Economy

edit

Bartel's Clothing and Shoes, founded in 1922 as a family business, originally sold suits and formalwear for men, including tuxedos to graduating students, for several decades before incorporating shoes and women's clothing. It remained in the downtown district and locally owned without interruption since its beginnings. The store was permanently closed in 2023 due to shifting shopping habits and inventory difficulties.[1][2]

Murals

edit

Chehalis is home to several murals,[5] many sponsored by the city or community organizations, some of which partner with the Washington State Main Street Program.[6] In the downtown district, a large painting of a steam train, titled #15 at Sunset, is located on the Elks Building. In an alley on the north side of Market Street are a variety of wall paintings focusing on the eclectic, such as aliens and Bigfoot.[7][8]

A large welcome mural, focusing on the founder of the the city, Elizabeth Barrett Tynan Saunders, as well as the history of airplanes, is located at the north end of downtown. It has a small nod to the city's connection to the Kenneth Arnold sightings in 1947.[7][9] Three murals decorate the adjoining pubic bathroom facilities, each containing specifics about the city's railroads and community togetherness, including another UFO themed artwork, the Kenneth Arnold.[7][10] A mural of a butterfly flying over flowers, known as Garden Delight, is situated at the main crossing of Market and Boistfort and was completed in 2020. The mural, Lifting Up Chehalis, meant to inspire visitors to photograph themselves for social media, is installed on Boistfort Avenue, the location of the city's farmers market.[11]

Outside of downtown, a wall painting, Lewis County’s Legacy in Agriculture, details crops and farming was completed in 2022 at the United Natural Foods plant.[12] The Chehalis-Centralia Airport is home to a collage mural, Chehalis Celebrates Aviation, that highlights airplane history in the city.[11]

Sculptures

edit

Located at the Lewis County Law and Justice Center is a bronze statue known as The Guardian. Created to honor local police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, the artwork depicts a little girl along with an officer and a police dog.[13] Additional sculptures are found throughout the city, including 4 statues at the Recreation Park Complex portraying young children in various states of play.
