XLnotes is an add-in for Microsoft Excel, which allows to make comments for the cells, which contain Word documents, web pages and attachments.

Overview

edit

With XLnotes users can save notes containing documents, pictures, web pages and attachmets in their Excel workbooks. This allows to use Excel as a two-pane outliner, but unlike a tree-structure for notes, common for outliners, Excel has a free form grid. This allows to arrange notes in arbitrary structure or add notes to existing data. Notes are shown in a separate pane inside Excel, text notes use embedded Microsoft Word and web pages can be seen and saved using embedded Internet Explorer.

Features

edit

XLnotes expands Excel by adding following features[1]:

  • Integration - XLnotes add-in runs inside Microsoft Excel and offers additional functionality by expanding its commenting function.
  • Note types - XLnotes can create notes of 3 types: text notes, which contain Microsoft Word documents, web pages and attachments.
  • Note creation - Notes are shown with regular comments indicators (red triangle at the upper right corner of the cell) and appear when the corresponding cell is active.
  • Search - Searches for a given phrase in text notes.
  • Import and Export - Text notes can be imported or exported to cells or comments. Multiple text notes can be batch exported to Word, forming a single document.

File formats

edit

All notes are stored locally in their workbook. Workbook and notes are device and system independent and can be transferred and shared.

  • Import- Notes can be imported from cells contents and comments.
  • Export- Notes can be exported to Word documents and cell comments.

Interface

edit

XLnotes adds a new tab to the ribbon (for Excel 2007 and higher) or to the menu (for Excel 2003). It also adds new commands to a context menu.

License

edit
  • Free and Pro versions available. Free version has a limitation of a maximum of 15 notes per workbook. Free version is not time constrained.
