question re article boxes edit

Hi. what does one call the box which appears on the right hand at the top of the page, in the following article on the Battle_of_Malaya, containing information on PAcific theater WW2 battles? Is that a template? or a portal? Also how does one add items to this box? does one simply type in a certain text tag... what would that be? also, how does one edit the box itself (whatever it's called)? It's called an infobox. You can find a list of them here, and WP:IBT has a how-to guide. You may also want to copy one from an article into a sandbox and play around with the different terms to figure out how it works. Question re subcategories edit

According to Wikipedia help, one creates a subcategory by putting the tag for a category on the page of that subcategory, as described in subcategory help.

However, i have visited a few subcategory pages. Some of the do fucntion this way. However there is one which apparently does not; Category:Modern_aircraft_carriers_of_the_United_States, . When i click on "Edit this page", the name of the category does not seem to appear anywhere on the page. So now I am unclear as to how subcategories are actuallky created. Could you please help? I appreciate it.

Here are the categories which I visited: Category:Modern_aircraft_carriers_of_the_United_States, a subcategory of Category:Aircraft_carriers_of_the_United_States. Another subcategory in the same category is

Sm8900, the reason that you can't see categories on Category:Modern aircraft carriers of the United States is that its categories are added by templates. When you edit Modern aircraft carriers of the United States you can see the following code:

That means the category is using Template:cathead modern aircraft carriers of the. It gives the template the country's name as an input. Here is what you see when you edit the template:

The template puts all of those things onto the category page automatically and substitutes the input ("United States") for each "{{{1}}}". You can see that it gives a brief description of the category and places it into three parent categories.

The effect of the <includeonly> and </includeonly> is to make sure that only pages that use the template receive those categories; they make it so that the template itself isn't actually categorized. TomTheHand 21:40, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

We try to categorize ship class articles according to a consistent plan, so if you'd like to consistently add an additional category to class articles it's a change that should be discussed in the community. There isn't a group for trusted users, because all users are assumed to be acting in good faith until proven otherwise. As for a chat/gathering place, you can check out Esperanza's coffee lounge. However, some users frown on chatting excessively--Wikipedia is not a messageboard, after all. A few friendly comments shouldn't bother anyone, but your primary focus in being here should be in editing the encyclopedia, not socializing with other users. You posted the same question on the Admin noticeboard; please don't cross-post (although this is actually a better place for your questions). First, if you consistently edit constructively and interact well with other editors, you will eventually join the WP group of trusted users. :-) If you want to be a trusted user with extra work, you'll have to become an Administrator, which has certain loose requirements that I don't have links to offhand. When i try to edit a page, why do i sometimes get a message from my browser, asking me if I want to download a file called "index.php"? What is this for? Should I save it, or what should I do? And should I be worried about this? Anyone else have the same problem?

What browser are you using? I've never gotten that. You probably don't need to, and I bet it just happens when opening a new page? I think just don't save, and edit the new page. I think. This comes up surprisingly often -- what I'm told is that you need to go into Special:Preferences and make sure that "Use external editor by default" is unchecked. Your browser is attempting to download the page so that you can edit it in an outside program, if that makes sense. Naval heraldry edit

License tagging for Image:Bridge gif.jpg edit

Categories on templates edit

It's generally a very bad idea to add categories directly to templates (as you did for {{Campaignbox Pacific War}}), since there's no limitation on what articles the template may appear on. Depending on the circumstances, the category may or may not make sense for them; it should therefore be added to articles directly (as appropriate!), rather than being included through a template. Yes, that's what happens when a category is added like that. If you want to categorize only the template itself, you should use a noinclude tag around the category, like this:

<noinclude>[[Category:World War II Pacific Theatre]]</noinclude>

Heraldry by Country edit

Hi, I noticed you added List of coats of arms of the United Kingdom and dependencies to Category:Heraldry by country, and also to the heraldry by country template. There seems to be a bit of confusion. This category is supposed to be for articles about how the use of heraldry differs from country to country (i.e. for a given country, who can use coats of arms, how they are regulated, distinctive features of coats of arms of that country etc). It isn't supposed to be for articles about coats of arms of different countries. Those can be categorised under Category:Coats of arms by nation. The list of coats of arms of the UK... article was already in Category:British coats of arms which is a subcategory of Category:Coats of arms by nation.
