper in my ear 01:55, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
Very cool! I had been meaning to get some pictures of the older historic houses in town. You wouldn't, by any chance, have a photo of the new "Newtown-Stephensburgh Historic District" sign they put up in town a couple weeks ago, would you? Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk • 17:19, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
Speaking of those older houses, here's an interesting Winchester Star article from this past week about this property. I only have a photo of this sign. Where is the Newtown-Stephensburgh Historic District sign? I can swing by and take a photo. APK whisper in my ear 17:37, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
The town did a lot of work on that house and one a few doors down from it a few years ago. They were renovated back to the way they originally looked way back when. As for the sign, I think one is midway down Main Street. Essentially, there are four of them, and they border the Historic District on all sides. - NeutralhomerTalk • 17:50, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
I looked for the sign, but unfortunately it's hiding from me. I'll look again sometime this week. APK whisper in my ear 21:27, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
I've seen it on Main Street/US 11 going south. I have only seen it twice, both at night, so I didn't get a chance to see which side-street it is near. - NeutralhomerTalk • 23:52, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
Is this the new sign? APK whisper in my ear 18:29, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
Yup, that'd be it. :) You made our soggy day here look pretty good in the picture. Thanks! - NeutralhomerTalk • 19:36, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

Abraham Lincoln

Thanks for expanding this article a bit! Should be a fairly easy one to promote to GA status at some point. I am working on a couple other sculpture articles at the moment, but perhaps I can circle around and help expand in the future. Keep up the great work! ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:29, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks! I plan on working on the article this evening. APK whisper in my ear 22:55, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
Looks great! If you think the article having four images is overkill, feel free to remove one. Personally, I like the visuals and seeing the statue's phases. Looks like you may have just added another GA to the project. :) ---Another Believer (Talk) 04:54, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. I removed one. Hope that's ok. :-) I uploaded additional photos to its Commons category including this one. Do you prefer that one over the current infobox photo? I really like the sky background and how it's a closer view, but the base is visible in the current one not to mention the building is a nice background IMHO. APK whisper in my ear 05:16, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
I created a chronological gallery. I've never tried that before, so if it's not kosher or you think it looks odd, feel free to revert. APK whisper in my ear 06:04, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
The gallery is a bit odd to me. I rescattered the images, moving the closeup with the blue background to the design section (this is a great picture, but I think the one with the pedestal is better for the infobox). I am not sure how the infobox formatting got messed up, though. :( When I look at the diffs of my edits, they don't impact the infobox directly. ---Another Believer (Talk) 11:31, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Just noticed

that you are back. Welcome back. You might not know me but I know your DC NRHP pix very well. Smallbones(smalltalk) 03:14, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks! It was definitely fun to photograph NRHPs when I lived in D.C. I noticed others have taken photos of the city's NRHPs that I missed and ones that were listed after I stopped editing in 2010. It's nice to see all of the D.C. listings have photos. APK whisper in my ear 03:46, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

Family Drive-In Theatre

Nice work! I had been meaning to start an article about the Drive-In, but never got around to it. Since you did, here are the articles I found about the Drive-In. Hopefully there is something in here you can use.

These were the ones I found that featured the Drive-In in one way or another. I thought it was neat that the Czech station came to Stephens City. Apparently, they have a DC bureau, so they sent that guy out. :) Anywho, hope these will help build a better article. Again, great work! Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk • 09:30, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the additional refs. I've never been to that theater, but my better half has many times. (he grew up in Middletown) I'll go one of these days! APK whisper in my ear 21:05, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Believe it or not, it's still open. Typically they try to keep the Drive-In open until December 1, depending on the weather. So you still have time to catch a movie.
Give their website a look-see for what's showing. Typically Screen 1 is family movies and Screen 2 are the PG13 and R rated films, like horror movies, thrillers, and dramas. They always have a double feature, sometimes (depending on time) they might have a triple. - NeutralhomerTalk • 21:36, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
I forgot to mention, congrats on the coverage in Northern Virginia Daily! APK whisper in my ear 22:40, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, much appreciated! :) Mom and Dad bought 5 copies of the paper. I am going to take one to Michaels in Winchester and have it professionally cut out, matted and framed. It was a neat experience to say the least, especially since I was front page above the fold. I thought I would be in B section and was OK with that. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 23:55, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
I thought the same thing would happen when this article came out about User:Epicadam's work on Washington, D.C. (I was quoted) It ended up being the big front page story, which was a nice surprise. Glad to hear you're going to frame it. That'll be a cool thing to show friends and family. APK whisper in my ear 00:04, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
Very cool! Good to see the Post doing a story about the DC article. Being front page on the cover of the Post (and it not be bad news) is a pretty big honor. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:57, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

Nice image update with this one. I took the others on a really hot day in July back in 2007. My camera was starting to fog up from the humidity when I took those, hence the slight blurry-ness. I didn't know cameras could fog up from the humidity, so rookie mistake there. :) Anywho, nice work! - NeutralhomerTalk • 23:38, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks! Random side note: today I noticed one of the buildings I photographed two weeks ago is no longer there. It must have been really bad if the town allowed a contributing property to be demolished. APK whisper in my ear 23:56, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, it was looking pretty rough. I think the previous owners tried to fix it up, but it never went anywhere. Knowing the town though, they will probably hand it over to the Newtown History Center. They, in turn, will rebuild it from scratch with the same materials and have it looking exactly as it was when it was built. They have done that with a few properties that were still standing. This will, probably, be the first where they have to start from scratch. - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:36, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

DYK reviews

Hi, your recent reviews for Template:Did you know nominations/Alicia Munnell, Template:Did you know nominations/Big Girls Don't Cry (book), Template:Did you know nominations/Harry K. Newburn, and Template:Did you know nominations/Ust'-Ishim man did not cover all the DYK criteria, and have been tagged. Yoninah (talk) 15:52, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello. I'm not sure what else is needed. My statement on each review was short and sweet, but it translates into "this is good to go." If there's additional text needed, I guess someone else will have to do it.
P.S. Tim, you were right. :-) APK whisper in my ear 18:29, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
The basic criteria are: Long enough, new enough, adequately referenced, no close paraphrasing seen, hook ref verified (or AGF for offline or foreign-language sources), hook ref cited inline, at least one cite per paragraph, QPQ done, image is public domain. It's nice of you to help clear the backlog, but it's a waste of your time if someone else is going to have to come in now and flesh out your reviews. BTW I agree with everything Tim1965 told you. Many reviewers have bowed out and the backlog is horrendous. DYK used to be a lot more fun to work on; with the new rules, it takes me as much time to review 1 article as it used to take to review 4. But I'm a rules-oriented type of person, so I enjoy it whenever I have some time. Best, Yoninah (talk) 18:54, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. I was fairly active with DYK before my long Wikibreak, but I'll probably just avoid it altogether now. (minus the two articles I've already nominated) It seems to be more trouble than it's worth, which is a shame since prolific writers like Tim and others feel the same. APK whisper in my ear 22:39, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
I'm unhappy to be correct about DYK. - Tim1965 (talk) 17:30, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
I was formerly a frequent DYK contributor, but this is precisely the reason I've not sent anything there since last year. Nyttend (talk) 13:26, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
That's a shame. Of the two articles I nominated a few weeks ago, one hasn't even been reviewed. The other nomination took a bit of Wiki-hounding on my part to conclude, but should be on the Main Page sometime soon. That'll be it for me though. APK whisper in my ear 20:15, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

Image Request

Hey, next time you are in Stephens City, could you get a shot of the town offices? I did with this picture, but it isn't the best. The three large trees and the clouds that were rolling in didn't make for a good shot. I took 12 photos and that one was the best. You don't have to make a special trip, just whenever you make it through the area next. Thanks!...NeutralhomerTalk • 05:04, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

I actually tried taking a shot of it today, but unfortunately, the sun and clouds were not cooperating. I'll try again soon. APK whisper in my ear 05:13, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, we had a bit of a cloudy day here. Just checked the forecast, Saturday is supposed to be the better of the two days this coming weekend. No rush though. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 05:46, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
Which cemetery is this? I've photographed four of them. Is there one I'm missing? APK whisper in my ear 05:54, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
It doesn't have an actual name, I don't think any of the Civil War cemeteries do. But it is located at Mulberry and Green Streets behind the Sheetz. Here is a link to a Google Map of the cemetery. You can also see it on Google StreetView.
As for the others, there is a large Civil War cemetery, though I think some of the original settlers are buried there too, on Grove Street between Locust and Martin Streets. There is a small one in behind the Methodist Church, that one can be found on Germain Street, between Locust and Filbert. That one has many of the original settlers, I do believe. There is another behind the Exxon, accessible from Mulberry Street (take a right at the Lutheran Church, it's on the right). The public cemetery, Green Hill, is located on Fairfax Street, between Germain and Grove. There might be folks from the Civil War or some settlers there as well, but I'm not sure. - NeutralhomerTalk • 06:19, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
I just noticed that you have uploaded a slew of pictures for the cemeteries and the Civil War ones actually do have names. Shows how much I pay attention. :D - NeutralhomerTalk • 06:48, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
I am looking through the other pictures you have taken. Great work! On the churches, there are one you might have missed. It's the Lighthouse Full Gospel Church located at 5263 Main Street, between Filbert and Locust Streets. It's kinda small and offset from the street, so it makes it tough to see, easy to miss. Also, it doesn't help the churches van is typically parked right in front of the church. The one you have marked as just "5488 Main Street" is the Deliverance Ministries Pentecostal Community Church.
A quick note, on the lime kiln/quarry, if you would have gone slightly passed where you had taken pictures (along the tracks), you would have seen the quarry itself. Here's a Google Maps link to show you what I mean. That and two other locations are where Stephens City gets it's water. - NeutralhomerTalk • 07:09, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
Here's a crappy photo of Lighthouse Full Gospel Church I took yesterday. 5488 Main Street seems to have had several names throughout the years. In addition to the name you mentioned, there's Grace & Mercy Ministries (according to their sign), Glorious Church of God in Christ (according to the NRHP nomination form, and St. John's Baptist Church (according to pg. 80). I'll have to check out the quarry at some point. I was with two other people and didn't want them to wait much longer. (they were already patient enough so I could crawl in here) It looks as though this is the only cemetery I've missed. APK whisper in my ear 22:29, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
Actually it looks really good. Unfortunately, Lighthouse is a smaller church, so the outside needs some TLC, so that's the best you will probably get. A quick note, Lighthouse is located at 5263 Main Street. Deliverance Ministries Pentecostal Community Church was previously located at 5488 Main Street, across from the Old Stephens City School (at Main and School Streets). You are correct, that is indeed now Grace & Mercy Ministries.
As for the quarry, you can take the road (marked with the "A") and it goes directly to the quarry. That way you don't get in trouble with CSX for being on the railroad tracks. The road marked is also the road for Valley Redi-Mix, so you might want to check with the plant before going down. I doubt they will mind though since you won't be in their way.
I'm glad you were able to get a couple shots of 5493 Main Street. I think that's the oldest and the coolest house in town. I call it the "wooden house" because it's all wood, it definitely stands out. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 23:52, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, 5493 has a lot of character. It looks older than it is (according to the NRHP nomination form). There's quite a few buildings dating from the late 1700s, but the oldest I've come across so far is the Stone House. You mentioned the school. It would be nice if something was done with it, even if that means converting it to residential use (like Middletown's old school). APK whisper in my ear 00:04, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

There have been many ideas floated around about the school. From using it for residential housing, to moving the town offices there, to using it for community events, the list goes on and on. Money for repairs keeps getting in the way. They repair a little, wait for money to come in, repair a little and so on. They are putting up the Veterans Memorial in front of the school, which is supposed to be done by Veterans Day. I haven't heard whether or not it is still on schedule, though.

When I got my picture taken a few days ago, I noticed they had did some demo work on the back of the Stone House. I believe it was a kitchen (probably modern and added on), so they were probably taking that part off the building to renovate it. The building is owned by the town, so that appears to be the next renovation project. They will work on it for months to bring it back to the way it looked many, many years ago. Even refurbishing the woodwork and stonework, not to mention the tinwork on the roof. - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:35, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

I checked the Newtown History Center (which is two doors up from the Stone House, on the corner of 11 and 277) and they are indeed doing the renovation to the Stone House. A couple of blog enteries confirm my suspicions that the kitchen was modern...well as modern as the 19th century allows. :) So, that is, indeed, their next project. I love that Stephens City renovates and refurbishes the old houses in town, to how they were many years ago. Instead of doing what other towns do and just knocking them all down. - NeutralhomerTalk • 00:43, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, I like that as well. I've uploaded new shots of the Widdows-Frazier house in case you want to use one. If you're happy with the current one in the article, no worries. Side note: I've uploaded around 140 photos of Stephens City so far. My plan is to photograph all of the historic district's contributing buildings. APK whisper in my ear 05:16, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
I switched the Widdows-Frazier House shot for one of the Stone House. I really like it since it is the oldest building in town. Plus, with it being under renovation, it will change over the next year or so, making it an interesting building to photograph.
If you are looking for an article to work on after all the pictures are taken, there is an article for the Newtown-Stephensburg Historic District. I have had it on my to-do list for awhile. I wanted to photograph all the buildings in the district (which you are doing) and do a massive article on the whole district, house by house. It's something I have been wanting to do since 2009. Though I would probably scale it down a little. :) If that is something you'd like to do, let me know. - NeutralhomerTalk • 05:54, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
I think using the Stone House photo is a good idea since, like you said, it's the oldest building in town. I'll work on the Newtown-Stephensburg Historic District article soon. There's a checklist of articles I plan on writing or expanding, and that's one of them. :-) APK whisper in my ear 22:11, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
I really like that shot, plus we can always use the Widdows-Frazier House picture in the Newtown-Stephensburgh Historic District article. Whenever you want to begin on that article, please let me know. But no rush, it isn't going anywhere. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 01:58, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Courtesy Break

Hey APK, was just curious if you were able to get into town to get a couple more shots of buildings you might have missed, specifically the Town Offices. I plan on replacing the current photo with one you take. If not, no worries, the town's been here for 256 years, so it ain't going anywhere anytime soon, so no rush. :) Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk • 02:59, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

Not yet, but maybe this weekend (weather permitting, natch). I'm taking care of a sick patient (i.e. my partner either has the flu or ebola) right now, so I won't be out and about much the next few days. APK whisper in my ear 03:46, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
Hopefully it isn't that stomach bug that went through here about 3 weeks ago. I would have perfered Ebola to that, ugh! The flu is starting to pick up across the eastern seaboard, so unfortunately, it is probably that. Hope he feels better soon. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 03:55, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
@Neutralhomer: I finally got a shot of the Town Office. Unfortunately, the sun seems to always be facing me when I go by to take a photo, so it's not a good shot.  :-/ APK whisper in my ear 20:56, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
I actually like it. The light, plus the shadow of the trees, definitely brings out the detail of the building making it easier to see. Good picture! :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 21:51, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! I took a few more photos at the Old Town Cemetery while looking for Peter Stephens' grave. I didn't see his; just other Stephens family graves. (here's a list of some of the graves at the cemetery) When you wrote his article, did you comes across any info on where he's buried? APK whisper in my ear 22:20, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
Unfortunately, no, I'm not certain where the original Stephens family, headed by Peter Stephens is buried. I can, though, ask the gentleman in charge of the Newtown History Center if he knows. If anyone would know, it would be him. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:39, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
Here's the answer I got back from the Director and Curator of the Newtown History Center:
The early members of the Stephens family (including Peter Sr. and Lewis Sr.) are probably buried in the oldest cemetery in town. That is the graveyard at the southeastern corner of Mulberry and Green Streets. There are surviving headstones there over the graves of some of the descendants of Peter Stephens but there are no surviving markers over the graves of Peter Sr. and Lewis Sr.
In her book Early Days and Methodism in Stephens City, Virginia, Inez Virginia Steele wrote the following in 1906: "The dust of the first settlers rests in this graveyard, but, being generally marked by common limestone rocks, their graves are not distinguishable."
Sorry if this makes this less interesting for photographs but this is all we know.
I had mentioned you were taking photos of the town and he was really impressed about the new ones he has seen. So, you probably walked right past the graves of the Stephens (so did I) and didn't know about it. :S Wish I could have been more of a help on this one. - NeutralhomerTalk • 19:11, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the info! APK whisper in my ear 00:40, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
